LES HUGUENOTS – La Monnaie, Bruxelas, Junho 2011

(review in English below)

Les Huguenots is an opera by Giacomo Meyerbeer with libretto by Eugène Scribe and Emile Deschamps.

It is a historical picture of religious fanaticism in France in 1572 when, on the night of St. Bartholomew (August 24), about 3,000 protestants (Huguenots) were killed in Paris by catholics. In this context is the story of the tragic love between the protestant Raoul and the catholic Valentine.

King Charles IX wants an end to religious wars in France. The Count of Nevers, a catholic, gives a party where Raoul, a protestant, is invited and welcomed. He says that he fell in love with a beautiful woman who he saved from the hands of a group of troublesome students. Marcel, a follower of Raoul, sings a Huguenot song and refuses to join the party. A woman (the one saved by Raoul) arrives and breaks the engagement to Nevers. There comes a page, Urbain, with a letter to Raoul. All (except Raoul) recognize the arms of Queen Marguerite de Valois. The Queen wants Valentine to marry Raoul, bringing peace between catholics and protestants, but she says that her father, the Comte de Saint-Bris, opposes. Raoul, recognizes her as the former fiancee of Nevers, and refuses her, insulting the catholics. Nevers marries Valentine. Marcel tells Saint-Bris that Raoul wants a duel. Saint-Bris plans an ambush. Valentine, hidden by a veil, warns Marcel. The Queen demands to know what is happening and when Valentine lifts the veil, everyone is surprised. Saint-Bris informs Raoul that her daughter is already married to Nevers. Valentine laments her fate, but Raoul appears and confesses his love. Raoul listens to the plans of Saint-Bris to kill the protestants and warns them, refusing to run away with Valentine. Nevers is killed. The huguenots are with the Queen when Raoul informs them of the massacre. Valentine appears and promises protection to Raoul if he converts to catholicism, but he refuses. So she agrees to become protestant and they are married by Marcel. Catholics murder protestants. Saint-Bris, seeing a woman with two men wounded, asks their identity and verifies that his own daughter was shot to death. The Queen tries to stop the killing but the bloodshed continues until morning.

The staging by Olivier Py was fantastic. The action occurred in a timeless period. The costumes of the main characters were both old fashioned and modern, the homes represented in metal buildings were more modern and massacres were made with machine guns. The stage had a very interesting and innovative mobility, the scene changes were frequent and well done.
Right in the opening a dancer appears holding a large cross, which quickly is separated into two, one in each hand, effectively portraying the theme of the opera. The crosses will be used with great visual impact throughout the performance, either symbolizing the cross of Christ, or swords, as they were handled by the singers.

Although very efficient, the staging is not devoid of some oddities. In the first act, the orgy of men in the castle of the Count of Nevers leads them to almost completely undress, and perform homosexual scenes, irrelevant and outside the context of this opera. The 2nd act opens with a choreography of a nude couple, him with huge horns, which also adds nothing to the work. And the nude scenes continue, especially when the girls go bathing in the river, but here it is according to the plot. In the last act the Queen appears all covered with blood, as if she had participated in the massacre. All are small details that can be easily surpassed by the excellent quality of the staging.

The musical direction was by Marc Minkowski. I was placed in a privileged position and it was a pleasure to appreciate the skill with which he directed the work. The Orchestra and Chorus of La Monnaie were exceptional.
I mention the choruses in particular because they are paramount in this opera, often on the stage and playing students, soldiers, religious and common people.

Meyerbeer's music is exciting, creates different atmospheres throughout the work and has great dramatic force.

American tenor John Osborn was Raoul. He did not have a good start but after warming the voice he was always well in the role (and what a role!). The timbre of his voice is pleasant, light, well heard, the top notes sometimes are sung in effort, but he never fails. The role is very demanding and he is almost always on stage. Artistically he was well, but her colleagues were better.

Queen Marguerite de Valois was interpreted by Danish soprano Henriette Bonde-Hansen. She had an outstanding performance. The voice is beautiful, round, powerful, lyrical and very able to convey all the emotions experienced by the character. Good figure, the singer was also blameless artistically.

Swedish soprano Ingela Brimberg was Valentine. She had a strong presence. The dramatic soprano voice was strong and the singer used it more in power than in melody. A lyrical interpretation would have been more appropriate. But the impact was great and she showed versatility in conveying the different feelings of the character. She was another singer with an excellent figure, which helped her artistry.

Urbain was the French mezzo-soprano Blandine Staskiewicz. Although a relatively small role, she was responsible for another superior interpretation, both vocal and artistic. The voice, beautiful, was particularly rich and strong in the lower register and, whenever she was on stage, she could be heard over the orchestra and over the chorus.

The Count of Nevers was the Canadian baritone Jean-François Lapointe. He was well but he was perhaps the least strong among the soloists. He has a good figure, he acted well, but the voice was less versatile and had not the strength nor the harmony of the singers.

French baritone Philippe Rouillon was an authoritarian Count de Saint-Bris, with a strong, expressive and versatile voice.

Marcel was the French bass François Lis. Among all the principal singers he was the most irregular, with periods of well-modulated audible voice, alternating with others that led the orchestra drown him.

Unexpectedly, I attended one of the best performances of the season, which was a real surprise, in a theater where I have lived unpleasant experiences in the past.

  1. Wonderful pictures!
I've read everywhere that this production is sensational. I'm looking forward to seeing the same production in Strassburg in next season!

  3. @ lotus-eater,
Yes, it is a sensational production. I am sure you will like it very much. I did.

    @ Eduardo Vieira,

  4. Haven't you heard of that? The director Olivier Py is a homoxesual man who brings quite often the scene of the homoeroticism on stage. It doesn't matter for him, if the scene has something to do with the text or not. He seems to have an urge to sing loudly about his sexuality. That's the main issue. Those who like Py just get on the nerves! I'm heterosexual and don't sing about it all the time. Why some people can not keep their sexuality for themselves?

  5. Caro FanaticoUm

    Cumprimentos musicais.

  8. @ lotus.eater and Eduardo,
I did not know what you mentioned about Py btu I looked for it in the internet and you are right. But, even with those unadjusted punctual options, it was a sensational staging.

    @ Alberto,
