LA TRAVIATA – Royal Opera House, Londres / London, Abril / April 2022

(review in English below)

The Royal Opera in London keeps on stage Richard Eyre's sumptuous production of the opera La Traviata by G. Verdi, perhaps my favorite of the many I've seen.
I attended two performances on the same day, with different casts. The conductors were Giacomo Sagripanti, who set a sometimes excessively fast pace, and Renato Balsadonna, more to my liking.

As Violetta two truly exceptional sopranos. The South African Pretty Yende, which I've heard several times. She's one of my favorite singers right now and she's shown it again. She has a magnificent voice, an unusually beautiful timbre and plays the characters irreproachably. The Armenian Hrachuhí Bassénz, who I had never seen or heard, also dazzled me with her interpretive, vocal and scenic qualities.

Alfredo was played by tenors Stephen Costello and Egor Zhuravskii (from the Jette Parker program) who replaced Dmytro Popov. Costello was acceptable, but not impressed, the voice falls short of what one would expect for a show in this theater. The young Zhuravskii sang very well, but he was always very static and a little nervous, which is understandable given that he was a last-minute substitution.

Of the baritones who played Giorgio Germont, Dimitri Platanias was excellent. The singer has an expressive, beautiful and powerful voice. Vladimir Stoyanov was also well, but the interpretation was inferior to Platanias.

In the secondary characters we had Angela Simkin (Flora in the 2 performances), Germán Alcantara and Yuriy Yurchuk (Baron Duphol), Davis Shipley and Blaise Malaba from the Jette Parker program (Dr Grenvil) and Kseniia Nikolaieva from the Jette Parker program and Gaynor Keeble (Annina). Of all of them, I distinguish the fabulous vocal interpretation of Kseniia Nikolaieva, a fabulous voice that we will hear in the future in more relevant characters.

LA TRAVIATA Wiener Staatsoper 7 Março 2021

(Review in English below)

Simon Stone's staging brought the action to the present day. He used a rotating stage and projected many images that allowed the action to be framed. In the 1st act, participants took selfies and exchanged messages on social networks. The protagonist was the figure of an advertisement for a perfume, she wore and had luxurious props.

The 2nd act was spent in a rural environment in which Alfredo stepped grapes to make wine (but without rolling up his pants) and Violetta was dealing with a tractor.

The 3rd act was the worst, in bad taste, with explicit sexual references, ridiculous and inconsequential masks. The game was made on a “tablet”. In the last act, Violetta initially appears in a day hospital chair, receiving a serum that she rejects. After wandering among trash bins, she ends up in a hospital bed.

If the staging was controversial and uninteresting, the singing was different. The soprano Pretty Yende did not start in the best way but, from the 2nd act on, she had an excellent performance, both scenic and vocal. Tenor Juan Diego Flórez was also at the best level, both in singing and acting. Baritone Igor Golovatenko complied without being dazzled, he was always static, little emotional and missed some notes. Donna Ellen was a very competent Annina.

The most disappointing and sad thing was the absence of an audience!

A good opera show, although online.

La Traviata - Wiener Staatsoper - Live broadcast

The Vienna State Opera offers today the live broadcast of La Traviata, opera by G Verdi.

The production and the main soloists are mentioned above. Among them two potentially great interpreters, Juan Diego Florez and Pretty Yendy that can be a notorious Violetta.

A "must see" in these times of absolute absence of opera. In the following site:

LA TRAVIATA, Arena di Verona, Agosto / August 2019

(text in English below)

Texto de wagner_fanatic

Leo Nucci volta a trazer-me à Arena de Verona.

LA TRAVIATA, Arena of Verona, August 2019

Text by Wagner_fanatic.

Leo Nucci brings me back to the Arena di Verona. Last year with his Barber of Seville, the evening was special, not only for the most likely last time to hear him in this role, but also because it was my Arena debut.

This year was different and I think even more special. In the year of Franco Zeffirelli's death, his last performance, this La Traviata, was reason enough for the honor of watching it live. But to this was added Leo Nucci, superlatively accompanied by Lisette Oropesa and Vittorio Grigolo.

Leo Nucci remains a phenomenon of longevity, a living legend, an Italian Opera Lord. The voice needs a few minutes to open but that's all. Then he stays the same in time now, especially when the atmosphere is right for him (and the Arena's is), to rise even higher, to modulate the phrases into an interpretation that confuses the character with the man and singer. A duet with Violetta, a lyrical and meaningful Di Provenza, and a remarkable second act ending!

From Vittorio Grigolo we all know his hysterionism, both physical and vocal... although sometimes he goes overboard and touches a little the ridiculous interpretation, which is certain that, apart from these few moments, there should be no singer who can express himself so passionately. And it is a pity that so few get it on this level. The beginning of the second act was one of those moments when Grigolo singing / performing, almost seemed to be having a sexual relationship with the score. The Ogni suo aver tal femmina was brutal, contrasting emotionally with the ensuing regret. One of the biggest moments of the night, clearly!

Lisette Oropesa is a phenomenon! The voice is beautiful, good projection, impeccable top notes and a very rare quality interpretative evolution of Violetta!

Daniel Oren is an amazing conductor! The faces he makes as if demented or post-stroke, the emotional gestures that go far beyond mere baton shaking, the passionate grunts, the talking to the orchestra in the middle of the opera (shouted loudly stacatto to the strings because they weren't doing it properly) and thanking him with the brand image of his outstretched arms is a sight outside the opera but ... inside it.

Zeffirelli was remembered at the end with a photo on the screen of the subtitles, followed by a repeat of Libiamo ne'lieti calici in a party atmosphere and Oren directing the stage and interacting with the singers. In the end, special thanks to the stands, with an effusive Grigolo pulling everyone and a well-deserved motivational support from Nucci to Oropesa. These are the great artists. The Arena is a different, magical space, and whenever you enter it, in its magnitude and grandeur, it makes us feel cozy, incredible as it may seem. It is the warmth of the opera, the warmth of its filler and the spirit of its history.

LA TRAVIATA, Bayreshe Staatsoper, Julho / July 2019

(review in English below)

La Traviata began by announcing, in German only, the cancellation of Placido Domingo in the role of Giorgio Germont. It was an ooohhhh! in the room, but my contentment, I confess! I think he can sell a lot of tickets, but his baritone voice has already given the littlehe had to give, so thank you.

The strong point of the evening was even the perfect direction of Marco Armiliato: for me, he is one of the great maestros of today and seeing him up close was a privilege and an auditory delight. Also the choir was in good plan. The staging of Gunter Kramer is not interesting at any time, but it does not spoil, which is not bad, since in this theater I have seen a lot of crap.
With regard to the cast of singers, the general quality was very high and homogeneous that raised the performance to a very, very good level. Violeta by Ailyn Pérez was very well from the vocal point of view: intense and correct. It is a pity that a little connection has been made, because it would have been even better, and that she said "ritorno a vincere" instead of "a vivere". She almost seemed bothered by this failure to finish!
Alfredo by Atalla Ayan was also good: I really like the timbre and the presence, always has very good volume, although he was somewhat irregular especially in the first act.
The Germont of the Romanian baritone George Petean was very good: warm timbre, high volume, richly interesting, was one of the figures of the night and getting the most ovation. It's a shame that he was mistaken twice in the lyrics, saying something crazy. But I bet it passed along for most of the audience.
The remaining singers were all very good so the performance was worth the homogeneity and brilliance of the direction of Armiliato.
