LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN, Zürich Opernhaus

(Review in English below)

Zurich Opera live broadcasted the premiere of Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffmann on 11 April. The recording is available on the theater website (https://www.opernhaus.ch/en/) until the end of April.

Andreas Homoki's staging was very pleasant and effective. There were few visual props. Throughout the opera, a square pavement with good effect was maintained, a kite of wine and, in each act, a dominant adornment such as a sofa or a piano.

The Orchestra and the Choir were in another room, far from the theater and it was interesting to see the explanation of how everything worked.

It was a very pleasant performance, with the soloist singers with great performances.

Saimir Pirgu was Hoffmann and was at the highest level. I like this tenor very much, he never disappointed me and, once again, he was great.

Alexandra Kadurina, who I did not know, was an excellent Muse / Nicklausse, both in scenic and vocal interpretation.

Olympia was interpreted by Katrina Galka. Vocally, she was always in tune, she was powerful (although we know that, in the recordings, everything always sounds good) but she exaggerated in the coloratura. I didn't like the scenic performance, she was clearly a puppet but, for the most part of the performance, she didn't behave as such.

Ekaterina Bakanova was a fantastic Antonia in sensitive stage and vocal interpretation. The singer has a very beautiful timbre and this dramatic register adapts very well to her soprano.

Guilietta was interpreted correctly by Lauren Fagan.

The villain Lindorf / Coppélius / Miracle / Dapertutto was an excellent Andrew Foster-Williams who combined a convincing vocal interpretation with a good scenic performance, greatly aided by the dresses.

LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN, Zürich Opernhaus, Transmissão em directo / Live, 11 Abril /April 18h00 (Lisboa) / 19h00 (Zürich)

(text in English below)

Alexandra Kadurina será a Musa / Nicklausse.

RIGOLETTO - Royal Opera House, Londres — Outubro 2014

(Text in English below)

(orgia do Acto I)

(visão geral do cenário rotativo)

(Text in English)

I attended the last recitation of Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto with David McVicar production ROH premiered in 2001.

The McVicar scenario has already been commented on by Fanatic One in a 2012 recital.
I would say that the 1st act, transporting us to a complete orgy, distracts us overly music. If it is true that it was an orgiastic party, the fact that deliberately expose ourselves (and in several scene planes) to nudity and explicit heterosexual and homosexual sex at the same time can become uncomfortable for some spectators, which, in my view, is unnecessary. Moreover, the extras move on stage loud and hysterical screaming ... In any case, it is realistic.

Then, all the action takes place around a rotating inclined plane that allows make alive the remaining scenes, and it does so in a sublime way and with a very successful set of lights , that transmits very well the tension and the darkness of this opera. The wardrobe is extraordinary and the direction of actors  very effective. It is therefore an excellent staging.

Simon Kneelyside was Rigoletto. His stage presence was exceptional, embodying a rude , proud and vengeful hump. His voice has a wonderful tone for the role and excellent amplitude and projection, so it is easily listen in any room of the hall. His Cortigiani, vil razza dannata was excellent. Has an exemplary performance and is therefore a desirable Rigoletto in any opera hall.

Saimir Pirgu was the Duke of Mantua. He has a voice with a beautiful tone that projects well and easily modulates. He did it very well in the most famous arias as Ella mi fu rapita! or La donna e mobile. In addition, his good figure and young age make him one of the most convincing Dukes of today.

Aleksandra Kurzak was Gilda. She has a great voice of a crystalline clarity, good projection and is technically secure, Kurzak did shine as Gilda and made levitate the Verdi notes. It can only pointed minimal flaws namely a minimal and very well disguised fault in one of the highest notes of her Gualtier Malde! But she was sublime throughout the recital and the final in the last act was creepy.

Also noteworthy was the Maddalena by Justina Gringyte who was in good voice and scenic plan and, above all, to Sparafucile by Brinkley Sherratt who had a very high level of performance.

The orchestra ROH was very well led by Paul Griffiths, not clashing minimally the high level of recitation and the ROH Choir has also performed well.

It was indeed a memorable recital with top quality at one of the best and most beautiful places to see opera: Royal Opera House in London.

SAIMIR PIRGU, encontro em Zurique / meeting in Zürich

 (text in english below)

 Obrigado Saimir Pingu!

Saimir Pirgu, meeting in Zurich

On my most recent trip to Zurich, where I attended three extraordinary operas in a cold weekend in February I was, once again, contemplated by luck. I met, unexpectedly, one of the best tenors of present times , the young Albanian Saimir Pirgu, who sang superbly the Duke in Rigoletto.

The cost of living in Switzerland is almost prohibitive and hotels are no exception. I chose one of the "least expensive" near the Opera House. The day after the performance of Rigoletto, during breakfast at the hotel, sitting next to me was a young man who looked familiar. I told my wife that he seemed to be the Duke of Mantua from Rigoletto. She agreed but we both thought that this kind of hotel would not be chosen by an artist of that caliber. But we were wrong!

I ran to the bedroom to fetch the opera program and the camera. Filled with courage I asked him if he was Saimir Pirgu. He smiled and confirmed. I told him that we were Portuguese, and that we were very impressed by his performance of the day before. .

He rminded us that he had been in Lisbon twice to sing Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte in 2006 and the Duke of Rigoletto in 2007. I attended the two operas and remember how well impressed I was at the time.

.When or if  he will return to Lisbon, he does not know…

Saimir Pirgu revealed a huge sympathy and simplicity and agreed to be photographed with us immediately. He even asked the employee of the hotel to take a picture of us but, unfortunately, the lady did it in the most awkward way because she could, with a fully automatic camera, take a totally blurred picture. At least the picture I took of my wife with Pirgu was ok and will be the testimony for posterity (I shown here the half that matters), recalling an unforgettable operatic weekend, with this unexpected bonus .

Thank you Saimir Pingu!

RIGOLETTO, Opera de Zurique, Fevereiro de 2014 / Zurich Opernhaus, February 2014

(review in english below)

Rigoletto Zurich Opera, February 2014

Again I had the opportunity to see Verdi's Rigoletto during a recent trip to Switzerland From the three operas I attended in Zurich, this was the one in which I had less interest. I saw it just because it was on at the time. I could not anticipate the surprise I would have.

It was a Volksvorstellung, a performance with prices far below the usual but with the cast identical to the " normal " performances..

The staging by Tatjana Gürbaca was ridiculous. From start to finish the stage had in the center a large rectangular table covered with a white cloth and surrounded by chairs. All the action happened around, over, or under the table and chairs, with the singers in current informal costumes. Rigoletto was not hunchback, the Duke appears initially in shorts and tennis shoes, and all others dressed similarly. I think it is not necessary to describe anything else

Musical direction of conductor Stefan Blunier has not been free of small flaws but, on the whole, it was good.

Truly sensational was the quality of all singers! This was perhaps the best Rigoletto I've heard live, and this is an opera that I have already seen many many times.

As my companion said, with this interpretive level, we even do not notice what is happening on stage. I do not fully share her view but, this night, I confess I also felt that.

Rigoletto was sung by the Polish baritone Andrzej Dobber  He has a very expressive, emotive and with an overwhelming powerful and beautiful voice. It's a role in which I had already heard him, but in this performance I found his interpretation superlative.

Albanian tenor Saimir Pirgu that I finally could hear live after the two operas he sung in Lisbon several years ago, was the best Duke I've seen in recent times. Has an excellent stage presence, the voice is strong and of an unusual beauty, the top notes are easy, bright and seemingly effortless issued .

Gilda was interpreted by Russian soprano Olesya Golovneva a last minute replacement. The singer has a thin, small, frail figure, looks like a 15 year old adolescent, but her voice is overwhelming. She sings fabulously in all registers, must have been hear even outside the theatre and yet, whenever necessary, she was of a touching softness.

Italian bass Andrea Mastroni was Sparafucile, with a booming voice “to shake the ground” and with an unusually pleasant timbre.

Another voice of much higher quality than usual was Ukrainian baritone´s Valery Murga as Count Monterone.

Swiss mezzo Judith Schmid was Maddalena, vocally the less spectacular but still very good.

A final word of appreciation for the good performances of the other singers, Julia Riley as Giovanna, Cheyne Davidson as Marullo, Yuriy Tsiple as Count Ceprano, and Deanna Breiwick as Countess Ceprano .

A deplorable staging but luxury Rigoletto at the Zurich Opera, to see eyes wide shut!
