WAR REQUIEM, English National Opera, Novembro / November 2018

A comemoração do centenário do armistício a English National Opera apresentou o War Requiem de Britten numa versão encenada de Daniel Kramer.

No palco vão aparecendo, nos lados e ao fundo, fotografias (de Wolfgang Tillmans)  alusivas à 1ª Guerra mundial e a muitas outras situações de grande violência ocorridas nas últimas décadas, desde o massacre de Srebrenica até cargas policiais em manifestações. Ao centro os elementos dos coros e os solistas. Os elementos do coro rodam pelo palco com ar desesperado ou caem mortos em valas comuns. Os solistas vão surgindo pelo meio deles.  No Sanctus há um funeral com pompa militar e uma mãe e filho em desespero.

O efeito é vistoso mas não sei se a oratória beneficia da encenação.

Musicalmente foi um espectáculo óptimo. O maestro Martyn Brabbins dirigiu superiormente as orquestras. A prestação do Coro da English National Opera e do Finchley Children’s Music Group foram muito boas.

Os solistas ofereceram-nos interpretações assinaláveis. O tenor David Butt Philip tem uma voz de timbre bonito e projectou-a sempre bem. 

O barítono Roderick Williams esteve sempre ao mais alto nível e, no diálogo final Let us sleep now com o tenor, foram ambos fantásticos. 

A soprano Emma Bell foi a cantora de voz mais poderosa, sempre imponente, marcante na Lacrimosa, mas pareceu-me um pouco desconfortável na interpretação, apesar de as suas intervenções serem difíceis.

No cômputo geral, um espectáculo muito bom.

WAR REQUIEM, English National Opera, November 2018

English National Opera presented Britten's War Requiem at the celebration of the centenary of the armistice, in a staged version by Daniel Kramer.

On the stage we see on the sides and in the background photos (by Wolfgang Tillmans) alluding to World War I and many other situations of great violence that have occurred in the last decades, from the massacre of Srebrenica to police charges in demonstrations. In the center the elements of the choirs and the soloists perform. The elements of the chorus roar across the stage with desperate air or fall dead in common graves. The soloists emerge in their middle. In the Sanctus there is a funeral with military pomp and a mother and son in despair.

The effect is showy but I do not know if the oratory benefits from the staging.

Musically it was a great performance. Maestro Martyn Brabbins conducted the orchestras. The performance of the English National Opera Choir and Finchley Children's Music Group were very good.

The soloists offered us remarkable interpretations. Tenor David Butt Philip has a beautiful tone voice and has always projected it well. Baritone Roderick Williams was always at top level and in the final dialogue with the tenor (Let us sleep now) were both fantastic. Soprano Emma Bell was the most powerful voice singer, striking in Lacrimosa, but she seemed a bit uncomfortable in the performance, despite the difficulty of her interventions were.

On the whole, a very good performance.
