LA GAZZA LADRA, Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, Lisboa, Maio 2019

(review in English below)

LA GAZZA LADRA, Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, Lisbon, May 2019

The Teatro de São Carlos presented the opera La Gazza Ladra by Rossini. Unfortunately it was in concert version, so we could only hear it. It was a good show that was mainly due to the choice of the main performers. A number of good young foreign singers were brought along with Portuguese singers, mostly in less demanding roles.

Rossini is not for everyone, instrumentalists or singers and, with this tolerance in mind, we witnessed a good performance. The maestro was young Italian Sesto Quatrini who was well, with a good response from both the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra and the São Carlos Theater Choir.

The quality of the soloist singers was quite homogeneous and above what is usually offered to us, but some stood out for their superior quality. Ninetta was sung by Georgian soprano Sofia Mchedlishvili. Among the ladies she was by far the best. Shee has a high-pitched but pleasant voice, tuned and always well audible over the orchestra. She got away in th coloratura.

Gianetto was the Italian tenor Michele Angelini, a voice adequate to the rossinian interpretation, good projection and nice timbre. He was very good. Italian bass Mirco Palazzi interpreted superiorly the Magistrate. He has a bass voice always well tuned, very expressive and was, for me, the best of the night.

On a little lower quality level were Italian bass Ugo Guagliardo as Fernando, father of Ninetta, and Italian mezzo Paola Gardina, dark voice but sometimes not very audible, in the trousers role of Pippo.

The Portuguese soloists were mezzo Cátia Moreso who was as well as Lucia although at times she has touched the stridency, the excellent bass André Henriques as Ernesto and Pretor, the best of the nationals despite the small role, and the tenor Marco Alves dos Santos as Isacco and Antonio, always well as we are used to. More discreet were the baritones Luís Rodrigues as Fabrizio and João Merino as Giorgio. Ana Serro had a small but nice presence as the bird.

IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA de Rossini — Royal Opera House, Londres — Outubro 2014

(Text in English below)

(Text in English)

I attended the last recitation of Il Barbiere di spare Siviglia by G. Rossini. This is the very famous and beloved staging by Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier.

This scenario has already been commented on several occasions in 2009 (Fanatic One) and 2011 (Wagner Fanatic). It is an extremely colorful and very impressive staging that fully meets the idea of humorous and entertaining show that is intended and transports us to a world of fantasy. After viewing, it is difficult to stay indifferent to it and, above all, grumpy.

The cast for this replacement was mostly composed of singers in training in ROH.

The Count Almaviva was the tenor Michele Angelini that has a voice with a very nice timbre, good projection and safe technique. Interpretively he was convincing and played well scenically. I believe that, over time, may become an interesting tenor, while still having enough to grow.

The Figaro of the American baritone Lucas Meacham was of excellent quality: pontente voice , pleasant timbre, easy treble and abundant expressiveness combined with an excellent figure for the role he managed in his favor scenically.

The Dotor Bartolo by Alessandro Corbeli, the most renowned of the singers of this cast was good, but without delight me.

The Rosina Of Serena Malfi was of good quality. The voice has a lot of power and a very nice timbre. However, she was a little insecure what caused her to have some flaws, with the most notorious at the end of Una voce poco fa that broke out in the final o sì. She has a great stage presence, is comic and interacted well with the other characters. So, overall had a nice presentation and I am sure that if not fail, her Rosina could be of superior quality.

I particularly liked the voice of Wyn Pencarreg as Fiorello and Janis Kelly as Berta did well.

The ROH Orchestra under the direction of Sir Mark Elder offered us a fresh and exciting interpretation.

It was a recitation of good overall quality that amused and entertained enough and with a scenario that is worth seeing live.
