(review in english below)

Simon Boccanegra at the Royal Opera House, London, 2010 - a year later and over a DVD...

One year ago,on this precise day, I was in London to see, after watching the premiere on June 29, a second performance of Simon Boccanegra with Placido Domingo. I am writing this on the blog today because this performace was then recorded in DVD for EMI becoming fastly available and possibly some readers o this blog had already the opportunity to visualize.

I waited until a few days to see the recording. I tell you it was the first time I was truly thrilled to see an opera on DVD. Several were my comments on these production (link) and had been personally found the opening night a better performance but without the immediate comparison with another night, the differences were blurred and this DVD production brings us a great moment of Opera. My opinion about the singers remains as I wrote earlier but I have to emphasize, once again, Placido Domingo. From the amphitheater, many or almost all the expressions are lost and this DVD brought them up close, revealing the great actor Domingo is and how youthful and fresh his voice is, well suited to everything he sings nowadays.

On October 28th it makes 40 years of his debut at the Royal Opera House and on the 27th and 30th this occasion is celebrated in concert with excerpts from operas - Rigoletto (1st time on stage), Simon Boccanegra and Otello. God willing, the Fanatics will be there ...

  5. I seldom listen to CD or DVD. But there're some recordings I'd like to see and listen. One of them is Simon Boccanegra with Domingo.

As I answer to your comment on my blog, Stephane Degout's going to sing as Wolfram at the Bastille coming Oct. I'm so curious how he sing this role. His linguistic art in French is exceptional. But in German? Already looking forward to your review about Tannhäuser Bastille.
