REQUIEM de Fauré; REQUIEM de Mozart, Fundação Gulbenkian, Abril 2017

 (text in English below)

A Fundação Gulbenkian abriu novamente a parte posterior do palco do Grande Auditório, permitindo usufruir do jardim e suas aves. Actuou a Orquestra e Coro Gulbenkian, sob a batuta do conceituado maestro Michel Corboz.

REQUIEM by Fauré; REQUIEM by Mozart, Gulbenkian Foundation, April 2017

Gulbenkian Foundation once again opened the back of the Grand Auditorium, allowing us to enjoy the garden and the birds. The performance was by the Gulbenkian Orchestra and Choir, directed the renowned conductor Michel Corboz.

In the first part of the concert the Requiem of Gabriel Fauré was heard, a work of intimate sonority with moments of great beauty, namely Pie Jesu, remarkable and superiorly interpreted by the soprano Sandrine Piau. The choir, of ethereal beauty, were excellent.

After the break it was Mozart's Requiem, for me one of the most touching musical works of Western music. Corboz began at a high pace, which breaks the impact and solemnity of the work, but then this impression faded. The soloists were homogeneous and of great quality, soprano Sandrine Piau, alto Helena Rasker, tenor Christophe Einhorn (a little inferior to his peers and he seemed to make a great effort to sing ... but the voice came out well) and bass Marcos Fink. The Choir was always at a star level, Lacrimosa was moving and the final rapturous. Jorge Matta, conductor of the Choir, has done a magnificent job.
Another great concert at Fundação Gulbenkian.

Fauré's Requiem and extras - Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation - 28th October 2010

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation offers us, this week, a trio of interesting works, including two choral ones, which is why we decided to include this concert on this blog.

The concerto for organ, timpani and string orchestra by Francis Poulenc is a striking work. It starts harshly and discordant, but the melodic lines develop into a soft, pleasant, sometimes valse-like, bucolic spirit. Yves Rechsteiner was secure in the organ, skilled in changing registers even using, near the end, a foot for this purpose.

I cannot say that Vivaldi is one of my favorite composers. His Gloria does not escape this feeling. It is not a landmark work of the Baroque. It lives of its first number, whose melody we can all easily identify. The rest is very vivaldi-like, of course, but unimaginative and unvibrant. The Gulbenkian Choir was perfect. Ana Quintans and particularly Lucia Duchonova, with their deep voices and clean and beautiful tone, matched to the performance of the Choir. I felt the Orchestra much more towards a Classic style. I had some difficulty in feeling the spirit of the Baroque in some passages.

The highlight of this concert was, without doubt, the Fauré’s Requiem. I believe that this work is perhaps the most heavenly of musical creations of all time. However, it occupies the 2nd place of my Requiem podium. After a slow solemn and powerful start (Introit and Kyrie), the work finds its best passages in the Sanctus, Pie Jesu, Agnus Dei and In Paradisum. Luís Rodrigues sang very well better than in the Libera me than in the Offertory, but the star was Ana Quintans. Her heavenly voice created a sublime and touching Pie Jesu. The Orchestra was superb under the direction of Rolf Beck and the Gulbenkian Choir was, once again, at the highest level.

To see again on the 29th of October at 7pm and to discover or hear again in two of the best available recordings.

Under the direction of John Eliot Gardiner...

Or with a cristal clear Bryn Terfel and a celestial Cecilia Bartoli...
