RIGOLETTO, METropolitan Opera, Dezembro / December 2022

(review in English below)

RIGOLETTO, MEtropolitan Opera, December 2022

Bartlett Sher's performance of Verdi's opera Rigoletto was again performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

The action takes place in Germany, in the Republic of Weimar, but it is a classic, showy staging and where the main components of the opera are present and represented in a very perceptible way.

Speranza Scappucci's musical direction was not up to the performance. There were several disagreements between the orchestra and the singers and the imposed rhythms were not always the most suitable for the action. It was a pity because the Orchestra and the Chorus were grate.

This time something rare happened in opera, all the soloists were excellent!

French tenor Benjamin Bernheim was a fabulous Duke. He has a wide, fresh voice, very beautiful timbre, impressive power and great musicality. And on stage he was a real actor, the young and thin figure helps a lot.

The Italian soprano Rosa Feola made a perfect Gilda. Voice always audible over the orchestra, in tune, beautiful and expressive. On stage she was also perfect.

The American baritone Quinn Kelsey was a Rigoletto like I haven't seen live in a long time. It's a difficult role, nowadays there are few singers who sing and represent it correctly and Kelsey is one of them. He was fantastic.

They also deserve mention for their excellent performances Bradley Garvin as Monterone, the fantastic John Relyea as Sparafucile, and the stunning Aigul Akhmetshina as Maddalena.

A fabulous performance.

RIGOLETTO, Royal Opera House, Março 2022

(text in English below)

RIGOLETTO Royal Opera House, March 2022

As has been the custom in the great concert halls, at the beginning the anthem of Ukraine was played, in solidarity with the genocide that the country is suffering.

Then began Rigoletto by G. Verdi. Oliver Mears' staging begins with a figuration inspired by Caravaggio's “Martyrdom of St. Matthew”, a beautiful visual effect, but the staging was static, somewhat minimalist and not very innovative.

Baritone Luca Salsi's Rigoletto was extraordinary. He is a good verdian baritone, a species almost extinct these days. He was very well on stage, his voice is magnificent, wide, powerful and very expressive.

Also at the highest level was soprano Rosa Feola. She was always in tune, beautiful timbre, full voice and great expressiveness on stage.

Tenor Francesco Demuro was disappointing. The voice is small, has an excessively high timbre, which I don't like, and sings more in effort than in softness.

Also notable were bass Evgeny Stavinsky as Sparafucile and mezzo Aigul Akhmetshina as Maddalena. The support singers did not destroy,
Phillip Rhodes (Monterone), Kseniia Nikolaieva (Giovanna) and German Alcantara (Marullo).

Despite the tenor, it was a performance of great quality.

RIGOLETTO, Opera Bastille, Paris, November 2021

Review by Francisco Casegas

I had the opportunity on the 4th of November to watch one of my favorite operas, Rigoletto by Verdi at the Opéra Bastille in Paris.

The orchestra of the Opera National de Paris was conducted by Giacomo Sagripanti consistently, always in tune with the singers.

Although the number of interventions by the choir is not very high in this opera, the choir of the Opéra National de Paris was at a very good level in its interventions.

Regarding the production, I confess that I wasn't a big fan. The setting consists of a large cardboard box whose faces open and close as the scenes develop. Overall it tended to be boring in my opinion.

In the role of Rigolleto was the baritone Ludovic Tézier. He is a singer that I really appreciate and that in this recital he was at the highest level. Endowed with a powerful vocal apparatus, he was impeccable, vocally and scenically, always in tune with his Gilda.

In the role of Gilda was soprano Nadine Sierra. As mentioned in this blog, she is not a singer with a huge volume, but technically she is extraordinary and in this recital she was also impeccable.

In the role of Duke of Mantova was tenor Dmitry Korchak. He started with a “Questa O’ Quella” somewhat faded, but then it took off for a very solid performance during the rest of the recital.

In the remaining roles the singers were also at a good level. I would perhaps highlight Justina Gringyté as Maddalena, who has a highly beautiful timbre.

In general, it was a high level performance from which I left extremely satisfied as well as the rest of the audience who strongly applauded the artists, after leaving my last 2 performances “outside the country” disappointed (Tosca in Zurich and Faust in London).

A word of appreciation also to the room attendants who, in the moments prior to the beginning of the recital, were careful to address the people who had tickets on the sides in the back of the audience (as was my case) to advance to seats in the front that were free if they so wished. I took advantage of the invitation and ended up watching the performance in a fantastic seat in the audience.

RIGOLETTO, Teatro Alla Scala, Milão, Setembro / September 2019

Maestro – Daniel Oren
Encenação – Gilberto Delfo

Rigoletto – Leo Nucci
Gilda – Francesca Manzo
Il Duca di Mantova – Rodrigo Porras Garulo
Sparafucile – Toni Nezic
Maddalena – Daria Cherniy
Giovanna – Valeria Girardello
Monterone – Maharram Huseynov
Marullo – Ramiro Maturana

O público também me pareceu pastelão...

The staging is "chronicle" of Scala. It is the most classic one can have but for that reason it is a bit boring. The only thing better is Rigoletto´s dresses and the fact that it really rains on stage in Act 3. Otherwise it is a little monotonous.

It wasn't bad but ... he didn't do the encore. This is Nucci with some young Scala Academy singers. Not bad but it seems that something is lacking ... voices with beautiful timbre, impress more with the expressiveness with which they sing and move on stage, but it is noted that they still need to mature. Or it's my prejudice for youth. Sparafucile has an excellent voice for the role but is very young, it seems that the body and the voice are from two different people :). Next Monday the cast changes except Nucci. Nucci is unstoppable at all levels. I think there was not an encore more because of her than for him. The audience also seemed to me slow...

And they sang far back on stage which also didn't help in projecting the young voices. Maybe I'm exaggerating to the "bad" but I felt it was Nucci and the "kids" ... And that his top level he needs other top singers with him, like in the recent Traviata in Arena di Verona, for example. A Grigolo and an Oropesa here had given a worthy performance.

RIGOLETTO, Staatsoper Berlin, July 2019

I also watched Verdi's Rigoletto. The orchestra was directed by Andrés Orozco-Estrada and was at a very high level, in addition to having had an excellent respect for the singers.
The new production of this Rigoletto was in charge of Bartlett Sher: what staging! Classical, simple, fluent and fluid. It has everything to be a reference in the work and for many years. And it was the best staging I have seen of this opera until today. Also the choir performed at a great level.
The big star of the night was Nadine Sierra: she does not have a huge volume, but has an excellent technique and was vocally perfect. We heard a divine Caro nome! Associated with the singing, a very charismatic scenic presence and a figure more than adequate to the role. She is, without doubt, a young woman to emerge and with a great future.
The Duca by Michael Fabiano was a disgrace: he has no top notes (he well strives to disguise the undisguised) and has bad presence, but he gives the look of a star. Of course, in the end, he was not satisfied with the total lack of enthusiasm of the public that reacted very coldly to his appearance to the applause. Luckly, not to spoil the recital, was that I heard another voice in the role inside my head and imagined him there.
Who surprised me the most was Christopher Maltmann as Rigoletto: the voice has an enormous power and, without achieving the brilliance of Nucci, was a convincingly enigmatic Rigoletto and vocally very competent, so he offered a great performance.
Jan Martinik's Sparafucile as well as Elena Maximova's Maddalena did quite well in their small roles, though I did not particularly like the timbres.
It was a very good performance, right from the beautiful staging and the performance of Nadine Sierra.
