RIGOLETTO de Giuseppe Verdi no Teatro Nacional de São Carlos — 5.05.2013

(Review in English bellow)

---------------
(Review in English)

The opera Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) was premiered in 1851 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. The libretto results of close collaboration between the composer and Italian librettist Francesco Maria Piave and is based on the play Le Roi s'amuse by French writer Victor Hugo written in 1832. The piece was targeted of French censorship and could not be present for decades, but has attracted Verdi who was looking for a story with striking and strong characters for his new commissioned opera. His choice was also targeted of Austrian censorship, at that time dominant potency in northern Italy. They considered the text of "a repugnant morality and obscene triviality." After several changes, the opera first entitled La Maledizione would be Rigoletto and its action would move into the realm of Mantua who belonged to the Gonzaga family, though extinct, which allowed not offending any susceptibility. Rigoletto’s reception was climactic and, since then, is one of Verdi's iconographic operas and one of the most represented throughout the world, having been, according to the site Operabase, 10th most represented opera worldwide between 2006 and 2010. It therefore has a special and highly meritorious place in the opera history!

The story takes place usually around the triangle Rigoletto (an humpbacked jester), the Duke of Mantua (aristocrat dangler) and Gilda (Rigoletto's daughter who was in love with the Duke), always with the tragic backdrop related to a curse laid by Monterone that will finally happen. You can read a detailed summary here.

The staging of Francesco Esposito was based, again, on metal structures that, with the customization of panels, were adapted to all the operas of Verdi’s trilogy of TNSC. This option is perceived very well given the available low budget. In the wake of modernization, which I'm an adept, Esposito put the action in the present times, without carry it, however, to one specific period. The first act begins with an orgiastic party with transvestites and orgiastic "bunnies" in the style of Playboy. The second scene of the first act is set in the empty hall until, carrying Rigoletto for the front of the stage, a soft black curtian down while the scenery is transformed behind it loudly. It is such loud that on Pari siamo Rigoletto is barely audible was very distraught. I still do not understand why Esposito insists on it: he had done it in Traviata and with very bad results. He chooses not to enact during a period and adds noise! In the second scene Rigoletto is a mechanic and he arrives on scooter. One option dubious: Rigoletto as a mechanic?! Then comes the candid Gilda in the middle of mechanics of bad aspect and barrels of oil ... The second act goes up again in the hall of the first act. But there is one very important detail that was bad: when Rigoletto sing the aria Cortigiani and addresses Marulo, Marulo deviates to the bottom of the stage, disappearing. Marulo and Rigoletto have a scene in which clearly implies a visual and even physical contact. All this is not perceived taking account Rigoletto’s despair and, of course, the libretto. Incidentally, the Rigoletto here is neither deformed nor have bad aspect. The third act has options more debatable. The metallic structures are naked, and on the various floors, street prostitutes sell themselves so lewd and dirty in exchange for some notes offered by mechanics. An option of very bad taste! And the sister of Sparafucile - Maddalena - has a stunning figure ... And much more in those costumes: a horror! The option to make rain with styrofoam balls was very cute and it worked well.

André Martin. He has undoubtedly an ego that fills the stage. He loves doing finales "a la grande" to receive enthusiastic applauses before the music ends... I think he may revise this posture in the future, and the same can be said to roars that he gives along the recitation: or Verdi included them exclusively in André’s score? ... And his direction has big faults: very frequent tempo disagreements with the singers. Here ahead them, there after them. He has a tremendous irregularity in time: the first act began with large pauses and then he accelerates in the end of first and final acts so as to remove any dramatic intensity. And the winds were very weak ... I did not like!

Piero Terranova. Rigoletto presented himself with a pleasant voice, tuned and regular throughout the recitation. The projection was not always the best but, although not delighting, he was convincing vocal and scenically.

Alessandro Liberatore. The Duke of Mantua was, among the leading singers, the one who had the most beautiful timbre and scenically was very well. But his projection was weak and often irregular. He was not extraordinary, but it was an effective Duke. Moreover, compared with Alfredo from La Traviata, anyone is a Pavarotti.

Romina Casucci. Gilda, of the three leading singers was the one who denoted more difficulties. Her voice is not beautiful, nor full, and has a technique not very accurate, which has been evident in her interpretation of the aria Caro nome. Moreover, even scenically was not very expressive. Anyway, she was far from perform to the level that the role requires.

Giovanni Furlanetto. Sparafucile was regular. The voice does not have much power, nor the projection is the best. But he has a deep bass.

Agostina Smimmero. Maddalena was interpreted by Italian mezzo which was Azucena in Il Trovatore. Today she was worse. Hardly she was heard. And her figure: I apologize, but when she tells the Duke that she is ugly she is absolutely right. A horror to see...

The supporting roles - as always! - went to the little Portugueses... (This is how they are treated in TNSC!). João Merino was a great Marulo: he is always very expressive vocal and scenically, with a great stage presence (he is really an actor!) and has a beautiful voice, well projected and always audible. Luís Rodrigues was Ceprano and was immaculate (in great style!). Mário Redondo was Monterone: he was good, although today with a harsh voice. But are Portuguese. I suggest they change their names. For example: Juan Merino, Louis Rodriguez and Mario Redondo. If so, I'm sure they were more respected!

But Rigoletto, of the three operas I attended, was the most regular in a very low quality level. Still, when there is low budgets and I think that TNSC should give priority to the nationals…
