LOHENGRIN, Royal Opera House, Londres / London, Junho /June 2018

(review in English below)

LOHENGRIN, Royal Opera House, London, June 2018

What happened today at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, is indescribable (!!!) but I'll try to describe: this was decidedly the GREATEST Wagnerian night of my life in Covent Garden and anywhere else so far! And I think I do not fail if I consider it the best opera night of my life! The operatic perfection is rare but it exists and comes out in great detail in our mother house, the ROH!

I must emphasize very strongly the young lady who replaced Opolais - Jennifer Davis - because she is the one that does not yet have status – she is "an angel on earth", the perfect Elsa! All others were above the Wagnerian status they already have!

The musical direction of Andris Nelsons is absolutely brilliant - everything that came out of this pit was brutal - the celestial prelude, the alteration of pace that makes in the areas of greater dramatic importance and to enhance the beauty of the melodic line, for example, in the 2nd act, at the end of the duet of Elsa and Ortrud! But not only ... the end of the 2nd act was overwhelming. And when the orchestra is silent and if there was only the organ, without a single sound from the audience, it was a shiver!!! It is incomparable the dramatic sense that this man has! Surreal! And to think that he left the production of Parsifal in Bayreuth because Thielemann would not let him do things as he wanted...

In the staging is everything there, although temporarily displaced. In its fidelity to the text and conception, color and dynamics, lies its perfection!

Klaus Florian Vogt, the best role he plays is Lohengrin that adapts to his way of singing as a "chorus boy". I really liked him. I had heard him on the role but today, in this perfect global set, he was even more fantastic.

Thomas J. Mayer had an attack of allergic cough during one of the periods he was on stage but every time he sang he was great. Before the 2nd act came someone from ROH to apologize in his name but he was going to continue on stage. And he was perfect! "Excuses" just for having sung and interpreted so well that I almost had a heart attack :)

Christine Goerke was a cynical Ortrud and also with excellent vocal performance.

This is a Lohengrin that will stay in the History of the Royal Opera House and in the History of the Opera forever! And stuck in my memories and in my heart beyond life!
