COSÌ FAN TUTTE – Teatro Nacional de São Carlos – 14 de Janeiro 2012

(review in english below)

A voz do americano é lírica e cristalina.

In a year when economic difficulties led to the amputation of the season of the only opera house in the country, the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos responds with a magnificent production of Così fan tutte.

The staging by Guy Joosten is simple but brilliant. All the action takes place in a hotel lobby, with a decor that clearly invites us to enter, with the revolving door where the classic symbol of the VISA network is not missing, and a reception desk which works as a bar as well. A staircase gives access to the rooms. Outside, neon lights write H-O-T-E-L. The interval brings a change in the set that once again in its simplicity, contains a concordant symbolism with the plot of the opera.

But a simple scenario can only work if you count with on one thing: actors and singers who are able, in this single space, to offer a dynamic action that captures our attention and makes us live through them. This production of the São Carlos has it all and so... it has everything.

Contrary to what I have done with other productions in which I humbly try to comment according to my personal opinion, I cannot highligh this or that singer because they were all fantastic and in a such quality that practically functioned as a whole. And it is this way the opera reaches its dimensions of excellence.

In the female voices Carmen Romeu was Fiordilidgi, Luisa Francesconi was Dorabella and Eduarda Melo was Despina. They were simply brilliant, with a beautiful vocal timbre, superb actresses to the smallest detail. Eduarda Melo, in a role that gives extra room for body comedy, especially when impersonating the doctor and the notary, was exciting.

In the male voices, Shawn Mathey was Ferrando, João Merino was Guglielmo and Jorge Vaz de Carvalho was Don Alfonso. The american singer’s voice is lyrical and crystal clear. João Merino sweeps through with a powerful and expressive voice. Jorge Vaz de Carvalho, with the ideal age for the role and the tone that we all know, gives us a just perfect Don Alfonso.

The Orchestra, under the direction of a young and alive Erik Nielsen, was at its highest level, without faults, letting us feel the passion and joy with which they play Mozart.

I could not resist and have booked for two more nights...

If this is the swan song of the São Carlos this season, the swan dies standing, honoring Mozart, music and those who see the Opera as more than a passion ... Life.

Johan Botha – o melhor Tannhäuser no activo

(text in English below)

Johan Botha - the best Tannhäuser of present times

In Lisbon there is a rare opportunity to hear live on Sunday the best singer of Tannhäuser of present times. Richard Wagner’s opera Tannhäuser will be performed again, in concert version, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, with an all-star cast.

The soloist is South African tenor Johan Botha.  I've had the privilege of seeing him several times, as here. I consider him the best performer of this role among the singers currently interpreting Tannhäuser. Botha is a real heldentenor, his timbre is of unusual beauty, the vocal power is stunning and he maintains the quality and melodic pitch throughout the vast extent of his voice. He is always heard over the orchestra. I only did not understand why he was always looking at the score. I am sure he knows well the role because he has sung it many times.
It's a unique opportunity to watch his performances and I strongly recommend a visit to the Gulbenkian Foundation to enjoy it.

Botha was accompanied by other soloists of excellent quality. German soprano Manuela Uhl was an excellent Venus, with a beautiful melodic voice that filled the room. German soprano Melanie Diener had an exquisite vocal interpretation. German bass Falk Struckmann was exceptional both in potency as in the beauty of timbre that in the low register was unsurpassed. The Gulbenkian Choir had another fantastic interpretation, at the same level of those of recent times.

But not all was perfect. French conductor Bertrand de Billy is not a wagnerian and his performance was not good, the Gulbenkian Orchestra started badly, although it improved a lot from the 2nd act on, but never "took off".

Among the Portuguese singers, bass Nuno Dias, bass Luis Rodrigues and soprano Ana Maria Pinto sung well their short roles, but baritone Job Arantes Tomé, singing the important role of Wolfram, despite the laudable efforts he made, showed weak vocal power and his lower register was inaudible.

But it is a concert of great quality and a rare opportunity to hear one of the best wagnerian tenors of the present times.

LA TRAVIATA – Royal Opera House – 20 de Dezembro 2011

(review in english below)

The night of December 20, 2011 became one of the best operatic experiences I have ever had, with La Traviata at the Royal Opera House.

The staging by Richard Eyre has already been immortalized in DVD twice, first with Angela Gheorghiu and later by Renee Fleming. It is very classical and full of good taste.

The principal singers trio was terrific!

Ailyn Perez is a young singer but she already understands the dramatic deepness of the character of Violetta. She sings with a beautiful voice, perfect pitch, a voice with a soul, she conveyed the role in a superb moving way.

Piotr Beczala is one of the best tenors nowadays and he was in a stratospheric level. A highly potent voice, not loosing his beauty with the strength, superb high notes, and enviable acting qualities.

Simon Keenlyside was a perfect Giorgio Germont. Excellent characterization, a baritone voice that you just want to keep on listening even when the melodic line is over. His "Di Provenza il mar, il suol" was absolutelly stunning.

The Orchestra was superb under the baton of Patrick Lange.

No flaws, the stars where obviously aligned over Covent Garden on this night.

URI CAINE - Wagner e Veneza - Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation - January 8, 2012

Uri Caine brought us, yesterday, his view of the classical orchestral excerpts from Wagner operas with short interludes (and a final extra) of some of his other creations mainly based in Mahler and on the traditional English rhyme "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star."

The ensemble, consisting of a string quartet, accordion, and Uri, of course, at the piano concerto offered us a warm and deep sensible concert, with a special sonority, with highlight in the potential of the accordion. Without great inventions around the music of Wagner, maintaining an original environment, the result was impressive in anything embarrassing to the most puritanical of listeners.

Wagner's music was uplifted in his genius, deeply enterinf ou body through every pore, muscle or nerve.

If I had to pick one more magical moment, I would choose the prelude of the opera Lohengrin.

The genius of Wagner + the genious of Uri Caine = something "unclassifiedly" ... excellent!

LISZT by ARTUR PIZARRO - Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation - January 5, 2012

Just a short note to highlight the brilliance of Artur Pizarro in the last thursday (and probably on the same level yesterday), playing both the Liszt Piano Concertos and two transcripts of the work of Wagner by the same composer, notably the ouverture of the opera Tannhauser and the song of Wolfram from the 3rd act of the same opera "O du mein holder Abendstern."

One more proof that there are great musicians in Portugal.

For those who could not be in this concert and do not know the works, I leave my commercial recordings recommendation (one of them, unfortunately, hard to get in first hand).

LA CLEMENZA DI TITO – Ópera de Paris (Palácio Garnier), Outubro de 2011

(text in english below)

LA CLEMENZA DI TITO - Paris Opera (Palais Garnier), October 2011

La Clemenza di Tito, Mozart's opera before the last one, with libretto by Caterino Tommaso Mazzolà
, after Pietro Metastasio, was commissioned to the composer to be represented in Prague in September 1791 in the coronation ceremonies of the Austrian Emperor Leopold II as king of Bohemia. It is an opera seria  with many arias and duets, though short, where female's voices dominate.
The occasion demanded a representation of an exemplary royal behavior of universal value. Set in classical Rome, the opera portrays the behavior of the magnanimous Emperor Titus.
It is said that Mozart wrote the score in 18 days, and that had the collaboration in the recitatives and arias of his pupil Franz Süssmayr, who would complete his Requiem.

The plot is "sui generis", as Titus, the Emperor, considers marrying three different women on the same day. Tito should marry Vitellia but falls in love with a Jewish princess, Berenice, and decides to marry her. Vitellia asks Sesto, her lover, to kill the emperor. However Tito decides to ban the Jewish princess and marry Servilia, Sesto's sister, but she loves Annio. On being informed of this by Vitellia, Titus chooses to marry her. Vitellia, ignoring this choice, orders Sesto to set fire to Rome and to kill the emperor. Sesto informs her that he killed Titus and the people mourn the death of their emperor. When they realize that the emperor was not killed, Sesto confesses his crime and, despite being encouraged by Vitellia to escape, is arrested for treason. Titus, after signing his death sentence, forgives him. Vitellia confesses that she was involved in the conspiracy. Titus, magnanimous, forgives them all.

Unlike the Bastille, the Palais Garnier, in addition to its great beauty,  with wonderful paintings of Marc Chagall added later to the ceiling, is a large theater but "fair" for an opera house, where singers can display their voices in order to be fully appreciated by the public.

The National Orchestra of the Opera of Paris was superbly directed by Hungarian conductor Adam Fischer. A delight! The Choir of the Opera National de Paris had a great performance, especially at the end of the first act, when singing behind stage as soloists mourn the death of Tito.

The staging by Willy Decker is a masterpiece! It starts with a huge block of marble in the center of the stage, which will be shaped over the performance to end in a large bust of Tito. The idea is fabulous and of splendid scenic effect. All the action happens around this statue.

In this version, male figures were played by a bass, a tenor and two mezzos. There were no counter-tenors.

Emperor Titus was sung by German tenor Klaus Florian Vogt. Again I had the pleasure of enjoying his magnificent, clear and pure voice. It is suited to the role he plays, although his italian sounded sometimes a little strange. The high number of recitatives turned it more evident.

Russian soprano Hibla Gerzmava was an overwhelming Vitellia and she did justice to the music that Mozart wrote. The timbre is of considerable beauty, the top notes were easy and the power of the voice is overwhelming. She was able to transmit evel in her voice whenever necessary, complicity in Sesto and, ultimately, regret. She was truly fabulous.

French mezzo-soprano Stéphanie D'Oustrac was an extraordinary Sesto. The voice is beautiful, always in tune both in medium and low registers. The role is very large and demanding and the singer has always maintained the quality of interpretation at their peak throughout the performance.
It was another unique performance.

Amel Brahim-Djelloul, Algerian soprano was a very pleasant Servilia, with a fresh young voice, always well heard. Artistically she was very credible.

Allyson McHardy, Canadian mezzo-soprano, was an Annio with a quality similar to the remaining soloists. Therpart is smaller, but she interpreted it with class.

Publio was played by Romanian bass Balint Szabo. He was the less strong voice among all, but by no means of poor quality. He sang well, though without an overwhelming power or a very strong bottom register. But he was always audible and was well on the role.

At the end there was a long and well-deserved standing ovation, with that French habit of the rhythmic clapping of hands as a sign of appreciation.

An absolutely wonderful performance!

Convite para participação / Call for reviews

(text in English below)

One of the main objectives of the blog "Fanáticos da Ópera / Opera Fanatics" is the review of opera performances seen throughout the season.

Some readers have reported, in comments to various performances, their impressions of operas that they had the opportunity to see, as was the case of Gus with Fidelio and Die Soldaten.

It was with satisfaction that, some time ago and for the first time, we were contacted by a reader (unknown to us) expressing his wish that a review of an opera that he would see soon could be posted in this blog.

On May 24th 2011, for the first time, we published a review written by one of our readers. He was Eduardo Vieira and, written by him, we posted  reviews on Tosca in Paris in May, Don Giovanni in Vienna in May,  Nabuco in Rio de Janeiro in August, and Die Walküre in São Paulo in December. His reviews were very popular among our readers, what we could assess by the high number of "readings" of his posts, as well as by the comments written.

I highlight the first text on an opera in Brazil and the excellent description of the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro and its history.

After Eduardo Vieira, we received further requests for posting reviews of operas which have been seen in Brasil. From Ali Hassan Hayache we publishde reviews on Menino Peralta – Lénfant et les Sortilèges in São Paulo in October, Il Guarany dos Pampas Gaúchos in São Paulo in October, and Die Walküre in São Paulo in November.

Therefore,we invite our readers that attended or will attend an opera performance and would like to see their review posted in the blog “Fanáticos da Ópera / Opera Fanatics” to send the text, if possible with photos, to one of the following e-mails: fanaticoum@gmail.com or wagnerfanatic@gmail.com .

We think this will be a way to enrich information, share experiences and promote healthy discussion on topics that we very much like.

We take thus opportunity to wish a Happy New Year to all!
