(review in English below)
Il Trittico (I of IV) - Royal Opera House, London, September 2011
Il Trittico, by G. Puccini, is a set of three one-act operas, Il Tabarro with libretto by Giuseppe Adami, Suor Angelica with libretto by Giovacchino Forzano, and Gianni Schicchi also with libretto by Giovacchino Forzano, the last one based on an episode of the Divine Comedy (Inferno) by Dante. Puccini wished Il Trittico to be always displayed in full, but this does not happen often. Of the three operas, Gianni Schcchi is enjoying more popularity and is most often presented, and Suor Angelica is considered the least interesting. Totally different, the three address different aspects of death.

Il Tabarro, set in Paris in the early twentieth century, is a verismo opera about jealousy, revenge and death. Michele, the owner of a transport barge on the Seine, suspects that his wife Giorgetta betrays him with one of the stevedores. Luigi is in fact her lover. They arrange to meet, and when her husband tries to embrace her, she repels him. Luigi sees light at the boat, thought to be the signal to meet Giorgetta but faces Michele who kills him and covers him with a cloak (tabarro). When Giorgetta approaches her husband, he shows her lover's body.
Suor Angelica is set in a convent in Italy in the seventeenth century. The cast is exclusively feminin. Sister Angelica lives tormented because she was sent to the convent for having an illegitimate child who she barely saw. She is visited by a princess, her aunt, who reminds her of the shame she brought to the family and asks her to sign away her share of her father’s heritage. Her aunt informs her that her son died two years ago and Angelica collapses. Alone, she drinks a poisonous potion but knowing that suicide is a mortal sin, she prays the Virgin for salvation. The miracle happens, she hears the voices of angels and she sees the Virgin with her child as she dies.

Gianni Schicchi is set in Florence in the thirteenth century. It is the only comic (buffa) opera of the composer. The family of the wealthy Buoso Donati, who has just died, "mourns" his death, when they know he left his fortune to a monastery. They try to change the situation. Rinuccio confirms the will but accepts to try to change the situation if he is allowed to marry Lauretta, daughter of Gianni Schicchi. Gianni Schicchi, despite the opposition of the family, is called to help resolve the problem and, at the insistence of his daughter Lauretta, accepts it, provided that none of the family members will oppose his plan. He pretends to be the dying Donati who dictates a new will to a notary, leaving all his goods the his friend "Gianni Schicchi”.
This opera has also moments of great musical beauty, including Rinuccio’s tenor aria Avete totó!... Firenze è come um albero fiorito and, of course the soprano aria, O mio babbino caro by Lauretta.

The conductor was the Music Director of Royal Opera House Antonio Pappano. He directed superbly the excellent Orchestra of the Royal Opera. This was decisive for the success of the performance. The Choir of the Royal Opera, most noticeably in Suor Angelica, was also excellent.
The staging by Richard Jones was magnificent.

Over the next days I will post my opinion on each of the three operas I attended at the Royal Opera House.
Que venham lá esses comentários, após este aperitivo de um conjunto de obras que não fazem parte, para já, do meu mundo operático. Estou curioso.
ResponderEliminarYou're lucky to see Il Trittico which is is seldom staged. Has Anja Harteros sung in Suor Angelica or cancelled?
