Così fan tutte – Royal Opera House – 2 e 13 de Fevereiro 2012

(review in english below)

Così fan tutte - Royal Opera House - February 2 and 13, 2012
The Jonathan Miller production of Così fan tutte is already a classic of recent seasons of the Royal Opera House. Miller's work is of excellent quality, bringing every detail for easy understanding of the work and, in several original choices, remains faithful to Mozart and Da Ponte. The action takes place in a room of Dorabella and Fiordiligi house, who appear to work in the fashion world (image below).

Ferrando and Guglielmo simulate a trip to the battlefield as UN peacekeepers, returning disguised as punk rockers through. Then, from here the action takes its way. The game is accompanied by a report from CNN camera man; in the scene of farewell, Dorabella jumps to Ferrando's lap while Fiodiligi does not do the same with Guglielmo leaving him stunned, making the classic sign of the "call me" with the hand mimicking a telephone; the sisters come in black after they're gone like mourning the separation; Dorabella in her aria “Ah, scostati!” tries to open a bottle of aspirins, child proof, and she can not, and Despina opens it easily, helping her; Dorabella drinks a Starbucks coffee leaving the foam on her lips and nose causing a humorous moment of great simplicity; the sisters return dressed as rockers for the wedding scene,; Despina appears as a doctor dressed in gown and gloves with blood, using a defibrillator with the help of two nurses to awake the youth from his poisoning arsenic (here a few M&M’s eaten with pleasure ) - keeping some truth in the recall of Mesmerism; the harpsichord plays the Nokia tune for the mobile phone of Don Alfonso; the marriage contract is signed in a portable computer; in the duet "Il core vi dono," Guglielmo takes pictures with an iPhone kissing Dorabella’s breast, which then serves to show proof to Ferrando of her betrayal... And many others notes that described here cannot show you the live effect.
The difference between these two nights was only in the conductor. David Syrius choosed a faster pace than Colin Davis, especially in the ouverture, something that pleased me even more because I felt that the orchestra was more identified more with Syrius, playing more fluently. I must say that Davis, instead of grunting while conducting, as some conductors do, he sings and sings in tune and in time.
Thomas Allen lives the character of Don Alfonso in such an experienced and natural comic way that leaves us wanting to hear and see and continue to hear and see him. A historical icon that continues to honor the genius of Mozart. He was excellent in both nights.

Malin Byström was fantastic, very expressive and a bit against the idea that I had of her (very serious and cold in giving us her emotions). The beauty of timbre and vocal power offered a balanced and passionate Fiordiligi. Her "Per pieta" was awesome!

Michèle Losier was better in the February 13th, looser on stage and vocally cooler. A very good Dorabella and, like the others, with a voice of great beauty.

Charles Castronovo was the biggest revelation to me. I heard this singer for the first time and what a voice! Spectacular! One of the greatest tenors of our time, able to transform all that he sings in excellence. The aria "un'aura amorosa" was fine, but in "Tradito…" and duets with Fiordiligi in "Fra gli amplessi..." was just brutal!

Nicolai Borchev is a great actor, has a pleasant voice, but was perhaps the one who least pleased me. Much in part by his interpretive skills in the duet “Il core vi dono” - was too facetious, decreasing the depth of the melodic beauty of this duet, and its erotic sense implied. It is a time prior to the consummation of the first treason and must be passionate, felt, and transmiting a true emotion. Not everything has to be humorous, or should, in the Così.

Rosemary Joshua was, as Michèle Losier, better in the February 13th, giving a better necessary vocal inflection of the character making it more believable and enjoyable. She was also more convincing in the scene that embodies the doctor, a scene that, by itself, seemed the least consistent of the production - is unlikely to have a defibrillator, two nurses, a gown and gloves with blood at home...

Even with the Così fan tutte production of the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos very present in my spirit, in general, I enjoyed this production too and a lot, though I cannot say it was better on all levels. I liked the pair Fiodiligi-Ferrando in London more than in Lisbon but the vocal magic, interpretation and complicity of João Merino and Luisa Francesconi was much bigger than that of Borchev and Losier.

  3. Nice shots! I've got a new camera, but still don't know how to choose the right ISO. Last time I set 400, but the pictures were not so clear. What ISO do you set?

Tomorrow on March 24, at 7 pm, you can watch "Eugene Onegin" live from the Bavarian state opera ( www.staatsoper.de)

  5. Hello lotus-eater,

I have that Sony camera I once told you and my knowledge of photography is not very good. I usually use the pre-defined options the camera has. If there is good light on stage, I use the option with the "green camera" option. If there is low light on the stage, or if the singers come and the red curtain in down, I use the "easy" option (but if the red curtain is down I recommend to only try for a video because the photos end up to be horrible, even with other camera options).

FanaticoUm is in Munich and he will see the Eugene Onegin live! I will try to see it on the Bavarian State Opera site, as you told me. Thank you.

  6. Poor FanaticoUm! In this Eugene Onegin all male characters are homosexual! It's just illogical and contradictory. They killed the beautiful music of Tschaikowski!!!

  8. Caro Wagner_fanatic,
