Gabriella Pace, foto Internet.

DAS RHEINGOLD, Metropolitan Opera, May 2013

Das Rheingold is the prologue in four scenes from the Ring of the Nibelung by R. Wagner.

In Robert Lepage´s staging the most spectacular aspects of this first opera are in the very first scene, the daughters of the Rhine suspended, swimming, and when they settle on the river bottom and whenever they move, they cause the fall of large amounts of small stones. The third scene is also very well done, not only the descent to Nibelheim as well as Mime and the Nibelungs merging of the gold. Alberich's transformation into a giant snake and then into a frog are showy. Finally, after the storm, the rising of the gods to Walhalla that appears as a rainbow on the back of the stage has great visual impact.

The soloists were mostly very good.

The best of the night was Slovakian tenor Stefan Margita who played the semi god of fire, Loge. His very melodious and pleasant voice was always audible and tuned, He appeared wrapped in lights that simulated fire and performed excellently. When I saw him in the Munich´s Ring in the same role, he was equally remarkable. At present there should be no better Loge.

Fricka was interpreted by American mezzo Elizabeth Bishop, replacing Stephanie Blythe. She was OK in the role and offered us a beautiful interpretation. She was strong vocally and artistically  compelling. The voice is beautiful, deep and always well projected.

American bass-baritone Richard Paul Fink was the weak link in the night. He interpreted Alberich in a deficient way. We could not hear him well, the voice is small and not nice. He is not a top quality singer to justify a solo role at the Met.

Wotan was interpreted by American bass-baritone Greer Grimsley. He was good, the voice is very respectable, ever heard above the orchestra and he was credible onstage.

Also remarkable was the quality of interpretation of Freia by American soprano Wendy Bryn Harmer that in the top notes, was secure and did not shout.

The two giants, Fasolt and Fafner, were interpreted by German basses Franz-Josef Selig and Hans-Peter König and they were two of the best singers of the night. Powerful voices, imposing bass notes and good stage presence.

If Richard Cox´s Froh was very weak, deserve positive remarks the American mezzo Meredith Arwady that was a powerful Erda, the American tenor Robert Brubaker who left an excellent impression as Mime and American baritone Dwayne Croft as Donner. The three daughters of the Rhine were also very good, Dísella Lárusdóttir (Woglinde), Jennifer Johnson Cano (Wellgunde) and Renée Tatum (Flossilde).

The Met’s Ring had a good start.

O OURO DO RENO (DAS RHEINGOLD), Bayerische Staatsoper, Munique, Janeiro de 2013 / Munich, January 2013

(review in English below)

e as três Filhas do Reno, Woglinde (soprano japonês Eri Nakamura), Wellgunde (soprano norte americano Angela Brower) e, particularmente notável, Flossilde (contralto alemão Okka von der Damerau).

O Anel não poderia ter começado melhor!

DAS RHEINGOLD, Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich, January 2013

Das Rheingold is the first opera of the Nibelung’s Ring cycle by Richard Wagner. The staging was by Andreas Kriegenburg.

When we enter the theater the stage has numerous men and women dressed casually in white. They are chatting in groups and some take a drink or eat something.

We start to hear water running and, in a perfect continuous, the music starts with the leitmotif of the Rhine. The supernumeraries join at the back of the stage, undress pieces of clothing and gradually spread around the stage, painted in dark blue, the color of the water which their movements suggest. The three Daughters of the Rhine arise dressed in light blue and then Alberich, in a dark and disheveled appearance. The gold of the Rhein appears in the form of a naked woman, fully golden, among the supernumeraries.
Alberich renounces love and steals the gold.
In front of Walhall, represented backstage by the supranumeraries, Fricka criticizes Wotan for having promised her sister Freia to the giants in exchange for the construction of the palace. The giants Fasolt and Fafner appear dressed in dark blue on men stacked cubes. They take Freia, whose absence announces the death of the gods. Loge, god of fire, impeccably dressed in a red suit and a with an elegant cane decides, together with Wotan, to recover the gold.

They descend into the depths of the earth, the Nibelhem, where Alberich, with a ring made with the stolen gold, enslaves the Nibelungs, represented by gold miners working by the whip. Many do not survive the stress and die. The scenic effect is exceptional! Mime, his brother, forged a magic helmet that transforms or turns invisible whoever wears it. Wotan and Loge arrest Alberich to the spear and retrieve the ring.

In exchange for the release of the Nibelung Alberich, Wotan receives the ring, the gold and the magic helmet. Alberich curses to the ring. Erda, mother of the gods, appears totally in white and surrounded by supernumeraries also in white and advises Wotan to get rid of the ring. He rejects because he intends to take advantage of the unlimited power that this confers.

The curse of the ring begins to be effective. Fafner, whom the ring was delivered by Wotan in exchange for the release of Freia, kills Fasolt with a dagger that is the basis of Loge’s cane, who gives it to him “accidentally", in another great scenic achievement.

The gods ascend to Walhall and the Daughters of the Rhine regret the loss of the gold.
The soloists were, overall, excellent.
Estonian bass Egils Silins was a Wotan with good vocal and scenic presence. He was not stunning but he sung with safety and expressiveness. The voice is not very big but it was always well audible.

Stefan Margita, Czech tenor, was an exceptional Loge. His voice is slightly nasal, has a peculiar timbre and is perfect for the role. Artistically
eh was unsurpassed. One of the superlative performers of the night.Fricka was the Austrian mezzo Elisabeth Kulman. If, at present days, there are several singers that are excellent Frickas, very few are able to match Kulman’s quality. Her voice is of remarkable beauty and striking power. The singer looks good and on stage she acts above the usual. She was another superlative performer of the evening.
Also Catherine Wyn-Jones, British mezzo, was a fantastic Erda, with powerful and strong low register voice, well suited to the role.

Johannes Martin Kränzle, German baritone, was an Alberich always with remarkable vocal projection and good stage presence.

The German tenor Ulrich Ress was an excellent Mime and anticipated a remarkable interpretation in the opera Siegfried, what would happen.

The other soloists were also of superior quality, including Hungarian baritone Levente Molnár as Donner, Russian tenor Sergey Skorokhodov as Froh, North American bass Steven Humes as Fafner, bass Thorsten Grümbel as Fasolt, Polish soprano Aga Mikolaj as Freia (the least impressive among all), and the three daughters of the Rhine, Woglinde (Japanese soprano Eri Nakamura), Wellgunde (North American soprano Angela Brower) and, remarkably, Flossilde (German contralto Okka von der Damerau).
The Ring cycle could not have started better!
