RIGOLETTO, METropolitan Opera, Dezembro / December 2022

(review in English below)

RIGOLETTO, MEtropolitan Opera, December 2022

Bartlett Sher's performance of Verdi's opera Rigoletto was again performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

The action takes place in Germany, in the Republic of Weimar, but it is a classic, showy staging and where the main components of the opera are present and represented in a very perceptible way.

Speranza Scappucci's musical direction was not up to the performance. There were several disagreements between the orchestra and the singers and the imposed rhythms were not always the most suitable for the action. It was a pity because the Orchestra and the Chorus were grate.

This time something rare happened in opera, all the soloists were excellent!

French tenor Benjamin Bernheim was a fabulous Duke. He has a wide, fresh voice, very beautiful timbre, impressive power and great musicality. And on stage he was a real actor, the young and thin figure helps a lot.

The Italian soprano Rosa Feola made a perfect Gilda. Voice always audible over the orchestra, in tune, beautiful and expressive. On stage she was also perfect.

The American baritone Quinn Kelsey was a Rigoletto like I haven't seen live in a long time. It's a difficult role, nowadays there are few singers who sing and represent it correctly and Kelsey is one of them. He was fantastic.

They also deserve mention for their excellent performances Bradley Garvin as Monterone, the fantastic John Relyea as Sparafucile, and the stunning Aigul Akhmetshina as Maddalena.

A fabulous performance.

L’ELISIR D’AMORE, Wiener Staatsoper, Novembro / November 2018

(review in English below)

L'ELISIR D'AMORE, Wiener Staatsoper, November 2018

L'Elisir d'Amore is not one of Donizetti's operas that I count among my favorites, far from it. But, when well staged and well sung, it can be an excellent show. Otto Schenk's production is as classic and dated as possible. Scenery beautiful but static, very conventional colthes, like everything else. A country setting with a house in detail.

Once again we had a female conductor, Speranza Scappuci, who did a good job.
I had never heard any of the soloist singers live.

Aida Garifullina is one of the many Russian sopranos that have been internationally successful in recent times. She is a beautiful, young, lean, beautiful woman, excellent for the role of Adina. The voice is interesting, well audible and in tune, but in the top register it sometimes slips into stridency, ma non troppo. The coloratura was not brilliant.

Nemorino of French tenor Benjamin Bernheim was, by far, the best of the night. He has a very beautiful voice, big, never failed and emotionally interpreted some of the main interventions. The audience here, knowledgeable, gave him the strongest applause of the night, well deserved.

Belcore of the Turkish baritone Orhan Yildiz was another tall, lean and young singer, also great for the role. he even has a nice voice, but it was small and badly projected, frequently it was not heard. It was a pity.

Doctor Dulcamara was interpreted by Paolo Rumetz who, having been ok, was not exciting. He simply complied without dazzling (scenic and vocal).

Giannetta was a young Ethiopian, Mariam Battistelli, with a very fresh and jovial voice.

In the end, it was another good performance, but miles away from the real masterpiece that was the London production I saw recently and that, with that production, with Pretty Yende and Liparit Avetisyan, was one of the best opera performances that I remember seeing.
