OTELLO, Royal Opera House, Julho / July 2022

(review in English below)

As próprias personagens principais têm colocações bizarras e frequentemente infelizes no palco.

OTELLO, Royal Opera House, July  2022

I attended the dress rehearsal of G Verdi's Otello at the Royal Opera House. An interesting but rare initiative in which, for a very nice price, the entire opera is staged, the only difference is in the orchestra, in which the musicians are dressed “normally”.

This staging by Keith Warner has already been commented on more than once on the blog. It's too dark, uninteresting, empty and ineffective. It makes the contrast between the black (Otello) who dominates in most of the opera, and the white (Desdemona) who is more evident in the last scene, in the room where she is murdered, but it doesn't work. The main characters themselves have bizarre and often unfortunate placements on stage.

Conductor Daniele Rustioni performed effectively and the orchestra did well. Also very well was the choir, which has outstanding participation in the opera.

Otello was sung by tenor Russell Thomas. He was very good, but not exceptional. He has an interesting voice, with a firm and remarkable middle register, but sometimes he let himself be drowned out when the orchestra was playing higher. The scenic interpretation was good, although somewhat static.

Soprano Harchuhí Bassénz was a dazzling Desdemona. Impressive voice, of high power and beauty, and perfect technique. Also in the scenic performance she was very credible. Fantastic

Christopher Maltman's Iago did well on stage, but what impressed me the most was his vocal quality. Big voice, always in tune and nice timbre. One of the best I've heard in this role.

Piotr Buszewski played Cassio with a small voice but with a pleasant timbre. In this opera, more vocal power is required, even in smaller roles like this.

Another notable singer was Monika-Evelin Liiv who played Emilia with great dignity and quality.

NABUCCO – MetLive in HD.

NABUCCO – MetLive in HD, January 2017

A few notes on the transmission of G. Verdi's opera Nabucco that we were able to see last Saturday, in a delayed broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera of New York.

Elijah Moshinsky's short-lived direction is a few years old. The stage swirls among a rocky setting when it shows the Hebrews and a darker and topped by a golden god for the Babylonians. Although grandiose, it is not an interesting approach.

Under the direction of James Levine the Orchestra and Choir of the Metropolitan Opera were excellent. We heard twice the opening chorus of the 4th act - Va, pensiero.

Russian bass Dmitri Belosselskiy was an interesting Zaccaria but weak in the lower registrer, almost nonexistent. American tenor Russell Thomas sang the small role of Ismaele with quality, but apparently in effort. Jamie Barton was much better as Fenena, also in a small role but particularly well sung, notably in the 4th act. Abigaille, the main character of the opera, was interpreted by Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska. The singer is a vocal portent, in strength, amplitude and tuning, and the top notes are excellent. However, she lacks theatrical presence and some vocal sweetness. The interpretation is always hard, in the old style of the singers of eastern Europe.

I leave to the end the great Placido Domingo, on his way to his 80s, one of the greatest names of the Opera of the last decades. I have great respect for him and in this performance, in the role of Nabucco, he was the only one of the soloists who interpreted the character, not limited to singing. But in another interpretation of baritone, he did not sound as it would be desirable because Domingo is a tenor, and in these interpretations, without top notes.
