COSÌ FAN TUTTE, Royal Opera House, Julho / July 202

(review in English below)

COSI FAN TUTTE, Royal Opera House, July 2022

It was with great pleasure that I reviewed the production at the Royal Opera House in London of Mozart's opera Così fan Tutte.

Jan Philipp Gloger's staging is very pleasant, mixing different time periods and picturing the performance in the performance within the show. During the overture, the singers appear, dressed in 18th century clothes, thanking the audience for the applause, making the gestures they usually do on this occasion. Later we realize that these are not the soloists, the two couples appear in the audience and are members of the public of the Royal Opera. The successive parts are very varied, mixing periods: a modern bar, a train station from the middle of the last century, the garden of Eden with apples, money and the snake, a baroque theater, and the end with a giant panel where Cosi Fan Tutte(i) is lit. It's a showy, cheerful and very diverse staging.

Conductor Richard Hetherington (replacing Julia Jones) was great and the orchestra was at a high level.

The soloist singers were all excellent. The two pairs of bride and groom were young, which gave great credibility to the scenic interpretation. German bass baritone Gordon Bintner was a Guglielmo with a beautiful, firm and powerful voice. His presence was always very agile and insinuating, much favored by his figure.

Russian tenor Bogdan Volkov was a very lyrical and beautiful-voiced Ferrando, although he was the singer who least impressed me, despite being very good.

Jennifer Davis, Irish soprano, is a singing colossus! Huge voice, beautiful, agile and in tune. Excellent in the emotionality of the aria Per pietà, ben mio, perdona, she was fabulous throughout the performance.

French-Canadian mezzo Julie Boulianne was a Dorabella with a beautiful voice that was always well and in tune throughout the entire opera. On stage, a very good performance.

Veteran Italian baritone Lucio Gallo was a Don Alfonso very well adapted to the character and always sang at the highest level.

Italian soprano Serena Gamberoni was perhaps the best Despina I have seen and heard. Excellent movement on stage, very energetic and the vocal interpretation was also of a high quality.

An excellent performance!

COSÌ FAN TUTTE – Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Março 2022

(review in English below)

Estava garantido o sucesso do espectáculo.

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation offered us the magnificent opera Così fan tutte by Mozart in a semi-staged version, very good and effective by Marcos Fink, which allowed for an easy understanding of the plot.

If there are operas that lend themselves to easy staging, this is one of them. Lorenzo da Ponte's libretto (simplifying) portrays two sisters (Fiordiligi and Dorabella) very much in love with their military fiancés (Ferrando and Guglielmo), swearing eternal fidelity to them. Don Alfonso, a philosopher, bets with them that their brides will allow themselves to be seduced by other men as soon as they leave, a fact that both of them reject outright. Combined with Don Alfonso, they pretend to go to war and appear disguised as Albanians. The two sisters end up being seduced, each by the other's fiancé, in less than a day. There are also important participations of a maid experienced in life (Despina), including in the role of doctor and notary.

The competent musical direction was by Nuno Coelho and the Gulbenkian Orchestra had another quality interpretation. The Gulbenkian Choir was also very good. The singers were all young, good looking, and they sang and performed flawlessly. The show's success was guaranteed.

Moldovan soprano Valentina Nafornita was a breathtaking Fiordiligi. She has a fabulous voice, with enormous range and great versatility. The role is very demanding and she played and sung it perfectly.

French mezzo Natalie Pérez was also exceptional as Dorabella. Magnificent voice, very beautiful, always in tune. Superlative interpretation.

Turkish tenor Ilker Arcayürek was very good. The timbre is a little strange at the beginning but, as the performance progresses, he is a Ferrando of great quality.

German baritone Samuel Hasselhorn was a perfect Guglielmo, both in scenic and vocal interpretation.

Despina was played by South Korean Sunhae Im. Very expressive and funny on stage, the role lends itself to that. The light lyrical soprano voice is less powerful but no less expressive and effective.

Finally, Don Alfonso was fantastically interpreted by the Argentine bass Marcos Fink, who maintains a respectable voice with a very pleasant timbre.

I end by referring to the excellent (!) introduction to the opera by Jorge Rodrigues an hour before the start, in another Gulbenkian auditorium.

COSÌ FAN TUTTE, METropolitan Opera, Fevereiro / February 2020

(review in English below)

Phelim McDermott's production of Mozart's Così fan Tutte opera brings the action in a Coney Island-inspired amusement park in New York in the 1950s.
Although different, it is a very successful show, dynamic, full of humorous moments, with scenes alternating between a motel and the park. Right at the beginning, from a magician's chest, many characters of the park's multiple attractions come out with panels with words that, alternating positions between themselves, construct several sentences that define what will happen.

The orchestra was wonderful, under the competent direction of maestro Harry Bicket.

The singers, young and dynamic on stage, had excellent performances, they were all of great quality and Mozart's music and Lorenzo da Ponte's libretto did the rest.

Tenor Ben Bliss was a Ferrando with a soft and melodious voice and his top moment was the aria Una aura amorosa.

Baritone Luca Pisaroni interpreted Guglielmo in a manly manner and with a powerful and always in tune voice, along with an excellent scenic component.

Don Alfonso was baritone Gerald Finley, almost machiavellian, who also had an excellent voice and great presence. The staging also helps him a lot.

Soprano Nicole Car was a fabulous Fiordiligi, for me the best of the night, although within an excellent set. She has a beautiful tone and was very emotional in the interpretation. In the first act, she was notable in the aria Come scoglio and touching in Per pieta in the second act.

Also fantastic was mezzo Serena Malfi as Dorabella. Beautiful, tuned voice and excellent stage presence.

Despina by Heidi Stober was the most comical female element, as expected, and this staging helps a lot. She also sang very well, always pleasant and above the orchestra, and showed remarkable versatility.

An excellent show.

COSÌ FAN TUTTE, Royal Opera House, Londres / London, Setembro / September 2016

(review in English below)

Così fan Tutte, Royal Opera House, London

The new production of Mozart's opera Così fan tutte is another triumph of the prestigious Royal Opera House in London.

The staging by young director Jan Philipp Gloger is interesting, unique and very pleasant, although it mixes different periods of time that sometimes breaks the continuity of the action. Gloger uses, again, a show within the show.

Just in the opening the soloists singers appear, dressed in Mozart’s time, and thank the applause of the audience, making the gestures usually singers make on this occasion. Quickly we realize that these are not the soloists. The two couples appear in the audience and are members of the audience of the Royal Opera.

Don Alfonso is a director of the play and will run until the end. Guglielmo and Ferrando go to war. The setting with a train station in the middle of last century is well managed. Disguised, they reappear in a modern bar and then begin the conquest of their brides. In another setting the garden of Eden appears, with many apples, money and the serpent. There are also settings in which the action takes place in a baroque theater environment.

At the end, the wedding party is very dynamic. In a large display panel where it is written COSÌ FAN TUTTE, the removal some lamps from the E and turns into COSÌ FAN TUTTI.

The staging is fine, cheerful, very diverse, but a little confusing. One of the main messages that the director wants to give is that the instability of human emotions does not only apply only to women, but to all and at all times.

Russian maestro Semyon Bychkov was very good, although some times he imposed excessively slow tempi. The orchestra was at the highest level.

The soloists were all excellent. The two couples were young, which gave great credibility to the stage interpretation and allowed some moments of eroticism.

Italian bass-baritone Alessio Arduini was a Guglielmo with a beautiful, firm and powerful voice. His presence always very agile and ingratiating, much favored by his figure.

German tenor Daniel Behle was a more romantic and very credible Ferrando. The beautiful aria Un'aura amorosa was magnificent, with a top register of unusual beauty.

Corinne Winters, American soprano, was a fragile Fiordiligi with a warm beautiful soprano voice. She was particularly well in the arias Come scoglio and especially Per pieta, ben mio, perdona that she sang with touching sensitivity and sadness. Fantastic.

American mezzo Angela Brower was a lyrical Dorabella with firm voice that was always in tune throughout the performance.

German baritone Johannes Martin Kränzle was a firm and very well suited to the character of Don Alfonso, and Spanish soprano Sabina Puértolas was an energetic Despina with high quality, vocal and scenic.

The Royal Opera bet on youth (director and singers) and, once again, won.
