MADAMA BUTTERFLY, Wiener Staatsoper, Novembro / November 2018

(review in English below)

MADAMA BUTTERFLY, Wiener Staatsoper, November 2018

Madama Butterfly is one of the Puccini operas I like best. It portrays perhaps the most unprotected and unjustly heroine of the composer, for whom the figure of the Woman was central in his works.
The direction of Josef Gielen is literal and classic, very pleasant to see. The only negative note was the age of the child, that should be 6 or 7 years old. Orchestra and Chorus (on stage and off stage) with excellent performances, under the command of maestro Jonathan Darlington.

Armenian spinto soprano Liana Haroutounian was an exceptional Cio-cio-san (Butterfly). The singer played the character in an irreproachable way. Very convincing on stage, she has a very powerful voice and she gave us a very emotional interpretation. She has always been tuned and the top notes were impressive and maintaining the high quality.

Pinkerton of the Romanian tenor Teodor Ilincai was also quite good, the voice has a very pleasant tone and the singer projects it with great effectiveness. He is young and  has a good figure for the role.

Sharpless of the Spanish baritone Gabriel Bermúdez was the weakest link of the night, with a small voice that, often, was drowned by the orchestra. He was also quite static on stage.

Suzuki by Russian mezzo Elena Maximova was another fabulous singer. She had a very powerful voice, beautiful timbre and an irreprehensible interpretation, scenic and vocal.

Of the secondary roles, Goro by Herwig Pecoraro was bizarre because the voice is not pleasant, Yamadori by Hans Peter Kammerer and Kate Pinkerton by Lydia Rathkolb were ok in their very small participations.

LA BOHÈME, Staatsoper Hamburg, Março / March de 2015

(review in English below)

Last March I attended a performance of La Bohème by G. Puccini in Hamburg State Opera. It was my debut in this opera house, perhaps the ugliest I've been until today.

For many years a new building is being constructed and, in Hamburg, when something takes ages, it is said that it is like the new opera ...

The staging by Guy Joosten and Johannes Leiacker brought the action to the present times. In the first act we see 9 lower middle class apartments, the central and most degraded is where the protagonists live. Mimi lives above them and when she asks for help to Rodolfo, she pretends to be more ill than what she is, to captivate him. The second act is set in a large strip tease bar and Musetta is the main striper. The singer has a great figure for the character and offers an interesting stage performance. In the 3rd act we have a brothel. In the final act, we are back at the initial appartments, now abandoned and vandalized, where only the 4 friends live as "homeless".

Regular readers of this blog know that I'm not fond of modern staging approaches, and the beginning of this one let me very displeased. However, I was being "conquered" and I finally recognize that it is an interesting and well effective staging, despite some minor inconsistencies.

Musical direction was by maestro Ivan Repusic who did a good job. The singers, all young and unknown to me, were a pleasant surprise.

Rodolfo was played by romanian tenor Teodor Ilincai. He had an unhappy start but quickly reached a very good level and kept it throughout the performance. The voice is powerful, virile, without breaking in the high register, although lacking some softness, especially in parts of greater intimacy.

Also romanian soprano Tatiana Lisnic was very expressive Mimi, especially in the vocal interpretation that was always at a high level. The voice is strong, well heard but sometimes a little harsh. In the 4th she did not not stand out as expected because the staging did not help.

Marcello was interpreted by turkisch Baritone Orhan Yildiz. The voice was beautiful but small. The stage performance was better than the vocal, but he did not disappoint.

French mezzo Solen Mainguené was a very sui generis Musetta. A stripper with a good figure and good staging performance but she also sang very well, especially the aria of the 2nd act.

Viktor Rud’s Scaunard was not impressive but Florian Spiess’ Colline offered an interesting performance. Frieder Stricker’s Benoit could hardly be heard, and Benjamin Popson’s Parpignol as well Stanislav Sergeev’s Alcindoro were banal.

A totally out of the conventional Bohème but, despite the chosen theme, an interesting performance.
