(text in English below)
http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/
Metropolitan Opera, New York, 2011-2012 season
The Met's 2011-2012 new season (September to May) is one of the best among the great opera houses worldwide. All the details are available at:
http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/
The Met has 26 productions, seven of them new.
At the end of the season there will be three complete Wagner’s Nibelung Ring cycles, staged by Robert Lepage (a new production of the Met). The first on April 7th, 13th, 21th and 24th, the second on April 26th, 28th and 30th and May 2nd, and the third on May 5th, 7th, 9th and 12th.
As the Met is one of the few world theatres where there are often on scene four or five different operas simultaneously, I will mention the operas on stage in alphabetical order. I highlight in red those that, considering the singers, the musical pieces and my personal preference, I think they can be outstanding performances:
- Aida by G. Verdi, in February (9th, 13th, 16th, 20th, 23th and 28th) and March (3rd). With soloists Violetta Urmana, Stephanie Blythe and Marcelo Alvarez among others. A great production of the Met (in music, staging, choirs and soloists), set in ancient Egypt .
- Anna Bolena by G. Donizetti (September 26yh and 30th), October (3rd, 6th, 10th, 15th, 18th, 21th, 24th and 28th) and February (1st and 4th). A new production that will open the season with Anna Netrebko, Ekaterina Gubanova and Ildar Abdrazakov (three great Russian singers in the Italian repertoire) among others. An opera for belcanto lovers.

- La Fille du Régiment by G. Donizetti in December (12th, 15th, 19th, 24th and 29th) and January (2nd and 6th). A production by Laurent Pelly that has been reviewed twice in this blog. - La Traviata by Verdi, in April (6th, 10th, 14th, 18th, 21th, 25th and 28th) and May (2nd). One of my favourite Verdi operas, this production of Willy Decker will have as soloists Natalie Dessay, Matthew Polenzani and Dmitri Hvorostovsky.

- L'Elisir d'Amore by G. Donizetti in March (5th, 9th, 12th, 16th, 24th, 27th and 31st) will have a superlative cast including Diana Damrau, Juan Diego Flórez, Mariusz Kwiecien and Alessandro Corbelli. Even for those who do not consider this one of the most important operas of the composer, a cast like this makes the opera one of the best of the season.
- Macbeth by G. Verdi, in March (15th, 20th, 24th and 29th) and April (2nd, 5th and 9th). A remarkable opera of the composer with interpretations of Nadja Michael, Dimitri Pittas and Thomas Hampson /George Granidze among others.

The most tragic of Puccini heroines is sang by two great experts in the role of Cio Cio San, Liping Zhang and Patricia Racette.
- Manon by J. Massenet, in March (26th and 31th) and April (3rd, 7th, 11th, 14th, 17th, 20th and 23th). Another new production, by Laurent Pelly, that I had the chance to see in London last season and which is fantastic! The conductor is Fabio Luigi and soloists will be Piotr Beczala and, especially, Anna Netrebko. If she will repeat what she did in London , we can expect an overwhelming interpretation! It was the best performance I saw of Anna Netrebko, who I am an admirer. As someone wrote in this blog, Anna Netrebko is Massenet's Manon. An absolute “must”!.
Live at the Met in HD at the Gulbenkian on April 7th at 17:00.
- Nabucco by G. Verdi in September (27th) October (1st, 5th, 8th, 12th, 15th and 20th) and November (2nd, 5th, 9th, 12th and 17th). - Rodelinda by G.F. Handel in November (14th, 19th, 23th, 26th and 30th) and December (3rd, 7th and 10th). A baroque opera with excellent singers, including Renée Fleming, Stephanie Blythe and Andreas Scholl.

- Tosca by G. Puccini, in January (10th, 14th, 18th, 21st, 24th and 28th). One of the best operas of the composer, the production is by Luc Bondy, and features performances by Patricia Racette, Roberto Alagna / Aleksanders Antonenko and George Gagnidze / James Morris.
I remind that throughout the season, for those who want and can spend an extended weekend (from Thursday to Sunday) in
