O LAGO DOS CISNES / SWAN LAKE, Royal Opera House, Março /March 2020

(text in English below)

SWAN LAKE, Royal Opera House, March 2020

Among the classical ballets, Swan Lake by P I Tchaikovsky, with choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, is perhaps the best. The music is beautiful and, when the production is of a top category, as is the case with this one of the Royal Ballet, the show is of an overwhelming beauty.

Conductor Koen Kessels offered us a good direction of the Royal Opera House Orchestra.

The soloist dancers were absolutely exceptional.
Marianela Nuñez was Odete / Odile. Unsurpassed in gracefulness and dramatic interpretation, in addition to the technical component, for which I am an amateur and do not know how to appreciate details.

Prince Siegfried was Vadim Muntagirov, a very elegant, tall and thin Russian dancer, also performing impressively.

Benno was danced by Portuguese-Guinean dancer Marcelino Sambé, also at the highest level.

Villain Von Rothbart was Bennet Gartside, other less important characters, all were excellent.

The swans were always wonderful.

The Royal Ballet dancers are exceptional, this is the best ballet company in the world and each show it presents is excellent. When it is the Swan Lake, what you see on stage has a name - magic!

A BELA ADORMECIDA / THE SLEEPING BEAUTY, Royal Opera House, Novembro / November 2019

(review in English below)

THE SLEEPING BEAUTY, Royal Opera House, November 2019

Once again I watched the story of Princess Aurora who, after bumping into a spindle, falls into a deep sleep from the curse of the evil fairy Carabosse, but soon relieved by the good fairy Lilac. When awakened by the kiss of her enchanted prince Florimund, they marry and are happy for eternity.

The production of the Royal Ballet of London is magnificent. With Tchaikovsky's music and Marius Petita's choreography this ballet is always a feast for the senses. There were a lot of kids in the audience, excellent, and the show is perfect for them too. The Orchestra of the  Royal Opera House was conducted by maestro Simon Hewett.

It was beautifully danced, as usual at the Royal Ballet. The two main dancers, both Japanese, Akane Takada (Princess Aurora) and Ryoichi Hirano (Prince Florimundo) were fabulous. Also at the highest level were the other soloists Christina Arestis (Fairy Carabosse), Itziar Mendizabal (Fairy Lilac), Anna Rose O'Sullivan (Princess Florine) and Marcelino Sambé (Bluebird), the young Portuguese and Guinean recently hired as a soloist dancer at the Royal Ballet. In the end he received one of the largest ovations.

A great show.

Within the Golden Hour / Medusa/ Flight Pattern – The Royal Ballet, Londres / London, Maio / May 2019

(text in English below)

Dirigiu o maestro Jonathan Lo.

Within the Golden Hour / Medusa / Flight Pattern - The Royal Ballet, London, May 2019

I had the opportunity to see the general rehearsal of this magnificent production of The Royal Ballet in London. Immediately before the beginning a lady came to appeal to the "Friends" and "Patrons" (the only ones who could buy tickets) not to forget the Royal Opera House in their wills!

There were three ballets:
1- Within the Golden Hour, with choreography by Christopher Wheeldon, music by Ezzio Bosso and Antonio Vivaldi, costumes by Jasper Conran and lights by Peter Mumford. Maestro Jonathan Lo directed.
On an empty stage, many of the Royal Ballet's soloists danced a modern choreography of beautiful effect with the usual perfection on this stage.

2- Medusa, with choreography by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, music by Henry Purcell and Olga Wojciechowska, costumes by Olivia Pomp and lights by Adam Silverman. Maestro Andrew Griffiths directed.
A very beautiful choreography, in a sober scenario but with a beautiful effect. Several were soloist dancers some of the Royal Ballet's biggest stars, including Natalia Osipova (Medusa), Olivia Cowley (Athena), Ryoichi Hirano (Poseidon) and Matthew Ball (Perseus).
Soprano Natasha Page and the counter-tenor Tim Mead had excellent performances, especially him, who sang with a voice of unusual beauty.

3- Flight Pattern, with choreography by Crystal Pite, music by Henryk Górecki, costumes by Nancy Briant and lights by Tom Visser. Maestro Jonathan Lo directed.
Kristen McNally and Marcelino Sambé were two of the many soloists of this dark and sinister gray choreography with a magnificent stage where, in the end, the snowfall and the stage closing slowly was just one of many striking effects.

An excellent afternoon of modern ballet.
