(Review in english below)

Die Walküre - Teatro alla Scala, Milano - January 2, 2011 - The live experience!

Finally, after the misfortunes of May 2010 with Simon Boccanegra and against what at the time I mentioned on this blog of never to return to Milan in order to attend an opera, the Teatro alla Scala opened its doors to me, without restrictions, on January 2.

Inside awaited me the last representation fo "The Valkyrie", enclosed in a new production of the Ring of the Nibelung by Richard Wagner in a co-production with the Staatsoper Berlin. Knowm several months before, the cast of this production suffered an important loss shortly before the release for sale of tickets: the absence of Rene Pape for personal reasons. But when they gather great names in each of the main roles, the abscence of one, albeit important, does not invalidate the overall quality. Names such as Waltraud Meier, Nina Stemme, John Tomlinson and Simon O'Neill delight any Wagnerian when they enter any production, and even more when they are all together on the same one.

My first impression of the Scala was very positive. I was expecting to find an environment somewhat austere and snob, but instead, I found the interior very cozy and the audience seemed genuinely interested in opera, and not particularly or necessarily interested in Fashion ... We can feel its history in every corner of the room.

The beauty of the arrangement of boxes and the architecture is sublime. I regret that, unlike other opera houses such as the Royal Opera House, there are too many seats with poor visibility but still very very expensive. We had the first 2 seats of a side box but with good visibility. However, the two places behind us had so little visibility that the occupiers had to spend almost the entire representation standing up... The orchestra stalls seems too flat and I do not trust that you can see something ahead without heads in front in places other than the front row or in row 13.

Let's leave the Maestro Barenboim enter on the scene and receive a deserved standing ovation:

The staging of Guy Cassiers, despite all the criticism that may have been made, is cohesive and, from my point of view, with only one or another inconsistency that I did not understand. The 1st act shows us the inside of the house of Hunding. A square in the middle sees projected a fireplace and is also from it that Siegmund and Hunding enter on the stage, taking advantage of a game of shadows and lights, which I greatly appreciate in operatic productions. This allowed us to see the fatigue of Siegmund and Hunding's giant shadow appearing in a syncronous way with his leitmotif in the orchestra. On the almost empty central space, the table is suggested by a square of light projected on the floor with the detail of the characters never passing over it. The projection of Wotan’s face in the wall of the house when Siegmund tells his story and talks about his father Walse (which we know is Wotan) is interesting and successful. The tree that keeps Notung on his bed is simple. In a scenario that despite these originality never ceases to be classic, I'm sorry that Cassiers did not find a way of showing a flashing light over Notung when Siegmund asks where the promised sword by his father is.

The 2nd act, in the 1st scene, shows us in the back, a statue of 10 horses that correspond to the ones of the nine Valkyries and Wotan (I believe so). On the left, a globe rotates on its axis, symbolizing the world. In it are some projected images but in most cases, I could not understand what they were. When Wotan says that he has only to await the end, it stops its spin (symbolizing the end of the World and Times) scoring another positive point for Cassiers. The transition to the 2nd scene, leads to the appearance of several white trunks, on which are projected images of a forest, creating a classy environment. The light that is shown when Brunnhilde appears to Siegmund creates an effect of revelation on stage. The entire final scene lives in content, highlighting the wrath of Wotan as reflected in the projection of fire on what were the trees / logs, and the appearance of a bright red vertical line when Siegmund and (later) Hunding die, symbolizing death.

In the 3rd act, on the back, we find the projection of a patchwork of bodies and a horse center, looking forward, symbolyzing the deed of the Valkyries in gathering the heroes to Walhalla. Vertical lines of light are scattered about the scene, impersonating the dead heroes. In my opinion, Cassiers could have put the Valkyries walking on stage and when they touched each of these lines, they would rise up disappearing from the scene. It would be so poetic as a symbolism of rising heroes to Valhalla... I think so. Instead, the whole scene of the Valkyries was sluggish and uninteresting. Finally here, Brunnhilde unfolds her skirt and ends her look of a big mushroom ... I especially liked the two moments of embrace between Wotan and Brunnhilde delivering the ruling after this chastening - a first timid, as if ashamed, and another full of love and almost total forgiveness between them. The option of putting Brunnhilde on a set of solarium lamps, imitating a terrifying fire to all but Siegfried, is original. Although it was and seen that sparkles of water were coming down in order to to cool off a Nina Stemme with bare shoulders and back, I still do not know how she did not get fried on the structure. We will probably see a more tanned Nina Stemme in the next opera Siegfried...

The orchestra did very well, under the direction of Daniel Barenboim. The sound that he can extract from it is truly sublime. However, I still believe (and I felt the same in his Parsifal in Berlin, 2009) that Barenboim sometimes can not find a perfect balance between the naipes in terms of dynamics. The same happens in the orchestra and singers. I think we can not say that singers have little vocal power that does not allow them to overcome the sound of the orchestra. What we can say is that Barenboim pulls excessively to the orchestral sound, and the singers simply do not have a chance. Barenboim sees the orchestra as another character in the opera but it seems that often favors it, perhaps as a reflection of his own ego.

Now the singers, in order of excellency...

Waltraud Meier as Sieglinde was absolutely phenomenal! In excellent vocal form, she lived the character in voice and drama, in a way I have never seen her do on many occasions I saw her on this role. Actually this is a role that she can keep singing with great mastery.

John Tomlinson was also excellent. The role also fits like a glove on his current career path. As we know, he no longer has a high pitch note and when he tried to sing them, they come in a visible effort. As Hunding he lives on his still perfect lower pitch. His looks also live Hunding.

Ekaterina Gubanova was an effective Fricka. Possessing a perfect pitch for the role, she sing her soul in every note and conveys it with simplicity.

Nina Stemmewas also at her highest level but I can not help noting that their initial Hoihotohoos were very tight and the end of the first sequence of them was completely out of tune. But from the Wotan's monologue she was sublime. Excellent stage presence. Each body movement has a purpose. Her voice is strong and lyrical. If we add Nina, Waltraud and Tomlinson, they easily would be able to make a concert version of this opera a memorable show. This is because the voice alone conveys all the emotions experienced by the character - something just allowed to the great singers.

Simon O'Neill is one of my favorite Wagnerian singers. I had heard with satisfaction his Fidelio and (though with less fervor) his Lohengrin, in a recent past. For the first time I watched his Siegmund, a role he studied with the great Placido Domingo (and I have as a modern reference paper). In my view we can divide his Siegmund in two:

The A-Siegmund - soft-spoken, restrained, sung with the mouth in the form of "I", with little legato in an ineffective attempt to convey emotions through gestures, as if his testicles had risen to the abdomen...

and...

A B-Siegmund - stronger voice, mouth-shaped as “a”, beautifull legato and perfect gestures in relation to feelings, clearly with his testicles back to where they belong.

He started as A, rose to B magnificently from the final duet with Sieglinde in the 1st act, especially after the Wintersturmme. In Act 2 he began in B-mode in ordero to fall back to A early in the duet with Brunnhilde, but then returning to B until the end.Simon O'Neill will only be a great Siegmund when he realizes that he must always sing the role in B-mode!

Pape's replacement was Vitalij Kowaljow. For me he was the weakest link in the main cast. He has a decent tone for the role but sings it too metric, unable to use the dynamics to highlight important issues and dilemmas of the character. Where did he put the lyrical legato?... He was perhaps at his best during monologue from Act 2, when other Wotans curiously often fail to do it of special interpretive interest. His gestures on stage were limited to the open arms and the movement of the right arm in the horizontal plane. For sure, he was the weakest link.

The Valkyries as whole were clearly weak. Weak vocal power (and here not a Baremboim’s fault...) and very static in theit main scene of the opera.

Overall, I attended a production and a representation that was not perfect but very good. I think I have become increasingly demanding in Wagner ... When we love, we ultimately want to see everything as we have idealized as perfect. But this is not always possible at 100%.

  1. Gostei imenso de ler este texto. Parabéns, wagner_fanatic. Duas bocas.

"Cogumelo ambulante"!

  6. My wife and I were there a few years ago. There is nothing like Teatro alla Scala in the world. It sparked our interest in opera, and since then, we have been to several great operas in Europe. I hope to learn and enjoy more in the future. Thank you for the memory!

  9. Many thanks to you for the detailed review. I enjoyed reading it a lot.

Nice shots! Especially the picture of the orchestra pit. 5 Harps and full- occupied! Typical Wagner.

Re. Visibility: It’s the same at the Zurich opera house. One time I paid 120€ for "Der Freischütz". But then my seat was so poor situated, that I couldn’t read the subtitle over the curtain. Even if the text is in German, we need some help at the opera. Fortune smiled on me though. I found an unoccupied seat on the front. Last time an old lady in our line couldn’t see nothing because she sat just beside the pillar. I felt very sorry for her. She drove hours from Germany to Zürich to see the opera. Fortunately I found an unoccupied seat for her during the intermission.

You're right. There's no 100% satisfaction at the opera or concert. There's always certain gap between our imagination and reality. The artists are human-being. They just do their best to approach the perfection.

  10. Caro Antonio Machado,

  11. Dear lotus-eater,

I am pleased that you liked the review. I believe it is the best I did so far.

I am always curious about your comments.

Despite everything the seats were fine.

What I did not tell was that the person on the next box, during the first act, kept on supporting his head with his arm and blocking the view. After accepting it (a bit furious on the first act) I had to say something after Fricka ended her line. No problem after. People sometimes have no idea that they are causing some distress to the others, and they do it with no evident harm but...

It is always good to avoid boxes at the Opera houses.

Thank you again for your kind words.

  12. Ha ha... That’s why I avoid boxes as well.

Re. Rene Pape: After his successful debut as Boris Godunov at Met, he wanted to have a break. He is ranked as the best in his field, but he is very cautious with widning his roles. I guess, he needed more time to be prepared for the role as Wotan. He is kind of a perfectionist. At the beginning of April he will made his debut as Wotan at Deutsche Oper Berlin.

I have heard him as Boris Godunov (Pape speaks Russian fluently) at Semperoper Dresden. His voice is 10 times more voluminous than CD. And such a great actor he is. He gave the audience the impression that he's the real Boris Godunov. I’m sure you will get a chance to hear him someday.

  13. I have heard Pape live but as Hunding in a concert version of Die Walkure with Domingo and Meier in 2008 at the Liceu Barcelona. I was really hoping to see his Wotan... I saw him in the Metlive in HD as Boris Godunov and he was superb! I agree with you.
