ROMÉO ET JULIETTE – METropolitan OPERA, Nova Iorque, Março de 2011

(review in English below)

ROMEO ET JULIETTE - Metropolitan Opera, New York, March 2011

Roméo et Juliette by Charles Gounod is an opera (with a prologue and five acts) with libretto by Jules Barbier and Michael Carré, based on the homonymous work of William Shakespeare.

The story, set in Verona, is well known. Capulet gives a masquerade ball to present his daughter Juliet. Romeo, a Montaigue, appears with his friend Mercutio, and falls in love with Juliet. Tybalt, her cousin, reveals the identity of Romeo but Capulet avoids a confrontation. At night, Romeo enters the Capulet garden and beneath Juliet's balcony he declares his love to her. Father Laurent marry them in secret, convinced that this is a way to put an end to family conflicts. However, members of two families meet, fight and Tybalt kills Mercutio, which then is killed by Romeo. The Duke of Verona condemns him to exile. After their secret wedding night, Romeo leaves for exile. Juliet is informed by her father that she will marry Count Paris. She seeks help from Father Laurent that gives her a potion that will make her appear dead but wake up the next day. Wearing the wedding dress, when she is about to go to the chapel, she collapses and is presumed dead. Romeo arrives at the Capulets’crypt, and having received no information about the situation, believes that Juliet is dead and poisons himself. Juliet wakes up and exchange words of love with him, planning the future. When she realises Romeo is dying, she stabs herself.

I had the first surprise when I first arrived at the Met. Angela Gheorghiu had cancelled her presence on the day before the first night presentation, the one I attended.
I mentioned before in this blog here and here that I particularly like the voice of Gheorghiu. However, I must re-emphasize the singer’s the total lack of respect for the public, since there are more performances that she cancels than those where she actually sings. The excuse is almost always "illness" (perhaps cancelitis?). In this opera, a ridiculous excuse was atrocious, she alleged that she had been poisoned  (poor fragile and helpless Juliet!). This behaviour of prima donna, if it was a practice of great opera divas in the second half of last century, is totally inappropriate at present times.

Peter Gelb, the Met's general manager, decided to fire her next season, where she would sing the role of Marguerite in a new production of Gounod's Faust that is anticipated to be excellent, considering the singers announced.
Unfortunately her substitute is not at the level of the other soloists, but that is not the subject of this text.

I confess that I applaud the decision of Peter Gelb and I think that if the Royal Opera House would do the same, she (or others) with a similar behaviour may think twice before actually doing it.

Returning to this production, the stageing by Guy Joosten is sober, without charm, and here and there, a little kitsch. For example the solution adopted for the wedding night, at the beginning of the 4th act, which is perhaps the most striking scenic moment, with the couple in bed, descending from the heights. Also the age of the singers, especially of Juliet, has not helped the scene.
It is this image that illustrates the poster alluding to the opera at the Met.

Placido Domingo, who conducted the orchestra, did a regular job. There were staggered entrances of the singers and sometimes also of instrumentalists. Despite my enormous respect for this major figure of the opera, I do not understand why he insists on being a conductor. If he was not Domingo, I think he would never be allowed to conduct the Met orchestra

Roméo was played Polish tenor Piotr Beczala. He has one of the lyrical voices I most appreciate among the singers that perform in present times. He gives himself unreservedly to the roles that he interprets and the result is always of high dignity and credibility. The voice is clean, full bodied and very nice in colour and timbre. In this performance, at the end of the 3rd act, when trying a top note, has cracked. However, he recovered and was brilliant until the end.

I admit that whenever I watch one of these vocal accidents with singers, I can not forget it immediately and fear a repetition, which breaks the concentration, but, I confess, with me it is inevitable.
Gheorghiu was replaced in the role of Juliette by the South Korean lyric soprano Hei-Kyung Hong. I had never heard her live. Her beginning was bad, with notes out of tune and uneven power, but after the 1st act she was always very good. The singer is worthy of praise because she had to assume the role in difficult circumstances, only one day after the other has decided not to sing. The top notes were forced and although without the vocal freshness of before she gave us a dignified performance and she was convincing, especially in duets with Beczala.

In secondary roles American baritone Dwayne Croft, was Capulet, singing with a high quality, American tenor Sean Panikkar, was a regular Tybald, American baritone Lucas Meachem was Mercutio with a beautiful voice but a weak artistic performance and American Bass James Morris was an interesting Father Laurent despite his voice has no longer the strength and depth of before.

In conclusion, a good performance, but without the grandeur or the magic that we always expect to feel.

  3. Many thanks to you for the detailed review.

It was a time when Gheorghiu was much more modest. Since she's made good money, her behaviour got to be impossible. It seems that she cancells her performance not because of the illness, but just because of her mood. If a main member of the opera ensemble cancells the day before the performance, it damages the whole production. She is unbelievably selfish. She neider think of the audience, nor her colleagues who've worked hard for the performance.

Unfortunately I've not heard Piotr Beczala live yet. His CDs sound wonderful, but live should be much better.

Hei-Kyoung Hong is an excellent soprano. I can imagine how hard the situation for her was. She didn't even have an enough time to be well prepared for the role. I'm glad to read that inspite of all she did a good job.

You know that Vesselina Kasarova didn't sing in the premiere of "I capuletti". At the moment she is suffering from the pneumonia. I hope she gets to recover soon and will be able to perform, when you're in Munich.

Please let me know about the costume by Christian Lacroix. I admire his work very much. He is a real artist under the fashion designers.
I personally can not go to Munich, because after my trip to Vienna I've got a bad cold again. I wouldn't travel in April.

  4. Caro FanaticoUm,

    Cumprimentos de Portugal

    @lotus-eater,

Ghearghiu, in present days, is an horrible person and I have to forget her (although I confess it is not easy, but I have to!).

Piotr Beczala is an excellent tenor. Try to see him live and you will be impressed. He is really one of the best among those that sing in present days.

Hei-Kyoung Hong was a heroin having to sing the role only 24 hours after the cancellation of Gheorghiu. Seh was her cover, but that is totally different. Despite some initial problems she did her job with great competence. Thanks to her we had a good performance of the opera.

I know already the bad news about V Kassarova. I arrived today in Munich and I will not see her, as she is replaced. But I like I capuleti so much tnat I am sure I will like the performence (even without Kassarova). Romeo will be wearind a dress by Christian Lacroix? I did not know that.

I had a further lot of luck. I could get tickets for the concert for Japan, to be held next Sunday in the mail cathedral of Munich. And they will play Ein Deutsches Requiem by Brahms, with Christian Gerhaher and Soile Isokoski as the soloists.

In due time, I will write all in the blog.
I wish you get better from your new cold as soon as possible.

    @ wagner_fanatic,

  8. Poisoned? Nonsense. It is a shame. R & J is always one of my favorite performances. I can see how her lack of respect for her fans could put a damper on the evening.
