L’ELISIR D’AMORE, Teatro de São Carlos, Outubro / October 2022

(review in English below)

The opera L'Elisir d'Amore by G Donizetti opened the lyrical season at Teatro de São Carlos. A new production with production and staging by Mário João Alves.

Two ladders, some tables, and baskets and boxes with (many) oranges were the props used. The staging was pleasant, had several interesting parts and good visual effect, making the performance pleasant to watch. It takes place in a rural setting, on an orange farm or similar. Before his arrival (by parachute) Dr. Dulcamara throws pamphlets over the audience announcing her achievements. At the end, huge balloons simulating oranges are also thrown over the audience.

Maestro Antonio Pirolli offered us a good orchestration, but sometimes not very lively, and the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa played very well. I highlight the bassoon (David Harrison) and the harp (Carmen Cardeal) in the very famous aria Una furtiva lagrima. The São Carlos Theater Choir, under the direction of Giampaolo Vesselia, had an excellent performance.

The soloists were all young, which is great, but the performances weren't on the same level. Nemorino was interpreted by Spanish tenor Antonio Garés. He has a good figure but the vocal emission was irregular, alternating periods in which he was very audible with others that were barely audible. The timbre is peculiar and, in the highest register, he seems to sing in falsetto.

Soprano Rita Marques was Adina, who did not start well but improved throughout the performance and at the end of the 2nd act she had a remarkable performance, with a secure and in tune high register. On stage, she didn't show any attraction for either Belcore or Nemorino, a similar situation on their part as well.

Baritone Ricardo Panela, a singer I really appreciate, was a vocally correct Belcore, but the figure of the singer doesn't fit the character. He's too young and skinny for the role of sergeant. The staging and clothes didn't help either.

The best singer of the afternoon was the Chilean bass Ricardo Seguil as Dulcamara. He has a powerful voice, always very audible, very beautiful timbre and scenically he was the most credible.

Giannetta sung by Joana Seara was a pleasant presence.

MESSA DA REQUIEM G Donizetti, Teatro São Carlos, Lisboa, Julho 2021

(In English below)

MESSA DA REQUIEM G Donizetti, Teatro São Carlos, Lisbon, July 2021

I confess that it was with emotion that I returned to Teatro de São Carlos for the first time after the beginning of the pandemic.

Donizetti's Requiem Mass is a pleasant and beautiful work. The performance of the Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra was good, under the baton of an excellent conductor, Antonio Pirolli.

In this work the soloists have unequal interventions. The two most notable ones are the bass, performed yesterday by Rubén Amoretti, an excellent singer with a very beautiful and colorful powerful voice, and the tenor, who yesterday was Carlos Cardoso, also vocally well.

The 3 remaining soloists have short interventions. Yesterday the baritone was André Baleiro, the mezzo-soprano Cátia Moreso and the soprano Zarina Abaeva, a singer I really like (she interpreted the Requiem by Verdi in a sublime way) but who can't shine here. But everyone was good.

The Choir of the Teatro de São Carlos (conductor Giampaolo Vessella) also did well but was placed on several levels at the height of the theatre, each element was protected at the front (and perhaps also on the sides) with a plastic, acrylic or similar, which it impairs hearing a little.

The theater was almost empty, which is a shame. The performance deserved more audience and the public deserves quality performances like this one. But a little-known mass for the dead on Monday in the late afternoon, the pandemic and the bad opera performances of the recent past must all have contributed to such a dismal situation inside the room.

MARIA STUARDA, Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, Lisboa / Lisbon, Janeiro / January 2020

(review in English below)

A direcção musical esteve a cargo do maestro Fabrizio Maria Carminati.

Tu di un umile preghiera, quer no final Di un cor che more.

e a soprano Rita Marques (Anna Kennedy).

A luxurious Maria Stuarda at the Teatro São Carlos!

Maria Stuarda, by G Donizetti with libretto by Giuseppe Bardari is based on the play Maria Stuart by F. Schiller. The plot takes place in the historic period of the Tudor dynasty in England and is one of the three operas (Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda and Roberto Devereux) usually referred to as “the queens of Donizetti” for their primordial roles. The present is dominated by the confrontation between the two queens, Elisabetta and Maria Stuarda, culminating in the beheading of the latter.

Maria Stuarda is a romantic opera, where the composer musically characterizes the members of the plot and their dramas. (The composer's first great romantic opera, Anna Bolena, was written 4 years earlier, in 1830). It is musically undeniably beautiful, the result of the expression of all the conflicts between the main characters. It was censored for the way it represented the queens, namely for the outrageous expression as Maria Stuarda accuses Elisabetta (Figlia impura di Bolena parli tu di disonore? Unworthy, oscena meretrice, in te cade il mio rossone. Profanato is the soglio inglese, vil bastarda, das tui piè!) in the direct confrontation of the two queens (which never happened in real life), one of the most impactful components of opera.

For lovers of style, as is my case, it is a musical delight. It requires three singers of great quality and that's what happened.

But let's start with the direction by Andrea de Rosa, with scenography by Sergio Tramonti, beautiful costumes by Ursula Patzak and magnificent lights by Pasquale Mari. It is a production of the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome.
It is very classic, minimalist, very beautiful, with excellent costumes, good lights, the direction of the actors to privilege the singing and to always put the singers on stage. No exorbitances. Simple, direct, effective and very pleasant. As it should always be. Several parts are notable, namely the Fotheringay castle’s park where Maria Stuarda is imprisoned and the end of the opera with the executioner in the background. It is the proof that, with very few props, it is possible to make high quality productions.

The Choir of the Teatro National de São Carlos and the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra were very good. The musical direction was in charge of the maestro Fabrizio Maria Carminati.

Regarding the singers, a marvel! All excellent, young, fantastic voices and excellent actors.

Italian mezzo Alessandra Volpe was an impressive Elisabetta, always with good volume and projection, beautiful timbre, good presence, in an interpretation sometimes contained but very effective. The duets with Leicester and the confrontation with Stuart were remarkable.

Leonardo Cortellazzi was a great Leicester in both vocal and scenic interpretation. He is an excellent Italian tenor, with a strong presence, has a very beautiful timbre and his voice is always with good volume and in tune. Fantastic. The duet in 1st act with Elisabetta Era d'amor l'immagine was one of the most striking moments of the interpretation, but he was always at the highest level.

Maria Stuarda by Russian soprano Ekaterina Bakanova was fabulous. The singer has an excellent figure, thin and tall, somewhat fragile, but an impressive voice. Magnificent timbre, imposing projection, without stridency, remarkable top register and very emotional interpretation. She was soft and very lyrical in the opening when she recalls her freedom and happiness in France (Ah! Nebe che lieve per l'aria aggiri), moving when she asks Talbot to hear her in confession (Quando di luce rosea) and smaching in the famous aria Deh! Tu di um umile preghiera, and in the end Di un cor che more. A luxury!

In supproting roles, the quality of singing and stage performance did not clash, baritones Luís Rodrigues (Talbot) and Christian Luján (Cecil) were also great, as well as soprano Rita Marques (Anna Kennedy).

A magnificent opera performance, for me the best in many years at Teatro de São Carlos.
