MESSA DA REQUIEM, Verdi, Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, Maio 2016 / May 2016

 (text in English below)

MESSA DA REQUIEM Verdi, Teatro São Carlos, May 2016

About a year ago I attended the worst interpretation of Verdi's Requiem in the unsuspected Gulbenkian Foundation, as reported here. This is one of my favorite works of the composer, for its unique musicality and overwhelming telluric force. The presentation at the Teatro de São Carlos, not transporting us to a desired transcendental dimension, was a far better performance that the experience of last year.

Italian maestro Gianpaolo Bisani, dressed in an unconventional way, was responsible for an effective direction. He showed the introspective feeling that the work is imbued. The Choir of the Teatro São Carlos, under the direction of Giovanni Andreoli was very good. The Portuguese Symphony Orchestra fulfilled.

Soprano Daniela Schillaci (replacing Rachele Stanisci) has a powerful voice, always over the choir and the orchestra, but with a tendency to shrillness, which was very evident in the early interventions. However, she improved in the second half, and the Agnus Dei, was irreproachable.
Enkelejda Shkosa, mezzo-soprano, was one of the best of the night. The voice is powerful, beautiful and very expressive. Liber scriptus was of great quality and she remained so until the end.
Tenor Massimiliano Pisapia fulfilled without clash.
Bass Nicola Ulivieri, with a beautiful voice timbre and always on tune, offered us an interpretation of high quality.
