A produção é do alemão Andreas Kriegenburg.

Estive sentado a escassos metros dele.

Fabuloso.

A Brünnhilde do soprano sueco Katarina Dalayman surpreendeu-me pela positiva.

Die Walküre by R. Wagner has been one of the most commented operas here in the blog, perhaps because it is a favorite of at least two of the authors.

This time it was my privilege to attend the brand new production of the Bayerische Staatsoper, which will culminate in a complete Ring in July, for which I ordered tickets over a year in advance, but unfortunately I could not get them.

The staging is by German director Andreas Kriegenburg. I really liked it, there are many points of interest, but there are also some controversial aspects. During the overture we see Siegmund fighting in the woods.

At the beginning of the first act the ceiling comes down, and in the center there is huge tree with the sword Notung in it, and several corpses hanging. Below is the house of Hunding and Sieglinde. At the beginning, Sieglinde gives Siegmund water to drink with the aid of some girls carrying the glass between the two, which are at opposite sites of the stage. They approach each other smoothly and, after a casual touch of hands, they feel immediate attraction for each other.

A big table plenty of food is placed in the middle of the stage. Hunding arrives and, threatening Siegmund, cuts a watermelon in half with his sword and squeezes the red contents ahead of Siegmnud, threatening him. The attraction between the twins develops progressively in a very successful scenic effect and culminates, after the removal of the sword from the tree, with a love scene. The acting of the two singers is excellent.

In the second act, the mountain is replaced by a large room (in Walhalla) with only a desk in the back, the spear of Wotan hanging on the wall and a big picture on it.

Fricka appears impeccably dressed, served by a large group of employees and is ruthless with Wotan, forcing him to order Brünnhilde, his favorite daughter, to help Hunding to kill Siegmund. Very upset and in suffering, Wotan gives this order to his daughter, who is in shock.

Brünnhilde finds Sieglinde and Siegmund, and warns him of his near death by Hunding but, when she faces love for the first time, she decides to protect Seigmund and Sieglinde and disobey his father. Siegmund fights with Hunding, but can not kill him because Wotan appears and, with the spear, breaks the sword Notung. Siegmund is killed by Hunding. Hunding, by the influence of Wotan, cuts his own throat and dies too.

The beginning of the third act was the source of much controversy. The curtain opens and the dead heroes are lifted in single piles, all over the stage. Following this there is a choreography of the Valkyries, in short costumes and long hair constantly moving forward and back of the head, taping the floor and with occasional sighs. The pace is frenetic, there is no music and the effect is disgusting. The audience shout loud booing and other expressions of displeasure, some shouting they want to hear music! The scene lasts 10 minutes, an eternity!

Finally, the maestro begins the ride of the Valkyries and the dancers are replaced by the singers, and the performance reaches another dimension. Each Valkyrie has the reins of his horse and often beat them on the floor, causing a noise that disturbs the hearing of music. This is the unfortunate part of the staging.

Than we hear the dialogue between Brünnhilde and her father, one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. Again Wotan is behaving too "human" for the role of an unforgiving God.

At the end, the sacred fire that isolates Brünnhilde is achieved in an original way, with dancers lined on in a circle and the fire lighting up outside, boosted by film images covering the entire stage, originating a beautiful effect.

The musical direction of American conductor Kent Nagano, the main maestro of the Bayerische Staatsoper, was superlative. I was sitting a few feet from him. With an orchestra of exceptional quality, the sound heard is of exceptional quality, and the direction was firm, beautiful to see, and silent.

Kalus Florian Vogt, German tenor, was fabulous as Siegmund. I have already mentioned several times this singer here in the blog. He has a very clearsweet tone, almost angelical. The vocal beauty is extraordinary and he can always be heard over the orchestra, never losing any vocal quality. Their claas for Wälse were fabulous, but the whole performance was excellent. I now realized why the knowledgeable German public has such an admiration about this singer.

The Sieglinde of German soprano Anja Kampe, was overwhelming. The singer has a very powerful and beautiful voice, with a fantastic projection. Artistically her performance was outstanding, she could be "just" an actress and not a singer. She was the best female presence on stage and the audience also recognized that.

The Estonian bass Ain Anger was a perfect Hunding. He was authoritative, with strong, great vocal power, a good figure and flawless interpretation.

Sophie Koch, French mezzo, was a remarkable Fricka. Her voice is very beautiful, strong and secure. The singer is beautiful and elegant, which also helps. Artistically she was blameless. She was hurt and ruthless with Wot

Thomas Mayer, German baritone, was an overwhelming Wotan. I think he played a too humanized god, as remorse and fatherly love for his daughter Brünnhilde were always present, but this option was the director’s. He was great on stage, aided by his good figure. The voice is of an unsurpassed beauty. In the 2nd act he was prudent but in the 3rd he showed all his vocal splendor. Fabulous.

Swedish soprano Katarina Dalayman surprised me positively as Brünnhilde. I had heard her beforeit and I was not very impressed. However, here, she had a high quality performance. The voice is powerful though, in the higher register, she has an occasional tendency to stridency. But she sang the role with great dignity and security.

At the beginning of Act 3, the Valkyries had voices of great quality. It was regrettably the option of the director, who disturbed the hearing.

An unforgettable Valkyrie that, despite the monumental booing at the beginning of act 3, was praised deliriously by the public at the end . Musically it was a wonder, and we heard Wagner in his full splendour!

A encenação parece-me muito interessante.

    @ wagner_fanatic,
Agradeço-lhe, publicamente, ter-me ajudado a compreender a genialidade de Wagner.
