“Bastava seguir as instruções”.
- Paulo do Valkirio.
- Plácido Zacarias do Ópera Lisboa.
- Blogger do Ópera para Principiantes.
- Alberto Velez Grilo do Outras Escritas.
- Elsa Mendes do Ars Super Omnia.
- lotus-eater do Operasora
November 19th - The First Anniversary of OPERA FANATICS
Today is the first anniversary of The Opera Fanatics blog!
Wagner_fanatic and I, two colleagues in profession and opera lovers, had a habit of discussing the operatic experiments we were living. Sometimes we recalled old performances and we regretted that we did not have a more objective record of memorable moments: a fabulous recital, one (or several) extraordinary performances, a remarkable staging, an unexpected encounter (or searched for at the stage door) with an artist. Then, the idea of a blog came to mind! We could record in a more permanent medium our memories and at the same time these could be read by others.
But how could we go about it? The best would be to humbly accept our ignorance on how to actively engage in the blogosphere and ask for help from friends. Everyone told us it was a breeze! "Just follow the instructions." In fear, we decided to dive in. The beginning of the ”Opera Fanatics” is a mirror of our total inexperience.
We started our reports and, four months later (!), comes the first comment from a stranger! What now? Shall we thank? Or answer? In the end we did not respond to this comment. Until we wrote about an opera in the “São Carlos” opera house, Die Fledermaus (of bad memory). Comments of various kinds suddenly exploded (the term seems exaggerated, but until then we had received only one), these were a revelation for us and the first signal that there were more people than we thought reading the blog.
In July a big improvement takes place - the inclusion of another author - the “FanáticoDois”. From now on, we were three regular contributors!
And still the frequency of comments went from rare to occasional, and later from occasional to frequent. With satisfaction we found that some of those who commented did so repeatedly, which suggested regular reading of the blog, perhaps by interest or curiosity.
Truly impressive for us was the access to statistical information that we began to be provided to us, I do not remember when, but I think in the summer. We were incredulous at the amount and geographic diversity of our visitors. Surprisingly, we saw pages of the blog translated into English,
but also into less expected languages like Polish, Bulgarian,

Hebrew, Greek,

Russian, Chinese,
and Japanese.
We were happy and proud and became a little ambitious. Yes, ambitious because we introduced new features, always pushed by wagner_fanatic - in August the inclusion of videosrecorded at the end of performances (curtain calls) and in September the translation into English of the texts (the "possible" English!). These changes paid off because we got references on YouTube about our videos and the first comments in English appeared in the blog (in October), we assume from those who do not understand Portuguese.
Meanwhile, after a year of existence:
- We wrote about 72 performances we saw and heard.
- We have 27 "registered" followers, (including ourselves).
- We had 23 400 visitors since the beginning of July 2010.
- We found that about 45% of visitors were from foreign countries (mainly from Brazil but also in the "top 10" are Germany, USA, UK, Spain, France, Austria, Switzerland and Italy).
We have followed other blogs written in Portuguese (and not only), also devoted to opera. From the majority of their authors (and from other people) we have received enriching contributions. We mention them again:
- Paulo from the blog Valkirio.
- Placido Zacarias from the blog Opera Lisboa.
- Blogger's from the blog Opera para Principiantes.
- Alberto Velez Grilo from the blog Outras Escritas.
- Elsa Mendes from the blog Ars Super Omnia.
- lotus-eater do Operasora.
- Il Dissoluto Punito from the blog Opera e Demais Interesses (with regret, we never had a comment from Il Dissoluto, but the high quality of his blog is always underlined by us).
- Gus on Earth, demoura, Bartolomeu, Sr. José Mlinsky, and, the newcomers, Ali Hassan Ayache, LG, sonsprinter.
To all, artists, authors from other blogs, commentators and readers, our sincere thank you for the enrichment of our blog with your contributions!
Who would think a year ago, when we started, that “Opera Fanatics” would become what we are now?
