MACBETH, METropolitan Opera, Outubro / October 2019

(review in English below)

Loira e quase sempre descalça, surge numa cama, lê a carta do marido e canta magistralmente a primeira ária Vieni, t’affretta!

MACBETH, METropolitan Opera,  October 2019

Verdi's Macbeth opera was once again performed at New York's Metropolitan Opera. Adrian Noble's production transports the action to the post-WWII period in Scotland. It is minimalist but attractive and very effective. Under a forest in the background, the palace is made up of large black movable columns, with only chandeliers, chairs and a large towel. The witches come dressed as tramps.

Directed maestro Marco Armiliato and the Choir and the Orchestra were at top level.

Macbeth was played by baritone Zeljko Lucic after Placido Domingo's dismissal on the day before the premiere following the unspeakable episodes of potential sexual harassment (from decades ago in the case of Domingo) that have peppered several opera artists, transforming the opera world of today as a real Mexican soap opera. Lucic has a beautiful tone, the voice is large but sings somewhat monotonously and was not very emotional, short of the requirement of the character.

Bass Ildar Abdrazakov was a very good Banquo. Has a good stage presence and a very nice and tuned voice. Because he dies early, he doesn't sing much.

Tenor Matthew Polenzani was a quality Macduff. This time the voice did not seem as nasal to me as on other occasions and the singer projected it with great effectiveness, always audible over the orchestra. He sang in tune and had a correct scenic performance.

I leave to the end the true protagonist of the opera, Lady Macbeth, played here by Anna Netrebko. She was colossal! Blonde and almost always barefoot, she appears in bed, reads her husband's letter and masterfully sings the first aria Vieni t'affretta! From then on she dominates the whole performance. Overflows sensuality, wickedness and dominance. The singing completely fills the huge auditorium and is of unparalleled beauty, adorned with stratospheric notes in perfect pitch. The famous sleepwalking scene Una macchia è qui tuttora culminates a superlative performance!

It is a privilege to be able to see and hear Anna Netrebko, who will make history as one of the greatest opera singers of the century.

DON GIOVANNI, METropolitan Opera, Nova Iorque / New York, Fevereiro / February 2019

(review in English below)

A Orquestra, fantástica.

DON GIOVANNI, METropolitan Opera, New York, February 2019

Mozart's opera Don Giovanni was once available at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Michael Grandage's staging, already commented on this blog, is classic and unimaginative, dominated by three-story buildings. It is in a Spanish city in the XVIII century. There is scenic mobility but it is very repetitive. The graveyard scene is more interesting and the end of Don Giovanni, when swallowed by flames, is spectacular live.

It was a very good performance, with a powerful cast and, with few exceptions, homogeneous. German conductor Cornelius Meister was very good, with great respect for the singers and for Mozart. The Orchestra was fantastic.

The singers were almost all top. Italian soprano Federica Lombardi (who I did not know) was good as Donna Elvira, beautiful voice, always well audible and good presence on stage.

Young American bass-baritone Brandon Cedel (Masetto), who also I did not know, was always very well, both in singing and acting.

Another unknown to me, French tenor Stanislas de Barbeyrac, was an excellent Don Ottavio in singing and on stage (the operas with young singers are always something else!).

A well-known of mine in this role, Slovakian bass Stefan Kocán was a vocally imposing, excellent Comendatore.

Venezuelan / Italian bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni, who I always saw as Leoporello, made a terrific Don Giovanni (scenic and vocally), far above my expectations.

On the other hand, Russian soprano Aida Garifullina (Zerlina) who won the Operalia a few years ago, sang at the opening and closing of the football World Cup last year in Russia, is beautiful, and is being pushed up in several theaters, sang well, but I do not like her timbre, and when she sings in the top register she has some tendency for stridency.

Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov was a fantastic Leoporello in scenic performance but the voice is relatively small and vocally was unconvincing.

I leave to the end the best, American soprano Rachel Willis-Sorensen who was out of this world. What a Donna Anna!! Fantastic, fabulous, phenomenal and everything else you could say. I've never seen or heard a Donna Anna like her!! And she seemed that she was singing with an amplifier, but also with all the drama that the character demands!

A performance of great quality.

DON CARLO, Royal Opera House, Londres / London, Maio / May de 2017

(review in english below)

DON CARLO, Royal Opera House, London, May 2017

This production of Don Carlo by Verdi that I had the opportunity to review at the Royal Opera House was commented here. Nicholas Hynter's staging is very good which helps the show a lot, although auto-da-fé has been greatly modified, for the worse.

The conductor, Bertrand de Billy, was not exciting and offered us a loose direction of the orchestra that, like the choir, were at the highest level.

Carlos was sung by American tenor Bryan Hymel and he was one of the best of the night. The voice is magnificent, very beautiful timbre, long, excellent top notes and emotive interpretation.

Elizabeth was American soprano Kristin Lewis (who replaced Krassimira Stoyanova) and fell short of my high expectations. The singer has a good stage presence, but the voice does not have a beautiful timbre and the emission was sometimes irregular. She always made herself heard, but when she sang in forte, her voice was rough and shrieked. ROH does not hit an Elizabeth at the highest level!

Rodrigo was the best surprise of the night. He was interpreted by the German baritone Christoph Pohl (unknown for me and replacing Ludovic Tézier). The singer has a magnificent voice, a timbre of unusual beauty and was excellent in the convincing and passionate way he played the character. A name to follow closely.

Russian mezzo Ekaterina Semenchuk was an Eboli who, at first, began somehow reserved, with some difficulty in the coloratura of the initial aria, but grew and finished in great with an excellent O Don Fatale both in stage and vocal interpretation.

As for the basses there were big differences. Russian Ildar Abdrazakov was an excellent Philip II, the voice is magnificent, the interpretation was as well, and the performance excellent. But the singer is too young for the role and even characterized, his youth is notorious. He was brilliant in the aria Ella giammai m'amo.
The Grand Inquisitor of the Georgian Paata Burchuladze was a disgrace, since the singer has practically no voice! It was a shame this role was not attributed to the young Italian Andrea Mastroni who interpreted at the highest level the short role of Charles V. The inversion of the interpreters would have substantially improved the recital.

But it was a very good performance.
