Bayerische Staatsoper, Munique - Temporada 2011-2012 / Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich, 2011-2012 Season

(text in English below)

Carlus Padrissa – La Fura dels Baus (tenho sempre algumas reservas...) comta com Jennifer Wilson (Turandot), Marco Berti (Calaf), Ekaterina Scherbachenko (Liu) e Alexander Tsymbalyuk (Timur).

O elenco é muito bom e integra, netre outros, Johan Reuter (Wotan), Wolfgang Koch (Alberich), Ulrich Ress (Mime), Sophie Koch (Fricka) e Eri Nakamura (Woglinde).

A ópera é uma belíssima peça do romantismo russo e o elenco é notável e inclui Ekaterina Scherbachenko (Tatjana), Alisa Kolosova (Olga), Simon Keenlyside (Eugene Onegin) e Pavol Breslik (Lenski).

- I Capuleti e i Montecchi (Bellini) em Maio (12, 16, 19, 23 e 26).

Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich, 2011-2012 Season

The Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich has always very rich, diverse and high quality performances in every season. The next one is no exception. This is also an opera house where, in a “large” weekend, one can often watch three different operas.

I leave here a summary of the 2011 - 2012 season, highlighting what, in my opinion, could be remarkable performances.

The 2011-2012 season in Munich (which is preceded by a tour to Japan) has 36 operas, as well as recitals and performances for children. It begins on 9th October 2010 and ends in late July 2012. As usual, the last month is dedicated to the Munich Opera Festival (Opernfestspiele), where one can see most of the operas presented during the season.

- Carmen (Bizet) in October (9th, 12th, 15th, 18 and 21th), with Vesselina Kasarova, Brandon Jovanovich and Gerald Finley and others. An excellent opera for beginners, set in Spain, with a woman of strong convictions and personality, loved by two men, that ends in tragedy.

- Der Rosenkavalier (Strauss) in October (23th and 29th), November (1st) and July (28th and 31st). One of the best known operas of Strauss, with Martina Serafin in the leading role.

- Tosca (Puccini) in October (30th), November (2nd, 5th and 8th) and July (28th and 31st). Catherine Naglestad and Marco Berti sing in the first performances, Takeshi Kizart Mesh, Massimo Giordano and Bryn Terfel sing in July. A fine cast for one of the best operas of Puccini.

- Les Contes d'Hoffmann (Offenbach), a new production in October (31st), November (4th, 9th, 12th, 17th, 21st, 25th) and July (19th, 23th) with Diana Damrau in a tour de force, singing Olympia / Giulietta / Antonia / Stella, Rolando Villazón (Hoffmann), Angela Brower (Nikolaus) and John Relyea and others. One of the operas of the season that will be unforgettable.

- L'Enfant et les Sortilèges (Ravel) / Der Zwerg (Zemlinsky) in November (6th, 11th, 13th, 18th and 20th).

- Così fan tutte (Mozart) in November (15th and19th) and June (17th and 24th) with Miah Persson, Tara Erraught and Thomas Allen (November) and Maria Bengtsson, Angela Brower and Pietro Spagnoli (June), among others. It's always good to have an opportunity to review one of the best operas of Mozart.

- Fidelio (Beethoven) in November (27th) and December (1st, 4th and 8th). Despite being a poor production (in my opinion), it is one of my favourite operas. With two great singers as the soloists, Anja Kampe and Peter Seiffert, it is always worth remembering the end of the opera, a hymn to freedom and justice, which is one of the most exciting ever written.

- Turandot (Puccini), a new production, can be seen in December (3rd, 7th, 10th, 14th, 17th and 20th), in April (11th, 14th, 18th and 21st), and July (26th and 29th). In production by Carlus Padrissa - La Fura dels Baus (I always have some suspicions ...) it includes Jennifer Wilson (Turandot), Marco Berti (Calaf), Ekaterina Scherbachenko (Liu) and Alexander Tsymbalyuk (Timur). I like this Puccini’s opera, but we have to wait and see what this production will be.

- La Bohème (Puccini) in December (18th, 21th and 26th), and July (17th and 20th), with Maija Kovalevska as Mimi and Wookyung Kim as Rodolfo in December, and Angela Gheorghiu and Joseph Calleja in July. Two great casts for another striking opera by Puccini.

- Hänsel und Gretel (Humperdinck) in December (25th and 26th), as usually for the holiday season.

- Die Zauberflöte - The Magic Flute (Mozart) in December (27th and 29th) and January (1st) also for the holiday season.

- L'Elisir d'Amore (Donizetti) in December (30th) and January (3rd and 7th). A comic opera that shows how a miraculous elixir, sold by the (also) miraculous Doctor Dulcamara can transform Nemorino and his love skills.

- Die Fledermaus (Johann Strauss), as usually, the opera chosen for the last day of the year, December 31st, 2011.

- Der Fliegende Holländer (Wagner) in January (5th, 8th and 11th). A top quality cast, with Alan Held (Holländer), Anja Kampe (Senta), Peter Rose (Daland), Klaus Florian Vogt (Erik) among others. It can not be missed!.

- Die Entführung aus dem Serail - The Abduction from the Seraglio (Mozart) in January (14th, 18th and 21st).

- Don Carlo (Verdi) is one of the highlights of the season. It will be on stage in January (15th, 19th, 22th, 26th and 29th.). The soloists will include René Pape (Philip II), Jonas Kaufmann (Don Carlos), Mariusz Kwiecien (Rodrigo), Eric Halfvarson (The Grand Inquisitor), Anja Harteros (Elisabeth) and Anna Smirnova (Eboli). One of the best operas of Verdi (in which the weaknesses of the plot is entirely supplanted by the superlative quality of the music) is staged with an absolutely outstanding cast. I think better would be impossible. A Must!

- Roberto Devereux (Donizetti) in February (1st, 5th, 9th and 13th). A belcanto opera in which the presence of Edita Gruberova guarantees a memorable interpretation. Roberto Devereux will be the tenor Joseph Calleja, another big name in the current opera scene.

- Das Rheingold, a new production, is the first opera of the Ring that will be seen this season. It will be on stage in February (4th, 8th and 12th) and July (3rd  and 10th). The cast is very good and includes, Johan Reuter (Wotan), Wolfgang Koch (Alberich), Ulrich Ress (Mime), Sophie Koch (Fricka) and Eri Nakamura (Woglinde).
For me, the greatest moment of this season will be the full Ring, directed by Kent Nagano, in a production by Andreas Kriegenburg. A must for those who will be able to get  tickets!

- La Traviata (Verdi) in February (14th, 17th and :26th), and July (27th and 30th). It is always a "classic".. In February the cast is not my favourite choice, with Marina Poplavskaya (Violet), James Valenti (Alfredo), and Leo Nucci (Giorgio, this one a fine singer!). In July, other soloists will sing, but the cast also has, for me, a very weak element - Ramón Vargas (Alfredo). In contrast, the other two soloists, Anja Harteros (Violetta) and Simon Keenlyside (Giorgio) are excellent.

- Madama Butterfly (Puccini) in February (18th, 21th and 25th) and March (1st).

- Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Rossini) in March (4th, 7th, 9th and 13th).

- Die Walküre (Wagner), a new production, will be seen in March (11th, 15th, 18th and 25th) and in July (4th and 11th).
The second opera of the Ring has a fabulous cast that includes Klaus Florian Vogt (Siegmund), Anja Kampe (Sieglinde), Juha Uusitalo (Wotan), Sophie Koch (Fricka) and Katarina Dalayman (Brunhilde). I am sure it will be an unforgettable experience.

- Macbeth (Verdi) will be on stage in March (14th, 17th, 20th and 23th).

- Evgeny Onegin (Tchaikovsky) in  March (21th, 24th and 28th). The opera is a beautiful piece of Russian Romanticism and the cast is remarkable, including Ekaterina Scherbachenko (Tatjana), Alisa Kolosova (Olga), Simon Keenlyside (Eugene Onegin) and Pavol Breslik (Lenski).

- Otello (Verdi) can be seen in March (31st) and April (3rd, 7th and 10th).
Another all-star cast that includes Peter Seiffert (Otello), Juha Uusitalo (Jago), Pavol Breslik (Cassio) and Krassimira Stoyanova (Desdemona).

- Parsifal (Wagner) in April (5th and 8th). A production directed by Kent Nagano and with great Wagnerian singers including Michael Volle as Amfortas, Stephen Milling as Gurnemanz, Christopher Ventris as Parsifal and Waltraud Meier as Kundry.

- Luisa Miller (Verdi) will be seen in April (15th, 20th and 30th) and May (5th).

- Le Nozze di Figaro in May (3rd, 6th, 11th and13th) The cast includes excellent singers such as Simon Keenlyside (Il Conte di Almaviva) and Kate Royal (La Contessa di Almaviva).

- I Capuleti e i Montecchi (Bellini) in May (12th, 16th, 19th, 23th and 26th). Another opera full of arias and duets for the pleasure of belcanto lovers.
I do not like the staging. Conductor Yves Abel will direct the romantic and tragic pair of lovers that will be interpreted this time by mezzo Vesselina Kasarova (Romeo) and soprano Anna Netrebko (Juliette). A must!

- Siegfried (Wagner), another new production, in May (27th and 31st), June (3rd) and July (6th and 13th). The third opera of the Ring will have as soloists Lance Ryan (Siegfried), Wolfgang-Ablinger Sperrhacke (Mime), Juha Uusitalo (Wotan, Der Wanderer) and Catherine Naglestad (Brünnhilde).

- La Cenerentola (Rossini) will be on stage in May (29th) June (2nd, 7th and 10th) and July (9th and 12th). Joyce DiDonato, Lawrence Brownlee and Alessandro Corbelli will be, among others, reasons to guarantee this will be a performance of great quality.

- Wozzeck (Berg) will be staged in June (1st, 6th and 9th) and July (22th).

- Das Schlaue Füchslein (Janacek), a new production, will be seen in June (11th, 13th, 18th, 29th, 21th and 23th).

- Götterdämmerung (Wagner), will be premiered in June (30th) and July (8th and 15th). The last opera of the Ring has an impressive cast, with Stephen Gould (Siegfried), Iain Paterson (Gunther), Hans-Peter König (Hagen), Wolfgang Koch (Alberich), Erika Wueschner (Gutrune), Nina Stemme (Brünnhilde), Michaela Schuster (Waltraute) and Eri Nakamura (Woglinde). A golden finish of the Ring!

- Medea in Corinto (Mayr) in July (1st and 5th), with soprano Nadja Michael as Medea and the tenor Ramón Vargas as Giasone.

- Mitridate, Re di Ponto (Mozart) in July (20th, 23th, 25th, 27th and 30th) will end this impressive Munich’s opera season.

Suggestionss for "operatic" weekends in Munich:
 - Days 4, 5 and 6 November 2010: Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Tosca and L'enfant et les Sortilèges.
- Days 30 and 31 December and 1 January 2012: L'Elisir d'Amore, Die Fledermaus and Die Zauberflöte.
- Days 24, 25 and 26 February 2012: Cosi fan tutte, Madama Butterfly and La Traviata.
- Days 23, 24 and 25March, 2012 - Macbeth, Evgeny Onegin and Die Walküre.
- Days 1, 2 and 3 June 2012: Wozzeck, La Cenerentolla and Siegfried.
- In July 2012, during the Opera Festival, there are several possible combinations.

  2. Excelente Temporada! Bom Mozart, excelente Wagner e Verdi.
