(review in english
below)
Iolanta é uma
ópera em um acto de P.I.

ANNA
NETREBKO, IOLANTA, Liceu Barcelona, January 2013
Iolanta is an opera in one act by PI Tchaikovsky that tells the story of a blind princess, Iolanta, whom everyone hides the existence of vision to avoid the heartbreak of the revelation. A oorish physician, Ibn-Hakia says can healher but only if she becomes aware of her condition. Her father, King René, opposes. A Count, Vaudémont, falls in love with her, realizes that she is blind and tells that to her, to the despair of her father. The treatment proposed by the doctor results and Iolanta begins to see, to everyone's satisfaction.
Although the performance at the Liceu has been in concert version, it was extraordinary and one of those that I will not forget for a long time. The reason? Anna Netrebko!

Liceu
offered us a performance with the Orchestra
and Chorus (reduced) of the Mariinsky Theatre of St. Petersburg,
under the direction of renowned Russian conductor Valery Gergiev, with a cast entirely Russian. The conductor was
excellent, the Choir and Orchestra as well, although a couple of minor mistakes
in the metals.
Anna Netrebko sang and wondered in the role of Iolanta. I already expressed here often my great admiration for this artist. I think she sings better and better, having already achieved excellence for years. Once again she was fabulous! The voice is magnificent in all its great length, bright, expressive, refined and always in control. And the top register is out of this world! She filled this great theater and all who attended this unforgettable performance. Even in concert version, she acted very well as the blind princess. It was a rare privilege to be able to watch live this interpretation of Netrebko, perhaps the best running soprano in the world.

King René
was sung by bass Sergei Aleksashkin.
A fantastic powerful voice, with a remarkable low register, within the
traditional quality level of the Russian basses.
Tenor Sergei Skorokhodov sung count Vaudémont. He was another very good singer, sometimes with a metallic timbre, but well audible throughout his vocal range.
In secondary roles, bass-baritone Edem Umerov (physician Ibn-Haki) and baritone Alexaner Gergalov (Robert) were singers with weak and uninteresting voices. Iolanta's friends Brigitta (Eleonora Vindau), Laura (Anna Kiknadze) and Marta (Natalia Yevstafieva) were very good.

A memorable
performance thanks to Netrebko, leading Liceu’s audience to delirium!
I and
several dozen other admirers waited about an hour for Netrebko at the stage
door. When she appeared, she ran out, surrounded by security guards, without
any autographs or photographs. A scene worthy of a thriller! Playing a papparazi-like for the
first time, this was these photos were the best I could get.
*****
Nesse caso a exaltação esfusiante contagia! Adoraria assistir um concerto desses! Além do mais a soprano é linda! Gostei do lance paparazzi...
Um grande abraço
Another terrific review! I am hoping to travel to Portugal this year, and I would enjoy meeting the contributors to this blog. Perhaps, we can take in an opera. I have enjoyed it tremendously over the last year.
ResponderEliminarDear JJ,
EliminarThanks for your kind comment. If you travel to Portugal you and your wife are invited for a tipical portuguese meal at least with one of the contributors to this blog - me (and my wife). But, please do tell me about the expected dates as soon as you plan them, as I travel a lot for professional reasons.
Regards
I definitely will as soon as we make firm plans. Also, if you are in the States, we might be able to dine here as well. Thank you!
EliminarA super nice week-end to my "opera fanatics"
