A FLAUTA MÁGICA / DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, METropolitan Opera, Outubro / October 2017

A Flauta Mágica de W A Mozart esteve novamente em cena na METropolitan Opera de Nova Iorque.

A encenação de Julie Taymor é de grande impacto visual, apesar de não ser bonita. Está recheada de símbolos maçónicos e há uma grande diversidade de criaturas fantásticas ao longo do espectáculo, durante todo o percurso iniciático do Tamino.

As três Damas ao serviço da Rainha da Noite aparecem cada uma com uma grande máscara na mão, o que permite um efeito espectacular. 

O Papageno surge vestido convencionalmente, como apanhador de pássaros. O Tamino e a Pamina também aparecem em trajos vistosos mas os mais espectaculares são o Sarastro, a Rainha da Noite e o Monostatos. Os cenários mudam frequentemente e o ambiente místico mantém-se em toda a ópera.

Dirigiu a excelente Orquestra do Met o maestro emérito James Levine.

O tenor norte americano Charles Castronovo foi um Tamino de grande qualidade vocal, sempre audível sobre a orquestra e com excelente presença em palco.

O barítono austríaco Markus Werba foi um dos melhores da noite. Fez um  Papageno irrepreensível. Tem uma voz bonita e afinada, não muito grande, mas perfeitamente adaptada à personagem. Em cena foi fantástico, oferecendo-nos uma interpretação enérgica e muito cómica.

O Sarastro foi superiormente interpretado pelo baixo alemão Tobias Kehrer. Voz ponderosa, grave, afinada e de timbre muito agradável.

A soprano sul africana Golda Schultz foi uma Pamina notável. Tem uma voz bonita e um timbre muito agradável. E esteve muito bem em palco.

A Rainha da Noite foi interpretada pela soprano norte americana Kathryn Bowden, uma substituição de última hora. Esteve globalmente muito bem, foi sempre audível sobre a orquestra, embora ocasionalmente tenha roçado a estridência. Foi a mais aplaudida da noite mas, para mim, não foi a melhor de entre este notável conjunto de cantores de primeira água.

Também tiveram grandes interpretações Ashley Emerson (Papagena), Greg Fedderly (um Monostatos engraçadíssimo) e as três Damas, Wendy Bryn Harmer, Sarah Mesko e Tamara Mumford.

THE MAGIC FLUTE / DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, METropolitan Opera, October 2017

The Magic Flute of W Mozart was again on stage at the METropolitan Opera in New York.

Julie Taymor's staging is of great visual impact, though it is not beautiful. It is filled with masonic symbols and there is a great diversity of fantastic creatures throughout the performance along Tamino’s initiatory journey. The three Ladies in the service of the Queen of the Night appear each with a large mask in their hand, which allows a spectacular effect. Papageno is conventionally dressed as a bird catcher. Tamino and Pamina also appear in colorful costumes but the most spectacular are Sarastro, the Queen of the Night and Monostatos. Scenarios change often and the mystic atmosphere keeps on throughout the opera.

Emeritus maestro James Levine directed the excellent Met Orchestra.

North American tenor Charles Castronovo was a Tamino of great vocal quality, always audible over the orchestra and with excellent presence on stage.

Austrian baritone Markus Werba was one of the best of the night. He was a faultless Papageno. he has a beautiful and tuned voice, not very big, but perfectly adapted to the character. On stage he was fantastic, offering an energetic and very comical interpretation.

Sarastro was superiorly interpreted by the German bass Tobias Kehrer. He has a powerful, bass voice, tuned and with a very pleasant timbre.

South African soprano Golda Schultz was a remarkable Pamina. She has a beautiful voice and a very pleasant tone. And she was very convincing on stage.

The Queen of Night was performed by North American soprano Kathryn Bowden, a last-minute replacement. She was globally very well, always audible over the orchestra, although occasionally she has touched stridency. She was the most applauded of the night but for me she was not the best among this remarkable set of top quality singers.

Ashley Emerson (Papagena), Greg Fedderly (a funny Monostatos) and the three ladies, Wendy Bryn Harmer, Sarah Mesko and Tamara Mumford also had great performances.
