WERTHER, Royal Opera House, Setembro / September 2019

(review in English below)

O tenor Juan Diego Flórez interpretou o protagonista.

WERTHER, Royal Opera House, September 2019

Jules Massenet's opera Werther was once again performed at London's Royal Opera House. At first the current director appeared to give bad news. But this time it was not the replacement of any singer, but the information that the subtitling system would not work due to the torrential rain that had fallen in London a few hours earlier.

The production of Benoit Jacquot already commented on this blog more than once is of an unparalleled beauty, perfectly suited to the various environments created in the opera. The exterior of the family home in the first act, the open space in the 2nd, the interior of Charlotte and Albert's house in the 3rd, and the room where Werther commits suicide and dies in the last with snow always falling, are magnificent.

The music is beautiful and the orchestra has done it justice, although conductor Edward Gardner frequently drowned out the singers.

Tenor Juan Diego Flórez played the protagonist. Readers of this blog know that he is one of my favorite singers and I have not spared him praise in the various performances where I saw him. But in this most dramatic register he is trying, things are different. On stage Werther was a great performer, no repair to make, but in the singing was not well, except in the top register, where he will feel more comfortable. He sang underpowered, sounded like he was in a rehearsal, was often drowned by the orchestra and could not convey emotion in the voice in various parts, contrary to what he did in the acting. It was a pity.

Mezzo Isabel Leonard was well as Charlotte. Fine-tuned, well-placed voice, somewhat restrained  correct interpretation but without emotion.

Baritone Jacques Imbrailo made a solid and convincing Albert, perhaps the best interpretation of the night.

The young soprano Heather Engebretson deserves a word of great appreciation. With a slight figure and great scenic agility, she was perfectly suited to Charlotte's younger sister Sophie. She sang well, her voice was fresh and well audible, especially in the mid and high register.

The other singers performed without dazzling. A performance that was worth especially for the music and the staging.

WERTHER, Viena, Staatsoper, Setembro / September 2018

 (review in English below)

WERTHER, Vienna, Staatsoper, September 2018

Massenet's opera Werther was on stage at the Vienna State Opera in a nice and rich production by Andrei Serban. In the center of the stage is a huge tree, with a raised platform and a few stairs and everything happens in this scenario, changing much the props that appear on the stage. The action was transported to the middle of the last century and everything is carefully chosen accordingly, clothes, furniture, different utensils. The tree starts with green leaves (Summer), then yellow and brown (Autumn) and finally no leaves. Very nice and well done.

Maestro Frédéric Chaslin did not do a good job because it looked like he was directing Wagner. Often he placed the excellent Vienna State Opera Orchestra in forte, often muffling the singers. Regrettable.

Russian tenor Dmitry Korchak was a very decent Werther, but not as emotive as it would be desirable. Nothing to say about his vocal amplitude and tuning, but he did not convey convincingly the passion for Charlotte. For anyone who has seen Jonas Kaufmann in this role, one will hardly see an interpreter who can match him, I think.

Charlotte was played by the experienced Sophie Koch who sings the role for many years (and it was she who sang in the production I mentioned with Kaufmann). Fantastic in both stage performance and vocal quality, with remarkable potency, beautiful timbre and emotion. Even with the maestro's effort to put the orchestra over the singers, he could not do it with her!

Baritone Clemens Unterreiner was an Albert of superior quality. Powerful voice, always in tune. The singer has a good figure, the staging helps a lot, and the performance on stage was exemplary.

Sophie was well interpreted by soprano Maria Nazarova, very agile, pleasant voice but here and there with a tendency for stridency. Everyone else was well and the kids were great with ease.

Unfortunately they did not open the curtain at the end and of the performance, and against the red curtain, the photographs come almost always very bad (and I was relatively close to the stage).

WERTHER, Royal Opera House, Londres / London, Junho /June 2016

(review in English below)

WERTHER, Royal Opera House, London, June 2016

Werther by Massenet, was on stage at the Royal Opera House, London in June 2016, a revival of the beautiful production of Benoît Jacquot. The action is dominated by the contrast between the passion of the protagonists and the repressive environment of the society of the eighteenth century, a conservative and effective staging. The scenarios by Charles Edwards are magnificent. The first act is by the entrance of the house of Charlotte, her father and brothers, and is dominated by a huge wall covered with ivy and with a fountain. The second takes place in a bare courtyard, outdoor, covered with dry leaves. In the third, the action is in a dark room of the Charlotte´s house, and the forth act occurs during a snowstorm (a magnificent effect) where the small Werther room appears to take over the center stage.

Maestro Antonio Pappano superiorly directed the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.

The soloists, all were at their best. Joyce DiDonato is one of my favorite singers and, once again, she was at her best. She has a beautiful voice, not as dark as other interpreters of Charlotte, but the wealth and vocal sophistication are unsurpassed. Also excellent was her performance onstage, always magnificent but reached the top when reading the letters in the 3rd act.

Vittorio Grigolo has not an exceptionally beautiful voice, but he always interpreters the characters with total dedication and great intelligence. He did it again. The voice is strong, well placed, with a striking and secure high register. Scenically he was excellent, a real actor on stage, passionate, impulsive and desperate, greatly helped by the agility and his good figure. (Better and unsurpassed only Jonas Kaufmann, in the same production, in Paris. It is recorded on DVD and that was perhaps the best interpretation of Kaufmann who I had the opportunity to see).

Heather Engebretson sang Sofia, the sister of Charlotte. I did not know her and I was quite impressed. She has a light, youthful and well placed voice, always well audible. The slight figure of the singer could not be more suited to the role.

Also very solid and convincing was baritone David Bizic, in the role of Albert, the husband of Charlotte. Jonathan Summers was a proper father and Yuriy Yurchuk as Johann and François Piolino as Schmidt were also very good.
