I DUE FOSCARI, Teatro Regio di Parma, Outubro 2019

(review in English below)

Falta-lhe isto... falta(-lhe) Nucci...

Orquestra Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini excelente, sob a direcção do maestro Paolo Arrivabeni

Viva Verdi!!! (e isto vindo de um Wagneriano... a entranhar-se a pouco e pouco, o “Bussetiano”...).

Excellent performance! Alongside Luisa Miller, I due Foscari is one of my 2018 Verdean discoveries and today was the first time live. It really is a powerful work, few times on stage I don't know why.

For me, the great star of the night was Stefan Pop as Jacopo Foscari. I know him well, although I have only seen him as Nemorino at the ROH a few years ago and was Duke in Rigoletto here in Parma last year. The top register occasionally loses his beauty of tone perhaps because he touches the boundary of the texture, or perhaps the technique, but aside from that, today was of a top quality, especially for those who are debuting the role. The role fits him like a glove and the scenic interpretation and the emotional nuances in the voice were excellent.

Maria Katzarava was also at the highest level as Lucrezia Contarini, with a very beautiful voice, emotionally plastic, great technique and high-pitched top register in an extremely demanding role for the soprano. I searched for her images on the net and what happened to this woman?! Pop is fat, and always has been, but even here he disguises well ... She doesn't. Maybe from theis came some of the boos at the end.

Giacomo Prestia is an Italian bass with the great vocal consistency that is known and fulfilled the role of Jacopo Loredano very well.

Vladimir Stoyanov was another live debut for me. Good impression of many youtube videos and the few recordings available. He has not disappointed as Francesco Foscari. Well ... not completely ... He defended himself a little at first but growing up to a high vocal and interpretive final level. He, too, making his debut on the role lacks some maturation but promises. He still has to do everything even more like the last 2 minutes, get out of the square clutches of musical writing and make it even more natural. He has the years (50s) left for the role to go even better because being old is hard. Characterization helps but you cannot make up your voice. Missing you ... Missing you Nucci ...

Excellent Arturo Toscanini Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of maestro Paolo Arrivabeni. Production by Leo Muscato, simple but pleasant and effective in supporting the action. Long live Verdi !!! (And this coming from a Wagnerian ... gradually becoming entrenched, the "Bussetian" ...).

I due Foscari de Giuseppe Verdi — Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelona, 3 de Maio de 2015

(Review in English below)

Assisti ontem à sexta ópera do reportório do grande compositor italiano Giuseppe Verdi.

A potência vocal é impressionante.

(Review in English)

I attended yesterday the sixth opera of the great Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi.

I due Foscari is an opera in three acts with libretto by Francesco Maria Piave based on the play The Two Foscari of Lord Byron. It was premiered in Rome in 1844 and met some success. It was revived in the 70s and 80s and again by Plácido Domingo in his path to get baritone roles repertoire.

It is a musically already very verdian opera, with an intense dramatic sense and a massive psychological characterization of the characters. Deals with honor and nobility of character, hatred and loyalty, fraternal and conjugal love, patriotic duty, intrigue and, politically, the desire for equality of men before the law. It is, therefore, an opera with all the components of a good story - and it is, in fact - and a tragic musical dimension that makes it essential to know.

I attended the concert version of this opera in the beautiful room of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

The orchestra was conducted by Massimo Zanetti who promoted a lively and intense interpretation, exploring the Orchestra Simfònica who was in an excellent level. Also the Cor del Gran Teatre del Liceu performed at a good level, even though this is not one of the operas that Verdi did more to make chorus character shine.

The Venezuelan tenor Aquiles Machado was Jacobo Foscari, Dux's son that is sentenced to exile for an alleged murder which was found not to have committed. He has a potent and balanced voice with remarkable expressive capacity. He did well in the cavatina Dal più remoto esilio. However, he was the one that shone the less of the main trio of singers. I confess that I was too focused on the José Carreras’s interpretation that is to all extent remarkable in the recording (that I recommend) of 1977 for Philips.

Francesco Foscari, Dux of Venice and father of the sentenced Jacopo, was the tenor/baritone Plácido Domingo. His desire to stay alive in the lyrical world at his 74 years of age is something remarkable. It can be said that he has not a baritone tone. And it is truth. But his voice is unique: vivid, expressive, intensely dramatic and with a capacity to reach the public that are unique and are untouched, so he offered us an interpretation of very high dramatic quality. He showed why he is a living legend of the operatic world. The Liceu, as might be expected, welcomed him with all the immense affection he deserves, particularly after his final aria Questa è l'dunque iniquia mercede. Bravo Maestro!

But the best voice of the evening was the Russian soprano Liudmyla Monastryska as Lucrezia Contarini, the desperate wife of Jacopo. The vocal power is impressive. She entered her first cavatina Tal al cui sguardo omnipossente making public timpani membrane to vibrate. The voice is clear, powerful and melodic, with a very pleasant timbre. Her large tessitura is very well used and without any loss of quality in any register and without any recourse to shrillness. She was perfect in all interventions and her duet with Domingo at the end of the 1st act Tu pur lo sai, che giudice was superb. Bravissima! Stunning performance!

The remaining elements in their less relevant roles showed quality, including the soprano Maria Mirò (Pisana), bass Raymond Aceto (Loredano), the tenor Josep Fado (Barbarigo), tenor Joan Prados (Fante del Consiglio) and bass Xavier Comorera (servant of the Dux).

Great show: those who will remain in our memory!
