LA FILLE DU RÉGIMENT, Royal Opera House, Julho / July 2019

 (review in English below)

LA FILLE DU RÉGIMENT, Royal Opera House, July 2019

Once again I had the opportunity to see Donizetti's opera La Fille du Régiment in Laurent Pelly's very funny production. It is one of those cases where a second-rate opera becomes an excellent show.

Maestro Evelino Pidò conducted the orchestra and choir of the Royal Opera House.

Marie was played by French soprano Sabine Devieilhe. Shee had an excellent presence on stage, very agile, expressive and comical. The voice is pleasant, tuned but relatively small, which is manifest in a vocally demanding character as is the case. She was brilliant at the beginning of the 2nd act, in the disenchantment during the singing rehearsal with the Marquise, perhaps her best moment.
It is said that she is a worthy successor of Natalie Dessay. I disagree, despite the good perfromance, it is not comparable to Dessay, that yes, was an absolutely exceptional interpreter of Marie, that I had the privilege to see in this production and in this theater more than 10 years, opposite Juan Diego Florez. Dessay has indelibly marked this production and I think it will not be possible to overcome her.

Tonio was tenor Javier Camarena who I had also seen playing this role before. On stage he is a little heavy for the role but in this case yes, we are faced with an absolutely exceptional singer, especially in the top register that seems to be sung without effort, with stratospheric notes always tuned and in a volume that must be heard outside the theater. Fabulous! As I have always seen with him, he gave an encore the aria of the nine high Cs Ah! mes amis ... but for the first time at the Royal Opera I saw a singer receiving a long standing up applause within the first act. A delirious audience completely surrendered to the singer's art!

Albanian mezzo Enkelejda Shkoza was a very inspired Marquise de Berkenfield and, in the 2nd act, was unsurpassed in the comic register. The production helps a lot.

The good Sulpice created by Pietro Spagnoli was another top performer. Great voice, tuned and always well projected. And a very nice, protective and paternalistic stage presence, as demanded by the character.

Donald Maxwell also excelled in the interpretation of Hortensius, the nonconformist butler of the Marquise, unhappy with the military presence in his castle.

The Duchess of Carkentorp is a character who does not sing and is usually attributed to a consecrated actress or to a great singer already retired. This time was played by Miranda Richardson, a British actress unknown to me. I've seen much better in this role.

It was a very fun and enjoyable performance that illustrated well that the opera can also be a cheerful and very comical party.

Even BJ could not resist participating in the choir ☺!

LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, Royal Opera House, Londres, Julho / London, July 2019

(review in English below)

LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, Royal Opera House, London, July 2019

It was the best Marriage of Figaro I have ever seen. The staging of David McVicar is beautiful, showy and effective. John Elliot Gardiner had a superior direction and raised the orchestra to a plateau. Also the respect for the singers was fantastic.

As for the soloists, it was a homogeneous and very high quality group. The ladies were all fabulous, having shone more Joélle Harvey (Susanna) and Julia Kleiter (Countess) because roles lend themselves to this. Mozart reserved for the Countess some of the most beautiful musical pieces he wrote and Kleiter gave them justice in the emotional interpretation she offered us. Even the secondary singers were beyond reproach, Diana Montague (Marcellina) and Yaritza Véliz (Barbarina).

Among men the best was Kangmin Justin Kim (Cherubino) a winning strategy having chosen a (good) countertenor. He was excellent in both singing and agility and scenic performance. Maurizio Muraro was a luxury Bartolo. Simon Keelensyde (Count) was excellent both as an actor and in the corner (and does not look as old as the streaming that ROH did a few days before). Christian Gerhaher (Figaro) is a singer that I admire because he approaches the roles emotionally and intelligently. That's what he did, no big vocal traits, but always there. One last note for the very good Jeremy White (Antonio) and Alasdair Elliott (Curzio).

And a dream audience - no coughing, silent and applauding (much in frequency and intensity) always after the music was over. This way yes,, the opera can be enjoyed in full.
