(review in english below)
TRISTAN UND
ISOLDE, Teatro Real , Madrid ,
February 2014
Here is a brief note from wagner_fanatic about R Wagner´s Tristan and Isolde that he saw recently in
The staging was by Peter Sellars. The stage direction was excellent with regard to the content of the text. Projected images by Bill Viola complementary to the stage action, even if we did not look to the singers but knowing what was going on, enabling us to travel to a parallel universe of meaningful of love, although induced by a portion, but beyond what is understandable, if never experienced one like this.
Sellars puts
King Marke kissing Tristan's face twice - the idea showing that King Marke is
more disturbed not by Tristan "steal" his Isolde as a woman, but
because he betrayed the trust and admiration (though unintentionally as we
know) we had for him. This is something that I had not noticed before so
clearly as it is shown in this production
Seven years
after seeing this staging, and several “Tristans” after, I reached the beauty
and emotional power that this opera has. And I guess what Wagner felt by
Mathilde Wesendonk to write this. Only for very few.
The Orchestra of the Teatro Real, directed by maestro Marc Piollet, was brutal in Wagner!
Violeta Urmana´s Isolde was very powerful vocall, but she never screamed.
Robert Dean Smith´s Tristan gave everything he has vocally, and regularly throughout the opera.
Ekaterina Gubanova’s Bargäne was very good, especially in the first act. Sometimes she showed some slight oscillation of relaying in extended notes.
Jukka Rasileinen’s Kurvenal was fine, good pitch, with vocal credibility and excellent expression of loyalty (he felt) with Tristan.
Franz Josef Selig as King Marke was excellent. The timbre (gorgeous), the intonation he gives and thw way he lived the monologues, vocal and artistic, was creepy.
An excellent Tristan and Isolde!
This is the opera that got me interested in your blog. As a literature professor, I was very familiar with Tristan and Isolde. When I saw the opera mentioned on your blog some time ago, it peeked my interest and I have become an opera fan.
