(in english below)

Great Mass in C minor, Mozart. Gulbenkian Foundation, December 2012
In the past weekend occurred the Christmas Concert of the Gulbenkian Foundation, where two pieces by JS Bach (Prelude and Fugue in A minor BWV 543 and Gloria in excelsis Deo BWV 191) and the Great Mass in C minor K 427 of Mozart were played.
From the works played, the Great Mass is, for me, the most striking and one of the (many) works of genius of Mozart. We heard a good concert, although unbalanced.
The Gulbenkian Orchestra, directed by maestro Michel Corboz had a good performance. Truly sensational was, once again, the Gulbenkian Choir. Maestro Jorge Matta is doing an exceptional job.

The soloists were the weakest link. Soprano Sylvia Schwartz was theonly one that impressed me positively. She has a beautiful and secure voice, and offered us an interpretation of quality. Soprano Sonia Grané has not a beautiful timbre, especially in the middle register, and she was often strident in the top notes. Tenor Luís Gomes was heard with difficulty and the voice did not impress. Baritone Job Arantes Tomé had a small intervention but failed to project the voice effectively. A pity, because the Mass deserves better. But it is always a privilege and a unique moment to hear this masterpiece by Mozart, especially when sung by Gulbenkian Choir.
