A FLAUTA MÁGICA / DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, METropolitan Opera, Outubro / October 2017

(review in English below)

Dirigiu a excelente Orquestra do Met o maestro emérito James Levine.

THE MAGIC FLUTE / DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, METropolitan Opera, October 2017

The Magic Flute of W Mozart was again on stage at the METropolitan Opera in New York.

Julie Taymor's staging is of great visual impact, though it is not beautiful. It is filled with masonic symbols and there is a great diversity of fantastic creatures throughout the performance along Tamino’s initiatory journey. The three Ladies in the service of the Queen of the Night appear each with a large mask in their hand, which allows a spectacular effect. Papageno is conventionally dressed as a bird catcher. Tamino and Pamina also appear in colorful costumes but the most spectacular are Sarastro, the Queen of the Night and Monostatos. Scenarios change often and the mystic atmosphere keeps on throughout the opera.

Emeritus maestro James Levine directed the excellent Met Orchestra.

North American tenor Charles Castronovo was a Tamino of great vocal quality, always audible over the orchestra and with excellent presence on stage.

Austrian baritone Markus Werba was one of the best of the night. He was a faultless Papageno. he has a beautiful and tuned voice, not very big, but perfectly adapted to the character. On stage he was fantastic, offering an energetic and very comical interpretation.

Sarastro was superiorly interpreted by the German bass Tobias Kehrer. He has a powerful, bass voice, tuned and with a very pleasant timbre.

South African soprano Golda Schultz was a remarkable Pamina. She has a beautiful voice and a very pleasant tone. And she was very convincing on stage.

The Queen of Night was performed by North American soprano Kathryn Bowden, a last-minute replacement. She was globally very well, always audible over the orchestra, although occasionally she has touched stridency. She was the most applauded of the night but for me she was not the best among this remarkable set of top quality singers.

Ashley Emerson (Papagena), Greg Fedderly (a funny Monostatos) and the three ladies, Wendy Bryn Harmer, Sarah Mesko and Tamara Mumford also had great performances.

DIE ZAUBERFLOTE / A FLAUTA MÁGICA METropolitan Opera, Outubro de 2014 / October 2014

(review in english below)

Dirigiu a excelente Orquestra do Met o maestro húngaro Adam Fischer.

Die Zauberflöte / The Magic Flute Metropolitan Opera, October 2014

The Magic Flute by WA Mozart was onstage at the beginning of this season at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

The staging by Julie Taymor is fantastic and of great visual impact. It is full of masonic symbols and does not include egyptian elements, as is often seen. But there is a huge range of fantastic creatures throughout the opera. The three ladies in the service of the Queen of the Night appear each with a large mask in hand, which allows for a spectacular effect whenever they are on the stage. Papageno (and Papagena) dress conventionally as bird catchers. Tamino and Pamina also appear in showy costumes but the most spectacular are Sarastro, the Queen of the Night and Monostados, as you can see in the photographs. The scenarios change frequently, are effective, and the mystical ambience is kept throughout the opera.

Directed the great Met Orchestra Hungarian conductor Adam Fischer. The Choir was also impressive.

Toby Spence, English tenor, was a Tamino with great vocal quality, always audible and well tuned. The character was overly stylized, which did not benefit the stage action.

Also great vocally and very well onstage was Papageno by Austrian baritone Markus Werba. The voice is not very big but could always be heard and he had a very expressive interpretation.

Bass René Pape as Sarastro imposed as the best male performance. Fabulous low register always in tune, great voice. Better would be difficult.

South African soprano Pretty Yende was an excellent Pamina. She has a very melodious, clear voice, with a very nice beautiful timbre. And had a great stage presence.

Macedonian soprano Ana Durlovski was not a remarkable Queen of Night. The coloratura was not perfect and vocal intensity was not constant. But, in general, she was ok.

Of the remaining singers are noteworthy, the very good performances of Ashley Emerson as Papagena, the three ladies, Amy Shoremount Manpower, Renée Tatum and Margaret Lattimore, and above all, the spectacular interpretation, vocal and on stage of Mark Schowalter as Monostatos.

Le Nozze di Figaro de W. A. Mozart - 16 de Outubro de 2012, Wiener Staatsoper

(review in English below)

--------
(review in English)

Le Nozze di Figaro is the first opera of the Da Ponte trilogy. It was composed and premiered in Vienna in 1786 and it is an opera buffa in four acts that mirrored and challenged some high society behaviours of the time.

The staging of Jean-Louis Martinoty was simple and based on several suspended frames that transported us to the several scenarios where the action evolves. Clothing was totally classic. It was, therefore, a conventional staging, but effective, that perfectly followed the script.

Jérémie Rhorer conducted the orchestra. I am not of the opinion that it was brilliantly performed, since it lacked some energy and shine, so it was only one median quality interpretation that accompanied well the performers.

The Choir has a minor role here, but did well when intervened, including female voices.

Figaro was the baritone Markus Werba. He has a voice with beautiful timbre that he projected easily, and was able to do the Mozartian phrasing his role demands. He was in good level and was, overall, the best male voice performance.

Susana was the soprano Miah Persson. She presented a voice with a something rough sharp, although almost always balanced, and vocal projection with some imperfections. It was not an exceptional vocal performance - it lacked the sweetness and also Susana’s sagacity - and it was, in our view, a bit better scenically.

The Countess d'Almaviva was the soprano Olga Bezsmertna. With a beautiful timbre and a sharp well maintained, she did technically well and was scenically compelling. Despite not having excelled, she was the best female interpretation of the night.

The Count d'Almaviva was baritone Pietro Spagnoli. He was in good level, with a voice with a beautiful timbre and range, but with some difficulties in projection, fulfilling scenically well.

Marcelina was the soprano Monika Bohinec. She introduced herself, especially initially, with a nasal voice, but she improved throughout the recitation. From the point of view of interpretation she was good, although far from perfect.

Bartolo was the bass Sorin Coliban. He has a very beautiful voice with plenty of volume and clean that he projected well. Very safe interpretively, he offered us an excellent moment in his aria Tutta Sevilla conosce Bartolo.

The young Cherubino was incarnate by soprano Lena Belkina. She was in relatively good plan vocally, but not enchanted, lacking melody, and her acute is neither particularly beautiful nor expressive, which was well demonstrated in her two most famous and demanding arias.

In short, it was a recitation of just sufficient overall quality, with pretty classic scenarios, but whose interpretations, though homogeneous not stays in memory, either by the odd quality, nor lack of it by.
