A BELA ADORMECIDA / The Sleeping Beauty, New York City Ballet, Fevereiro / February 2019

(text in English below)

O bailado A Bela Adormecida, com música de P I Tchaikovsky e coreografia de Peter Martins (Segundo Marius Petipa) e cenografia de David Mitchell esteve em cena no New York City Ballet no início do ano.

Conduziu a Orquestra local o maestro Andrews Sill.

THE SLEEPING BEAUTY, New York City Ballet, February 2019

The ballet The Sleeping Beauty, with P I Tchaikovsky's music and choreography by Peter Martins (after Marius Petipa) and set design by David Mitchell was on stage at the New York City Ballet earlier this year.

The conductor of the local Orchestra was Andrews Sill.

It is a very classic and showy performance, pleasant to watch. The dresses (by Patricia Zipprodt) are lush and very colorful. The placement of the action in the various places where it takes place is made by successive projected paintings, in a well-obtained effect, and the voyage of boat of the prince and the good fairy to the castle, in the fog, is of an unusual beauty.

The dancers (I am not an expert) were globally good. The interventions of the group were beautiful but sometimes the timing of the movements was not perfect. The main soloists were Teresa Reichlen (fairy Lilac), Maria Kowroski (fairy Carabosse), Russell Janzen (Prince Désiré) and Streling Hyltin (Princess Aurora), the protagonist and the best dancer of the night, very correct in movements and conveying a feeling of lightness as if everything were smooth and easy.

A well danced classic ballet is always a nice show.

LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN, Wiener Staatsoper, Setembro / September 2019

(review in English below)

Interpretou a Musa / Nicklausse.

Jaques Offenbach's opera Les Contes D’Hoffmann was on the scene at the Vienna State Opera, in a fantastic production by Andrei Serban.

A surrealist atmosphere has been created. In the first act, the inventor Spalanzani's workshop has several transparent vertical structures, one with a large skeleton with glasses, another with several heads, and in the center is one with the doll Olympia. There are lots of eyes in various places on the stage and several weird machines. The visual effects are magnificent. What I didn't like was Peretyatco's performance as Olympia because she's so much more human in the movements she makes than the doll she represents.
In the second act, Antonia's house is dominated by a huge piano across the depth of the stage, where the tail end is lost. Act 3 creates a star-studded, full-moon night environment of beautiful visual effect, and the gondolas are sophisticated and long, lined with red cushions to match the courtesans. A fabulous production, of great visual impact and very appropriate to the history of opera.

The superior musical direction was by conductor Frédéric Chaslin. The orchestra was very good and the choir fantastic. The soloist singers were all great. Tenor Dmitry Korchak made a correct Hoffmann. He has a very audible voice and a pleasant tone.

Mezzo Gaëlle Arquez was the best of the night. The voice is magnificent in form, emission and expression. She interpreted the Muse / Nicklausse. The experienced baritone Luca Pisaroni has classically and convincingly interpreted the wicked opera characters Lindorf, Coppélius, Miracle and Dapertutto. Tenor Michael Laurenz also made a good impression on the correct interpretation of Andrès, Cochenille, Frantz and Pitichinaccio.

Finally soprano Olga Peretyatko, which I never liked to hear before. But today was different. The voice was always tuned, well projected, very audible and, as Antonia, was emotional. I just didn't like the way she played Olympia at all, because she hardly looked like an automaton.

The rest of the supporting singers were all of a quality suitable for the performance, except Igor Onishchenko who was barely heard as Spalanzani.

MACBETH, METropolitan Opera, Outubro / October 2019

(review in English below)

Loira e quase sempre descalça, surge numa cama, lê a carta do marido e canta magistralmente a primeira ária Vieni, t’affretta!

MACBETH, METropolitan Opera,  October 2019

Verdi's Macbeth opera was once again performed at New York's Metropolitan Opera. Adrian Noble's production transports the action to the post-WWII period in Scotland. It is minimalist but attractive and very effective. Under a forest in the background, the palace is made up of large black movable columns, with only chandeliers, chairs and a large towel. The witches come dressed as tramps.

Directed maestro Marco Armiliato and the Choir and the Orchestra were at top level.

Macbeth was played by baritone Zeljko Lucic after Placido Domingo's dismissal on the day before the premiere following the unspeakable episodes of potential sexual harassment (from decades ago in the case of Domingo) that have peppered several opera artists, transforming the opera world of today as a real Mexican soap opera. Lucic has a beautiful tone, the voice is large but sings somewhat monotonously and was not very emotional, short of the requirement of the character.

Bass Ildar Abdrazakov was a very good Banquo. Has a good stage presence and a very nice and tuned voice. Because he dies early, he doesn't sing much.

Tenor Matthew Polenzani was a quality Macduff. This time the voice did not seem as nasal to me as on other occasions and the singer projected it with great effectiveness, always audible over the orchestra. He sang in tune and had a correct scenic performance.

I leave to the end the true protagonist of the opera, Lady Macbeth, played here by Anna Netrebko. She was colossal! Blonde and almost always barefoot, she appears in bed, reads her husband's letter and masterfully sings the first aria Vieni t'affretta! From then on she dominates the whole performance. Overflows sensuality, wickedness and dominance. The singing completely fills the huge auditorium and is of unparalleled beauty, adorned with stratospheric notes in perfect pitch. The famous sleepwalking scene Una macchia è qui tuttora culminates a superlative performance!

It is a privilege to be able to see and hear Anna Netrebko, who will make history as one of the greatest opera singers of the century.
