PAIXÃO SEGUNDO SÃO JOÃO, Fundação Gulbenkian, Abril 2022

É habitual a Fundação Gulbenkian oferecer-nos um concerto alusivo à época pascal. Este ano foi a Paixão Segundo São João de Bach, interpretada pela Orquestra e Coro Gulbenkian, sob a direcção do maestro Florian Helgath.

Foi um concerto muito bom, com um óptimo desempenho da Orquestra e do Coro Gulbenkian.

Nos solistas, o tenor Tuomas Katajala (Evangelista) foi excelente. Também ao mais alto nível estiveram o barítono André Baleiro (Jesus) e a soprano Ana Quintans. Muito boas interpretações do tenor Marco Alves dos Santos e do barítono Hugo Oliveira. A mezzo Maria Helgath foi o elo mais fraco da noite, com uma voz pequena que mal se ouvia quando cantava com a orquestra a tocar.

ST JOHN PASSION, Gulbenkian Foundation, April 2022

It is customary for the Gulbenkian Foundation to offer us a concert alluding to the Easter season. This year it was Bach's St John Passion, performed by the Gulbenkian Orchestra and Choir, under the direction of conductor Florian Helgath.

It was a very good concert, with a great performance by the Orchestra and the choir.

In the soloists, tenor Tuomas Katajala (Evangelist) was excellent. Also at the highest level were baritone André Baleiro (Jesus), soprano Ana Quintans. Very good performances by tenor Marco Alves dos Santos and baritone Hugo Oliveira. Mezzo Maria Helgath was the weakest link of the night, with a small voice that was barely heard when singing with the orchestra playing.

SOLOMON de GF Händel, Fundação Gulbenkian, Março/March de 2014

 A oratória Solomon HWV 67 de G.F. Händel foi recentemente apresentada na Fundação Gulbenkian. Paul McCreesh dirigiu a Orquestra e o Coro Gulbenkian. Foram solistas o contratenor inglês Iestyn Davies como Salomão, o soprano português Inês Simões como Rainha de Salomão, o barítono português Hugo Oliveira como um levita, o tenor escocês Thomas Walker como Zadok, o soprano inglês Mhairi Lawson como 1ª prostituta, o mezzo português Cátia Moreso como 2ª prostituta e o soprano escocês Gillian Webster como Rainha de Sabá.

A obra é de grande intensidade melódica e invulgar beleza. A interpretação foi em crescendo, com o primeiro acto razoável, o segundo bom e o terceiro excelente.

Os solistas tiveram interpretações de qualidade variável, merecendo destaque o contratenor Iestyn Davies, o soprano Mhairi Lawson e, sobretudo, o soprano Gillian Webster.

No 3º acto, coro, orquestra e solistas estiveram ao mais alto nível, merecendo relevo o excelente “diálogo” entre o oboé de Pedro Ribeiro e a Rainha de Sabá (Gillian Webster).

The Oratory Solomon HWV 67 by GF Handel was recently presented at the Gulbenkian Foundation. Paul McCreesh directed the Gulbenkian Choir and Orchestra. The soloists were English countertenor Iestyn Davies as Solomon, Portuguese soprano Ines Simoes as Queen of Solomon, the Portuguese baritone Hugo Oliveira as a levite, Scottish tenor Thomas Walker as Zadok, English soprano Mhairi Lawson as the 1st prostitute, Portuguese mezzo Cátia Moreso as 2nd prostitute and scottish soprano Gillian Webster as the Queen of Saba.

The piece is of an unusual intensity  and great melodic beauty. The interpretation has been in crescendo, with a reasonable first act, a good second act, and an excellent third act.

The soloists were of variable quality, deserving a special reference countertenor Iestyn Davies, soprano Mhairi Lawson and, especially,  soprano Gillian Webster .

During the 3rd act, chorus, orchestra and soloists were at the highest level, and I highlight the excellent "dialogue" between the oboe played by Pedro Ribeiro and the Queen of Sabá (Gillian Webster)
