DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER / O NAVIO FANTASMA, Bayreuth, Agosto / August 2021

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8dtRIFVmDw

(Fotografia / Photo Enrico Nawarth)

DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER / THE GHOST SHIP, Bayreuth,  August 2021

I did not attend the performance of Wagner's opera “Der Fliegende Holländer” in Bayreuth. I was only able to see on youtube:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8dtRIFVmDw

For the first time, the musical direction was by a female conductor – Oksana Lyniv.

Once again Bayreuth presents a totally unconventional staging. Dmitri Tcherniakov conceived a scenario in which there are almost no references to the sea. At the opening, the mother of the Dutchman is the lover of Senta's father, she is rejected by society and ends up hanging herself.

All the action of the opera takes place on terraces or at a dinner table at Senta's house. The only successful aspect is an atmosphere of great tension that is always present throughout the opera. In the end, it's Senta's mother who kills the Dutchman. Once again, I didn't like the staging.

As for the singers, the quality was impressive.

The Holländer was interpreted in a superior way by John Lundgren, with a sinister posture throughout the recital

Georg Zeppenfeld was a correct Daland.

Eric Cutler was excellent as Erik, both in scenic performance and vocals.

Marina Prudenskaya's Mary did and Attilio Glaser's Steuermann did too.

I left Senta for last, interpreted by Asmik Grigorian. A colossus!! Despite not having heard her live, I think she was the best Senta interpretation in recent times. Very powerful voice, always in tune, full of nuances. And the scenic interpretation was fantastic! Bravo!! The audience in the theater also recognized her, giving her the highest ovation among all the participants.

SIEGFRIED, Royal Opera House, Outubro / October 2018

(review in English below)

SIEGFRIED, Royal Opera House, October 2018

The production of Keith Warner remains uninteresting. In the 1st act is a plane crashed in the Nibelheim but, despite the depth of the place, is almost whole, only the propeller is separated. It is in this scenario that all the action happens, namely the forging of swords.
In the second act the stage has a huge hole in the middle, the entrance of the cave of Fafner. However, he appears outside of it, including when he takes the form of a dragon. The bird is initially a toy but, when Siegfried understands it, it is the singer (Heather EngeBretsonwho descends suspended by some ropes.
In the 3rd act there is a large horizontal revolving wall, Wotan walking on it. The wall passes to vertical, as it happened in Valkyrie and it is with it that the action unfolds, finishing Brünhilde and Siegfried to throw themselves on an old mattress, that had served to collect the heroes dead in the previous opera.
This was the least interesting of the three operas of the Ring until now.

Maestro Antonio Pappano was, once again, brilliant, but the Orchestra was not perfect, with some failures in the metals.

Stefan Vinke (Siegfried) started less well, his voice is neither attractive nor beautiful and the emission irregular. But he was growing and in the 3rd act he was very well, contrary to what I expected.

The best of the night was Gerhard Siegel as Mime, fantastic either on vocal performance and on stage. He was the trickster and perfect opportunist dwarf.

John Lundgren (Wanderer, Wotan) repeated a great interpretation, as he had made in the previous opera.

Johannes Martin Kränzle’s Alberich also offered us again a performance of high level, as had happened in the Das Rheingold.

Brindley Sherratt (Fafner) and Wiebke Lehmkuhl (Erda), were at the top level in their small roles.

Nina Stemme's Brünhilde was remarkable, but the singer issued some more shouted notes than sung.

A VALQUÍRIA / DIE WALKÜRE, Royal Opera House, Londres / London, Outubro / October 2018

(review in English below)

As mesmas cadeiras e mesa vistos no Ouro do Reno.

Nesta noite a orquestra esteva assombrosa.

Foram elas: Alwyn Mellor (Gerhilde), Lise Davidsen (Ortlinde), Kai Rüütel (Waltraute), Claudia Huckle (Schwertleite), Maida Hundeling (Helmwige), Catherine Carby (Siegrune), Monika-Evelin Liiv (Grimgerde) e Emma Carrington (Rossweisse).

The production of Keith Warner is ugly and uninteresting. The stage has a metallic spiral structure in all its extension. In the middle a pile of books heaped together and a moat. Same chairs and table as seen on the Rhine. A vertical ladder to the left and a scattered red string (the string of destiny).
In the 1st act, in the centre of the stage, there is an elevated platform (a room) where Sieglinde is, but of little use. The second act has nothing relevant, everything happens without any scenic changes.
In the 3rd act there is a white rotating wall that occupies the whole of the stage. The ride of the valkyries is ugly and poor, made with horse skulls. The only interesting note is in the final scene of the fire, in which Wotan runs his hand through it and stays with a raised flame for some time in the hand.

This evening the orchestra was fabulous. Antonio Pappano masterful as conductor and the sound that was heard was magnificent, without any fault, great dramatic intensity and perfect pace!

Stuart Skelton's Siegmund was vocally superior. The singer has a beautiful timbre, big voice, always sang in tune and over the orchestra. The figure does not help on stage, but the main thing is the singing and this was blameless.

Emily Magee was the weakest link of the night as Seiglinde. She has a good figure but was below the desirable in the vocal interpretation. The voice is pleasant, but she was drowned by the orchestra when it sounded stronger and the contrast with Skelton was evident in the duets.

Bass Ain Anger was a perfect Hunding. Intense and beautiful cavernous voice, excellent figure and impeccable evil interpretation.

Bass baritone John Lundgren was an exceptional Wotan. In Das Rheingold he had left the idea that the vocal power was below the desirable, but he should be saving himself for this night in which he was remarkable and where he has his great interpretation in the Ring. He was always very audible and has a very beautiful voice. On stage was agile and very convincing.

Sarah Connolly returned to interpret Fricka at top level, consistent with what she had done in the previous opera.

The valkyries all very well, above what is usual to hear, and very homogeneous. By the way, until now, the homogeneity in the quality of singers has been one of the most positive aspects of this Ring. They were: Alwyn Mellor (Gerhilde), Lise Davidsen (Ortlinde), Kai Rüütel (Waltraute), Claudia Huckle (Schwertleite), Maida Hundeling (Helmwige), Catherine Carby (Siegrune), Monika-Evelin Liiv (Grimgerde) and Emma Carrington (Rossweisse).

And I leave to the end Nina Stemme’s Brünhilde. For me there is no better Wagnerian soprano at the present time. She never fails and sings always at the highest level. Again, it was so. She has a huge voice, a nice timbre and an impressive dramatic force. She was unsurpassed as Brünhilde and, to keep up this level, I imagine a thrilling Götterdämmerung.

It is always a rare privilege to watch a top Valkyrie.

A DAMA DE ESPADAS / THE QUEEN OF SPADES, Royal Opera House, Londres / London, Janeiro / January 2019

(review in English below)

THE QUEEN OF SPADES, Royal Opera House, London, January 2019

The opera The Queen of Spades by Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky with libretto by the brothers Modest I. Tchaikovsky and Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky was on scene at the Royal Opera House in London.

The young officer Gherman is obsessed by Liza, the bride of his friend Prince Yeletsky. The Countess, Liza's grandmother, knows a secret formula of 3 cards that guarantee success to the gambler. Gherman decides to discover the secret, to become rich and stay with Liza. When she sees him, she falls in love, and gives him the key to the Countess's room, through which he will have access to her room. They make a date at night. Gherman confronts the Countess in the bedroom, asking her the secret of the cards. She is scared to death when he points a gun at her. Liza arrives and is horrified by what she sees. Gherman is haunted by the Countess's ghost who reveals the secret of the three cards and orders him to marry Liza. However, his obsession with the cards leads Liza to suicide. At the game, Gherman has two big wins and is challenged by the Prince for a third game. He loses because the winning card is not the expected ace, but the Queen of Spades. Terrified at the Countess's vision, Gherman commits suicide.

The direction of Stefan Herheim (already presented at the Amsterdam Opera) is showy but very strange. The nice component is the classic, attractive room with a large crystal chandelier, where everything happens. The movement of the scenarios is effective and silent. And the dresses are very beautiful and rich.
But everything else is bizarre. At the beginning, a text referring to the impact of homosexuality on the composer's life appears. Tchaikovsky himself was always present, from beginning to end, as well as a piano where he composed or from where he tried to conduct the course of action. He is projected in Prince Yeletsky (it is the same singer who does both roles). The male choir represents his image replicated by many. Even the water contaminated with cholera who he drank to commit suicide appears in the hands of all his "clones" of the choir.
The opera begins with a sex scene with a male (incarnated by Gherman) and the rejection of a black angel of death, female (Liza). In the middle of the opera there is a lesbian scene between Liza and Paulina and, at the end of the 2nd act, when the choir sings in the audience, Catherine the Great appears ...as Gherman dressed as a drag queen!! Another example of a Eurotrash in a theater where it has not been common to see!

But everything was not bad. The musical direction of Antonio Pappano was great, as usual, and the orchestra was very good.

Gherman's lead role was played by Russian tenor Sergey Polyakov, replacing Antonenko. For me good news because I can not stand the nasal and harsh tone of the replaced. But Ployakov was not better, he had a bad technic, the voice was irregular and sometimes harsh.

Eva-Maria Westbroek was a discreet, unemotional Liza on stage, but vocally interesting and always well audible, though with difficulties in the top register.

The rest of the cast members were better. Bulgarian baritone Vladimir Stoyanov in the double role of Tchaikovsky and Prince Yeletsky sings little but his aria was beautiful and interpreted in a superior way. As Tchaikovsky brushed the ridiculous, but it was not his fault.

The Countess was also an interesting interpretation of Felicity Palmer, already septuagenarian but still singing and interpreting in style.

The best was John Lundgren as Count Tomsky. He has a beautiful voice with an impressive low register and a good stage presence.

Also worthy of note was the beautiful interpretation of Anna Goryachova as Paulina.

A very beautiful performance to the eyes but not interesting as the opera at the Royal Opera.
