A Criação / Die Schöpfung, Haydn, Fundação Gulbenkian, Setembro de 2011

(in English below)

Logo no início, o efeito musical é sublime.

A direcção musical esteve a cargo do maestro letão Ainars Rubikis.

Die Schöpfung is one of the great oratorios of Joseph Haydn.
It begins with a slow orchestral introduction, without melody, representing the description of Chaos, which follows the creation of Light, with the orchestra and chorus in fortissimi. Early on, the musical effect is sublime. The birth of man created in God's image, comes after six days in which there is the description of creation. The work ends with the expression of love between Adam and Eve and the glorification of the Lord. It's a musical reference.

The musical direction was in charge of Latvian conductor Ainars Rubikis. The reading of the program made me expect an exuberant and less conventional direction, but that's not what happened. The young conductor directed the Gulbenkian Orchestra superbly, with vivacity and in a "conventional" way. The harpsichordist Andrea Balász was also an essential element in the performance.

The Gulbenkian Choir had a truly exceptional performance, which greatly contributed to the high quality of the performance.

The soloists were of superior quality
Neal Davies, Welsh bass-baritone, has a firm powerful voice, with very interesting low notes. Both in the arias and recitatives were always great.

German soprano Ruth Ziesak was excellent. The voice is of great melodic beauty and uniform quality in all registers. The aria of Gabriel of the second part and the duet of Adam and Eve in the third part were two of the highest moments of the performance.

English tenor Robert Murray also sang very well, but he was a little inferior when confronted with the two other soloists. In the medium range, sometimes it was difficult to hear him.

It was a great season opening concert of the Gulbenkian Foundation.
