AGRIPPINA; METropolitan Opera, Fevereiro / February 2020

(text in English below)

AGRIPPINA; METropolitan Opera, February 2020

The history of the opera Agrippina by Handel can be read in this “post”, recently written about a performance of the same opera in London.

In David McVicar's successful production, the action was brought to the present era where multiple intrigues occur and, very clearly, Agrippina's perfidious and manipulative ability take place. Several comic components are funny, others less so. The scenarios are very dynamic, surrounded by large columns and movable walls, but almost always dominated by a high golden staircase at the top of which is the throne that many want. In the second act there is a part that takes place in a bar, with the pleasant presence of a harpsichord on stage, played at the highest level by Bradley Brookshire (the orchestra's harpsichord was played by the conductor). Poppea's attempt, unsuccessfully, to hide behind a vase of flowers is funny, but the other humorous moments are not fun. The opera begins and ends with the main characters on their graves.

Conductor Harry Bicket was great and, as I mentioned, played also the harpsichord. The orchestra also performed very well.

Agrippina by Joyce DiDonato, as always, was at the highest level. She is an actress who sings in a fabulous way and, once again, enchanted. The voice fills the theater, touches all the audience deeply and impresses in quality, volume and emotionality. She was the best on stage, but she was well accompanied.

Mezzo Kate Lindsey was a fantastic Nerone, an athlete on stage, very comical too and with a powerful, tuned and very pleasant voice. I prefer this role sung by a countertenor, but this interpretation was excellent.

Countertenor Iestyn Davies was a very lyrical Ottone, has a voice of great beauty but the dimension of the theater is not favorable to him. Scenically he was static, despite the good figure of the singer.

Soprano Brenda Rae made Poppea very good at performing. However, the voice with a pleasant timbre, with some fragility in the coloratura, had an irregular emission and, at times, was muffled by the orchestra.

Bass Matthew Rose was Claudio, without being dazzled.

In supporting roles, but with good performances, were baritone Duncan Rock (Pallante), countertenor Nicholas Tamagna (Narciso) and baritone Christian Zaremba (Lesbo).

LA BOHÈME, METropolitan Opera, Outubro / October 2018

(review in English below)

The production of Puccini’s La Bohème at the Metropolitan Opera is still that of Franco Zeffirelli. It is very beautiful, has a monumental 2nd act well to the American likes and is always seen with great pleasure. It has been commented on this blog several times.

The conductor was an American newcomer, James Gaffigan, who directed with great quality. Excellent orchestra, impeccable choir and always audible soloists.

In the main role another debutant, Australian soprano Nicole Car that was a Mimì of great quality. The singer has a good figure for the character. The voice is beautiful and crystal clear (although at first she was spared a little). In the final acts, she was excellent.

Tenor Vitorio Grigolo was an agile Rodolfo, passionate, apprehensive and, in the end, desperate. He has a very peculiar and effective way of singing, the voice is increasing in size and the timbre is very pleasant.

Musetta was performed by soprano Angel Blue who was vocally correct and effective on stage.

Another debut was baritone Etienne Dupuis who made a very credible Marcello with great vocal quality. He has a beautiful tuned voice.

Also well were Davide Luciano as Schaunard, Matthew Rose as Colline (the aria Vecchia zimarra senti was excellent) and Donald Maxwell as Benoit / Alcindoro.

LA BOHÈME, METropolitan Opera, Fevereiro / February 2018

(text in English below)

Franco Zeffirelli's fine staging of La Bohème by G. Puccini remains on stage at the Metropolitan Opera and is always applauded by the public. It has been commented on this blog several times before, so I will not do it again.

Maestro Marco Armiliato directed the magnificent Orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera without worrying about the singers, which has been a (bad) habit in his recent directions.

Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva made a vocally irreproachable Mimi. She is an impressive lyric soprano, of beautiful timbre, does not shout and interprets with equal quality all vocal records. She was particularly well in the first and third acts, where she has major interventions. On stage she was a little below the desirable, especially in the last act.

Rodolfo was played by American tenor Michael Fabiano. The voice is voluminous, and lyrical, but the emission is irregular, alternating periods of excellence with others of lower quality. Also he was not at the higher level in the scenic interpretation, which he fulfilled without dazzling.

Marcello of the American baritone Lucas Meachem was regular in the scenic and vocal interpretation. He was good, but I've seen much better performances.

American mezzo Susanna Phillips was a fun and very expressive Musetta. She was vocally acceptable and the stage performance was fine. Zeffirelli’s staging helps a lot.

In supporting roles Schaunard of Russian baritone Alexey Lavrov was ok, Benoit (and Alcindoro) of Paul Plishka was regular and Colline of English bass Matthew Rose was correct but not exciting.

A good performance, especially at the expense of the staging and the performance of Sonya Yoncheva.
