Rigoletto, War Memorial Opera House, San Francisco, September 2012 - Cast 1
Rigoletto is one of the most beloved operas of G. Verdi. It is often staged, and perhaps also why it has been one of the most commented in this blog. Often the Fanatics, in professional trips, find it on. It was the case, once again, inSan Francisco , where I attended two performances, with different casts.
The first performance was with the cast of the most respected singers but in the second, the young soloists made a difference in quality, as I will mention in a further text to be posted within days. The staging of Harry Silverstein is interesting and well done. The scenarios are relatively simple, effective and nice. A classical approach was chosen (I always like it), where the costumes were the more conventional component.

The musical direction was by the Italian maestro Nicola Luisotti. He did a good job, the Orchestra was also correct, despite a couple of missed notes, more evident in the overture. The Choir was blameless.
Rigoletto was played by Serbian baritone Zeljko Lucic. He is a singer with a big and unusual beautyful voice, who sings this role often. But he did not always conveyed the necessary drama. Was was very good in the beginning. After verifying the abduction of his daughter and until the end, though convincing, he could have been more expressive in the feelings of anguish, despair and revenge. In beautiful and dramatic aria Cortigiani vil razza dannata his vocal interpretation could have been more dramatic, as required by the character. With singers of this caliber, one expects perfect interpretations, which did not happen this time. But it was a unique pleasuret to hear him.

Polish soprano Aleksandra Kurzak was a Gilda with a powerful and nice timbre voice. In the famous aria Caro nome she was a little harsh, but she sang every note without hesitation or failures. She kept the high quality interpretation throughout the performance and artistically she was very convincing, the best artist of the night.Francesco Demuro, Italian tenor, was the Duke of Mantua. Immediately before the performance we were informed that he had a cold but, nevertheless, he would sing. It was worth the effort because, despite having a small voice, he managed to take advantage of it and I did not think he felt any particular difficulty. The top notes are sung in a little effort, but this happened whenever I heard him before.
He made a mistake in the opening aria of 2nd act Ella mi fu rapita! but de disguised well and ended up having a high quality interpretation. Despite the cold, he improved along the performance and the last act was the best. La donna è mobile, one of the best-known tenor arias, was very well sung and his best interpretation.
American mezzo Kendall Gladen was a Maddalena with a warm, strong and fabulous voice. She is, herself, a tall woman, which created some scenic difficulties to the tenors (in the two performances), both of shorter stature.
Italian bass Andrea Silvestrelli has an unusual timbre, and his first intervention caused me some discomfort. But I overcame it. The voice is bass and cavernous, and perfectly audible in the lowest register. And his Sparafucile was very interesting, especially in the last act.
Count Monterone was sung by Canadian bass Robert Pomakov. He did a good job in his short but very audible role .
I had a far away and very good start of the new 2012 – 2013 opera season!

I would love to see this production. In fact, my wife and I are considering traveling to SF to see Tosca.
ResponderEliminarTosca is a fantastic opera to see JJ. And you will remember your times in Italy and some history as well! Good choice your wife's.
