Dirigiu o Coro
Gulbenkian, a Orquestra Gulbenkian
e o Coro Infanto-Juvenil da Universidade
de Lisboa o conceituado maestro Michel
Corboz.

PASSION BWV244, Gulbenkian Foundation, April 2014
As has been (excellent!) habit, the Gulbenkian Foundation offered us the possibility to enjoy a Passion in Easter week. This year was again a masterpiece, the Matthäus Passion BWV244 by Johan Sebastian Bach.
Renowned maestro Michel Corboz directed the Gulbenkian Choir, the Gulbenkian Orchestra and the Chorus of Children and Adolescents of the University of Lisbon.
Soloists were French soprano Sandrine Piau, Spanish countertenor Carlos Mena, French tenor Vincent Lièvre-Picard, German tenor Christoph Genz, Portuguese bass André Baleiro, and English baritone Peter Harvey.
The beginning of the concert, the day I attended, was something troubled with various mismatches among musicians, that could have compromised the quality of the performance. But the competent conductor Corboz quickly controlled the situation and offered us, once again, a great performance.
The performance of either of the soloists of the orchestra as the vocal soloists was not uniform. I will highlight those who, in my opinion, stood out positively.
Excellent soloists from the Orchestra included Pedro Ribeiro and Nelson Alves in Oboes and Marc Ramirez on bass.
Among the vocal soloists, those whoo impressed me most were Sandrine Piau, Carlos Mena, Peter Harvey and, especially, André Baleiro that was an excellent Christ.
